I'm pretty sure that it was actually 1873. It's a common mistake people make, but I read in DOW that the song was composed in 1873.

Well, it's believed to be a reaction to negative comments concerning TRC during the 2001 celebration. So, maybe in the summer of that year.

I thought the song was a commentary on the Jewish-Palestinian conflict.

It premiered in the NPGMC monthly audio show for September, part of the mix "for these troubled times" that highlighted Prince's spiritual music. That plus the bagel and cream cheese / baklava lyric have many thinking it was to address the mideast crisis.

However, I recall Aerogram giving this really great breakdown of the meaning on alt.music.prince as it could apply to what went down at The Rainbow Children listening sessions summer 2001 when folks didn't seem to appreciate the pearls that Prince was casting.

The title draws from a Biblical phrase that warns against people not appreciating pearls of wisdom.
"That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

it's just one of the many catchy prince songs that he comes up with when he is n tune...
prince would not refer 2 his FAMS as swine
even if they didn't understand his 'pearl'
...AND?
