Prince in the Great Music Debate

There is a reference to Prince in the BBC1 Great Music Debate, regarding his angst with recording corporation giants. There's some other really interesting articles in the Debate pages, all about the potential demise of the music industry. The readers comments are pretty sound too.

I don't think record buyers have ever entered into Prince's thoughts. Some would say he's now a little greedy himself.

But not me, i love the guy! wink

Aaahhh... record buyers HAVE entered into his thoughts... it's just that he only needed his record buyers to support him to get "free"... free to ripp them off that is! evillol

besides, how many of you lots know about COurtney Love's lawsuit against Universal/Geffen records?

She had a good case, which could have changed industry practices dramatically if she wouldn't have settled out of court... for $$$.

All those artists complaining are a bunch of sell-outs themselves just the same, and that includes Prince who sold out several times for tens of millions of dollars.

And please don't forget that prince and just about any other major artiusts wouldn't have come as far as they did without those "greedy corporations"putting money in their pockets. Without them Prince.org wouldn't have existed. Without them all of you wouldn't have been able to even enjoy Prince's talent and art...

well the art he used to create! evillol

hmm... given how many artists end up broke, its pretty clear that in general they're only viewed as products. I found this on allmusicguide.com and was planning to post it on a separate thread. Kinda interesting opinion on the demise of the Jungle Brothers- trailblazers for and posse members of DeLa Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.

Though Straight Out the Jungle had not sold in large quantities, Warner Bros. signed the trio in 1989 and released a second album, Done By the Forces of Nature, that same year. Though it was issued around the time of De La Soul's groundbreaking 3 Feet High and Rising LP and gained just as many positive reviews, the album was overlooked by most listeners. The Jungle Brothers' chances of mainstream acceptance weren't helped at all by a four-year absence after the release of Done By the Forces of Nature, inspired mostly by Warner Bros.' marketing strategies. Finally, in the summer of 1993, J Beez Wit the Remedy appeared, complete with a sizeable push from Warner Bros.; unfortunately, the large amount of promotion failed to carry the album. Obviously not learning from their earlier mistakes, Warner Bros. also delayed the release of the group's fourth album, Raw Deluxe, until mid-1997. V.I.P. followed in early 2000, and All That We Do was released in 2002. — John Bush
