Has coming to Prince.org changed your opninion of Prince?

Hey all,

I noticed the other day that I look at Prince's actions with much more cinisism since coming to Prince.org.

I still dig his music as much but Prince the man is a very different person to me now.

Take the word 'Fam' for example, when P first started using that word I thought 'thats nice, he thinks of us as family'. Now I hate that word!

So has anyone else experienced this??

God bless

Lewis

You don't have to like a person to like their music, books, movies, paintings, etc. You will miss out on a lot of great things if you only pay attention to works by people that you believe that you would like to be friends with.

I've had much criticism for Prince for many years. This forum just has led me to others who can be as critical sometimes, but still appreciate the music.

Also, I've never been sill enough to think of P fans/fams as a higher form of person who have more open minds, more open hearts, etc than the rest of the world. It takes all kinds, and I knew that applied to P fans/fams as well. This site has only confirmed that thought...

Coming to Prince.org has ruined my youth.

I now have no friends...I forget to eat...I wash less, but on the other hand I sweat less too...and even when I use a gorgeous guyz picture as my own, girls still reject my advances...

Prince U R a bastad.

You are very young. That's why it's hard for you to understand that a couple of dozen people posting on Prince.org DO NOT constitute a "good majority of Prince's fans."

Prince has thousands of fans/fams, many of whom do not post online and have never even heard of Prince.org.

It's incorrect for you to say that a "majority" of his fans hate him when that simply is not the case.

It hasn't changed my opinion of Prince, cuz 95% of my opinions about Prince concerned his music, not him...but it has had an effect on how much I enjoy being a fan...I think I enjoyed being a fan far more before joining P.org than I have afterwards...

Before, I just bought the CDs and by chance caught an occasional article or interview in a magazine or newspaper...that was pretty much my Prince world before, listening to his latest and wondering what his next will be...I didn't expose myself to a continuous flow of gossip and rumors and innuendo or fake reports about upcoming albums and fake tracklists...I didn't bother to scrutinize the man's every move, and nobody else I knew did, either...I wasn't hearing over and over as to why I should be thinking of Prince as a selfish, egotistical, fanatically religious prick...I didn't think of myself as being part of a "cult"...and I damn sure was never accused of being an asskisser...

I just bought the CDs and by chance caught an occasional article or interview in a magazine or newspaper...that's it...and in retrospect, that was enough...

I came to P.org because I wanted to learn about new CDs and concerts and get some inside scoop on upcoming releases...I stayed(and continue to) because I've enjoyed a lot of the discussions I've been in, as well as some good friends I've made while being here...that, along with the occasional news about upcoming CDs and concerts...I still want those...

But being on P.org as much as I have been has diluted the excitement from being a Prince fan...

I did learn more about Prince once I came online and started reading the Prince forums and the newsgroup.

My contact with other Prince fans did not change my opinion of Prince. My feelings about Prince have been changed due to some experiences I have had as a fan, but it has nothing to do with being online or Prince.org.

'I don't hate him, but I don't love him like I used to'
Sounds like that quote from 'The Everlasting Now'!

Anyway, Prince.org has shown me that Prince has quite possibly the most diverse, analytical and mostly level-headed fan base there currently is.
Visiting sites devoted to the likes of Michael Jackson and David Bowie are enough to induce vomit, so excessively high is the unalloyed worship and arse-kissing that is doing the rounds there.

So, yeah, the org is a great place to visit, mostly for the healthy dollops of cynicism that is to be found here.

Plus, I just love annoying the hell out of the "fams"!!!

Out of curiosity, why is cynicism needed when you're a fan of someone or their art??...If you like the album, you like it...and if you like the artist, you like them...I mean, there are worse things in life than thinking New Power Soul is a great CD...lol At what point do we decide that "they", as fans, will be better off experiencing a dose of "our" percieved reality??

It's just the real world mirrored on the internet... or maybe not... My take on what he said was that it is always good to hear an opposite opinion to broaden your horizons a bit... I do, however, believe that different opinions on important matters are much more vital, but it is still a lot of fun to debate people...

Sometimes I will even take a stance that is opposite of my own beliefs and argue that point for a while... it is good for you.

I see what you mean Lewis. I think there are several reasons for this to happen, which all relate more or less to eachother
.
First, if you expose yourself to a website where anybody is allowed to post their opinions you will find both negative, as positive and also pretty neutral opinions about the man and his music.
The question is: How much do you let these opinions get to you? If you agree with them, then it is logical that it changes your perceptive of the man and/or his music as well.
If you can say that you are now more cynical about Prince then it could have to do with you being more open to the more negative negative opinions.

Secondly, prince.org is an amazing way to get all kinds of information about Prince. If you look it all up, read it all and think about it all, then it is logical that in all this information you will find some (possibly very) negative sides as well as positive sides. Prince is no saint, so it is pretty normal that you will find negative facts about him, which in turn will color your perceptive about the man.
Then it is again the question: How much do you let this information change your perspective?

Thirdly, if you spend a lot of time here, it is also logical that your "prince world" has grown a lot since you came here. Like wellbeyond pointed out, before he came here, his "prince world" was fairly small and there were lots of things he didn't know about... much easier that way to stay in state of "bliss" about the man and the music.
The point is that in every relationship, whether it is a very personal one or, in this case, a little less personal, you will most likely to meet someones "bad" sides after you have gotten to know the person better. In the case of Prince, this is no different, he is human too, thus he has flaws. And those flaws may make you feel more cynical about him and/or his music, but then the question is again: How much do you let it color your perception?
You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

LoL...Oh, don't I know it..lol..I'll argue my own beliefs in my own head sometimes if I'm bored...

But my take on the rest, though, is more along the lines that when it comes to being a fan of anyone or anything, it really isn't necessary to be "exposed" to opposite views, and definitely is not necessary to have them forced upon you...it's all a matter of taste...and I hardly doubt I'll be better of if while eating my favorite meal at a restaurant, I'm constantly being told by others at my table how nasty tasting my food really is, and that I need to "wake up" and realize it..lol..

I guess, in my opinion, that everyone here has been a "fam"-type at some point in their life when it comes to Prince...we've all had some point during Prince's career where we felt he was the baddest mf around, who's albums and singles and tours were better than all of his peers...in the "real" world, if someone notices a Prince CD on my desk here at work or hears Prince playing from my car stereo, and then excitedly says "I love Prince!!", it never occurs to me that they would be better off with their enthusiasm diluted...I simply smile and laugh a little, and then think to myself "Yeah, I know what it's like to be so excited about Prince...I've been there myself"...

ICENINE: Classic! Yeah, I agree with that. I also mentioned that it is much more important to have opposing views on important things... When it comes to people's appreciation of music, everything is an opinion and nobody's opinion is better than anyone else's.

ICENINE: You are damned right! There was a time in my life when I was extremely in to Prince... his newer music doesn't thrill me that much, but I still want to hear it all... even preaching and all that... I gotta hear it. I still think that he is one of the greatest live performers ever!

On your last point: I was just thinking about that exact same thing earlier and I wondered if the population of those who call themselves "fams" is comprised mainly of people who have not been into Prince for a LONG time and he is newer to them.

I agree with you, Abrazo, except for this one line: "Like wellbeyond pointed out, before he came here, his "prince world" was fairly small and there were lots of things he didn't know about... much easier that way to stay in state of "bliss" about the man and the music."

Since you mentioned me, I wanted to point out that I was never in a state of "bliss" about the man...only about his music...I really didn't think much, if at all, about Prince the person...for the most part it was irrelevant to my enjoyment of the music...

I dunno...like I said, I know what it's like to be heavily into Prince...I was myself thru the 80's and the early 90's...so I understand what it is they're feeling, to an extent...I may not understand how they can become so excited after hearing "We Gets Up", but still...lol

Yep...he made almost every other album I'd buy just seem so dull in comparison...but after I heard both "Graffiti Bridge" and "Diamonds & Pearls", my enthusiasm waned a LOT...still found enough on his subsequent albums to love, or else I wouldn't be part of P.org today...and I don't really mind focusing more on what I love than on what I hate...yet at the same time I have no qualms about telling others what I hate..lol...

But, to me anyway, he's not the "baddest mf around" anymore...but to other fans, he is...as much as I roll my eyes at "We Gets Up"(lol), to someone else that song to them is what "DMSR" was to me...and I wouldn't want to deprive them of that, at all...I'll debate the artistic merits till the cows come home(didn't know I had cows at home, did ya..), but hey, if Emancipation, Chaos & Disorder and New Power Soul is what makes them huge Prince fans, then great, hop on the bus..lol...

Its funny...for me, Ive always been a bigger Wendy and Lisa fan. Actually discovered Prince's music through them. But, during the start of the net...there were no sites dedicated to the girls, I got all my news info on them through Prince related sites...Le Grind and Prince Family to be specific..when those two puppies went under, I migrated to here...

I dont really have issue with people calling themselves fams or being accessive with their devotion with Prince. What I dont understand is, why do they have to get all emotional when people have a different view then them? Just understand its an opinion and agree to disagree...IMHO. wink
