21+ minute 12" version of "America" avail on CD

Not sure if this has been posted before, but Warners France has issued a CD compilation entitled "Minneapolis Funk," which features the 12" extended version of "America."

The entire track listing is:

1. Tevin Campbell, "Round and Round" (Soul Mix Edit) 4:54
2. The Time, "Pandemonium" 4:12
3. Morris Day, "Fishnet" (Big Leg Mix) 7:15
4. Sheila E., "A Love Bizarre" 12:18
5. Brownmark, "Good Feeling" 4:09
6. Prince, "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" 4:04
7. Karyn White, "Love That's Mine" 4:53
8. Michael Jeffries, "Not Thru Being With You" 5:00
9. Prince, "America" 21:46

It's a weird mix of songs. Not sure what the logic was in selecting some of these tracks. But it's still a rarity since to my knowledge it is the first time that 12" extended version of "America" has been made available on commercial CD release.

The cd can be purchased online through French retailer fnac.com for about $30 (with shipping and handling). The site is all in French though (my French skills were just enough to get through setting up an account and making the purchase) so good luck. If you can't navigate through the site, you may be able to get the catalog info and have your local wreckastow order it as an import.

Here's the URL (the site also features audio sample clips):

This CD is has been out since September... It's been dificult for the people responsible here to France to collect some of these songs, due to contractual problems... some other artists had been intended to be featured like Eric Leeds, Mazarati or The Family. The collection sucks, except for the "America" 12 version, Sheila E's "A love Bizarre" and "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker".

It is more stupidity from Warner Brothers concerning Prince's catalog. People in the states would pay big bucks to have the extended versions on a cd.

OK lawyers in the house, copyright/masters question:

Did WB have to get permission from Prince to re-release these recordings? At least five of the nine tracks are from Paisley Park/WB records. We know they still own the masters, but do they need his permission to re-release them?

If not, they really do suck at picking tracks. This is the most random collection I have ever seen. But "America" still does rock.

I'm sure WB could care less about selling a few thousand extra copies to the remaining Prince fans. And how much money exacty do you think people would be willing to pay for it? I hope you don't think folks, other than the idiots who joined NPGMC, would be willing to pay more than the average CD price for this disc...

Nah not hardly, eye'm jawing at npgmc, cause eye cant actually believe its bein runned this way.

But that has NOTHING to do with how eye feel on those two songs, eye actually like the edit version of America, but that 21 minute is to long, and so is I would die for you, but that is no reason why someone else wouldnt.. eye can see how some people really dig these songs, but they are just plain mediocre for me...

It all depends on the contract,
Some contracts mean that the record company can pretty much release what they like, and some contracts are limited to the agreed releases. Just to confuse matters, this can vary from country to country.

I must admit I was surprised that WB could issue this album, as the fact that they have never released anything beyond what had been agreed with Prince indicated that he had the latter form of contract. So either the rules are slightly different in France, or Prince agreed it...or they've gone ahead and released it without his permission.

Im not completely sure but I think iin this case they need his permission to collaborate on the release of remastered recordings.

lol While I don't think it sounds like a commercial, I do think it's about 11 minutes too long. The sucka gets boring and repetitive.

My guess is that they did it without his permission... and maybe it has to do with it being a European release. I remember a while back that his site had something posted about the other "extended" 12" versions on CD (Let's Go Crazy, Erotic City, Kiss, etc.) and it was something like "What should be souled" implying that it was being done, configured, without his permission.

His sense was that the configurations were based on commercial not artistic decisions. Regarding this "Minneapolis Funk" collection I can't even see the commercial reasons behind it. Certainly there is no artistic logic for the selection of tracks.

I'm a little more interested in the twelve minute "Love Bizarre", though I'm one of the few, the proud, the 21-Minute "America" lovers - awesome that it's commercially available on CD (kinda).

I got this CD in the mail today. The version of America is slightly edited, and is *only* 21:31, the original being 21:46. I'm not sure where it is edited, and I'm not planning on listening to both back to back to compare. I think it may have been transferred from the vinyl, as the sound quality is certainly inferior to the version on the ATWIAD CD. Isn't this the 1st time the extended version has been released outside the US?

Also, in the sleevenotes, it says that Miles Davis wrote "Don't Lose Your Mind" from the Tutu album in 1988 as a tribute to Prince.

The artistic logic is the city...Warner released similiar compilations for NY, Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia and maybe a few other cities.
