Nona mentions Prince in her Essence magazine interview

In the May 2003 issue of Essence magazine Nona Gaye & Natalie Cole are on the cover. They talk about their famous fathers, troubled past and their plans for the future. Nona speaks about her relationship with Prince and this is what she says.

Nona: I’m trying to stay focused on my career and my son. If I let a man in right now, I don’t think I’d be able to handle it in the right way. I have the potential to be self-destructive, so I’m working on being more aware of what I’m doing and who I’m doing it with. For a long time I wasn’t aware. I was with Prince for three years staring from when I was 18….

Natalie: when we heard Prince was with this little 18-year-old child, we said,” Oh, God! Bless her heart.” Prince was…..

Nona: …not really stable. And I wasn’t either. I was still into drugs big time. I never really knew him, and I never let him really know me. I tried to be this woman I thought he wanted, very passive, just letting him lead. He was 16 years older than me. He told a friend of mine he was going to marry me and take care of me. I knew I wouldn’t get anything better than that from him, so I believed it. But after that we were in New York, and he asked me to come see his show. Mayte, one of his dancers, flashes the engagement ring he’d given her from the stage. When I asked him about it afterward, he was very evasive and defensive. I haven’t spoken to him since. He did marry Mayte. And it upsets me that we ended things that way, because at one point he was really, important to me.

U know what, what Nona said was very deep. People thought that was trippin' when told them that Prince is a very controlling man. He want things his way or the highway and that ain't cool. 4 a woman who want 2 b in a relationship with him have 2 b very careful, very strong, and very smart. U have 2 xpect the unxpected with him most of the time. Prince does tend 2 break women hearts and there r plenty of women out there 2 prove it. In my opinion couldn't marry him. But yeah, of course would fuck him. We would b nothing more than bed pals that's 4 sho'. He would give a new term 2 SUGAR DADDY.

Well this story reminds of the "Beautiful Experience movie" where Nona sees Prince kissing Mayte during "Now"... In the film her character thinks she has a special relationship with Prince but not the one she really thought it was... the message is that she needs to open herself more to people...

Of course he must be a difficult personn having his own precise ideas on things but on the other hand i think the guy's smart and has a curious way to teach lessons (if lessons is what it's all about...)

Well I don't see why she would lie about it all now so I believe her and Prince . . . I sure hope he has grown up and thinks with the head on his neck.

Clearly, she's still hung up about her whole relationship with Prince.

Every time I read a Nona Interview, If Prince gets dropped in the mix, it always goes into some sad sop story of "What Could Have Been"

At least she acknowledges that she's unstable, but I think it's a bit worrying that she also mentions that she doesn't think she can handle another relationship based on what Prince (so called) done to her 8 or so years ago - Move ON!

If Nona's daddy were around, I think 4 sure he'd be singing 2 her "What's Goin' On!"
