Welcome 2 The Dawn

Back in the summer of 1993 I was in the middle of a sweaty crowd (getting slightly crushed!) on the pitch at Wembley Stadium, London, England. Prince and The New Power Generation had just ripped through a nearly 2 hour set of songs from the Symbol album and some older "hits" which I had never heard him sing live before (including a cool version of Sometimes It Snows in April with some awesome guitar riffing). Mayte had done the handstand splits and quickly flashed her ermmmmm assets to us. The whole crowd had sung along enthusiastically during 7. I was happy.

The lights went down and Prince started a long monologue, explaining how he wanted to bring music to us (not far removed from where we are today with the NPGMC). Some people around me were getting bored, I was intrigued, waiting for the encore, and wanting to hear the new songs I had read about, especially Endorphinmachine. A drum beat kicked in, Prince talked in time with the beat, the song (Come) built up, the lights came on as he said Welcome 2 The Dawn!

Well to say I had been waiting a long time to hear Prince utter those words would be understatement. I got goosebumps and felt that this was the "dawning of a spiritual revolution" for my favourite artist. May U Live 2 See The Dawn had long been an enigmatic and mysterious phrase on liner notes and at the end of movie credits. Were we now seeing The Dawn?

So what do other org members feel? Do you feel like we have seen The Dawn? Has it lived up to expectations? What do you take as the meaning of The Dawn as Prince sees it? I guess the lyrics of the song Welcome 2 The Dawn sum it up but does it imply more? I'd like to know your thoughts.

In a 1996 Rolling Stone interview (right before 'Emancipation' came out),Prince mentioned a new album that he was working on called 'The Dawn'.He said that "the world isn't ready for this one yet".Apparently, this is a work-in-progress,as I've heard about this big project several other times in the past.Wonder when/if it will ever be released?

I can't help wonder if he changed the name of the album from "The Dawn" to "The Rainbow Children" ? If you have any doubts, listen to it again.

I think that he was just being a little premature when he uttered those words in 93. Back then, I think that he still genuinely believed that he would be able to release songs as 0)+> whilst 'Prince' was still under contract to WB (I'm sure that I heard that from somewhere at the time).
The NPGMC is someway towards 'The Dawn' but, until every Prince fan has Broadband internet access and a CD burner, I think that his true vision of sending music to us directly and instantly will have to wait. I still think that the best way for the NPGMC in the near future would be where you pay $100 a year and get to pick a certain number of songs each month/quarter from a list provided on the site and then download them, or have your choices sent to you on a CD. Maybe the odd full album there, too. Well, I can be hopeful, can't I?

I was there too! And I was soooo excited when he said those words! Obviously Come meant nothing to me at the time, but that didn't matter!

I believe the 'other' version of 'Welcome 2 The Dawn' is a vault item that has not been bootlegged and no-one, apart from Prince, has heard... The track isn't even listed in Turn It Up 0.2

Well, DMSR mentions a track that's supposedly called:

"When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes".

If I recall correctly, it was recorded in late 1988.
