Prince re-records and reinterprets old classics...

A long while back there was a rumour that P was going to re-record his back catalalogue. This may fill some people with horror, but I always get jubilantly moist whenever Prince re-interprets an old song in a new way during gigs, and I thought this was the best news I ever heard !

When I heard the "Purplemix" and the new take on Darling Nikki (admittedly brief) I went into excitement overdrive.

Who else but Prince would be so brilliant as to release a greatest hits album that was actually completely new interpretations of his old classics !

I went to bed early every night just to make the day come sooner !

But it never happened.

WHY !

This was one of the most brilliant ideas ever, and if our Purple Genius ever wants to get back in with the record buying masses I have a suggestion...

Package a new Cd up with a free Cd of 12 old hits rewritten.

And then promote it using the old hits.

Please.

What do y'all think ?

i think they finished the re-recordings last year.
to re-release old stuff its like livin in the past. i dont know how much money prince got from cd`s like the greatest hits from last year but in my opinion they should release new music with some better plans for worldwide distribution.
can`t understand wy TRC isn`t released everywhere - the old fans would come back if they could.
TRC would doin not that bad in europe - but just hardcore fans know about it -
sorry about my bad english..lol

Interesting. I thought the Purplemix version of "Darling Nikki"(wiith the amazing NPG band)was tight like a virgin!!!! Michael B drumming added spice to that particular version. I would have loved to have heard the whole NPG version of that song. I think a greatest hits reinterpretation album wouldn't be as bad an idea as some people think.

I seem to remember Prince originally re-recording his back cataogue with the intent of using them to replace his WB albums. Thankfully it looks like that won't happen, I much prefer the idea of having them as an "alternate best of" type album.

Thinking about it, I'm sure I remember Prince saying that this re-recorded best of was going to be a double, and would also include 3 or 4 new tracks as well... but that was about a year ago (and you know how he changes his mind about things...so who knows).

Personally I'd really love to hear these "new masters"
(as long as they don't "replace" the originals)

Thanks for your replies.. glad to see I'm not alone ! And don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed year 1 of the NPGMC, and I thought TRC was an interesting album, not my personal favourite, but I would have to say, Prince's best album im many ways.

The only weird thing is, TRC closed a lot of doors for me. It made me suddenly lose the excitement I used to get. It made me feel that Prince has moved into a different place, and a lot of the old fire has gone.

Fair do's though, it has been replaced with a real warm and interesting feel.

Now, when am I going to see a CD from NPGMC ?

I don't know, remember what he did to 1999. Yes it was a reinterpretation, but it was definitely not better or as good as the original. Then again it did suffer from the Kirky J treatment. Maybe some reinterpretations with the new band woudn't be so bad.
