RUDEDOG'S OAKLAND PARAMOUNT CONCERT REVIEW!

Here is my Oakland Paramount report, thanks to Cecy for helping me remember
all the details from the show! Excuse the typos please smile
The soundcheck started(at 5pm) with Prince speaking from behing the curtain
in front of the Exit at the side of the stage next to the first two rows.
He spoke into the mic from behind the curtain saying: "NPG MUSIC CLUB!"....
audience: where are you? "DIDN'T THEY TELL YOU I"M INVISIBLE?" audience laughs
RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOUR HUNGRY. NOW KEEP YOUR HAND RAISED IF YOU'RE WILLING
TO PAY FOR YOUR FOOD. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO EAT?.....EGGS??...OMLETTE??
audience: eggs?? THATS THE ONLY THING I KNOW HOW TO MAKE.
A few minutes later he came from out of the curtain and walked RIGHT in
front of us(in the front row) with the sly grin on his face.
The band had already been playing some instrumental which stopped as soon
as Prince hit the stage. Prince hit the piano and remained there for the
whole soundcheck. Some guy went up to the stage and gave him a photo collage
with an card. Prince said "Whats up with all these gifts, your presence
is gift enough for me. He looked at the collage and said, oooooh, when
I see picture of my face all glued together like that I go....ohhhh.."
Prince asked him to take to take it back, but leave the card. (At the
end of the concert, the card was still left there). He told the guy I'll
give you something later....don't worry I'll find you. (Audience laughs)
...I will find him too!" Then went into a long version of The Ghetto.
No one really was sure of what song he was playing until he starting singing
the lyrics: THE GHETTO. After that, he mentions the word EXPECTION, then
he went right into the song, twice(due to working on John's drumming).
We assumed it was a song from Xenophobia because after the soundcheck, they
played the WHOLE album over the PA and we heard Xenophobia(TWICE) and
we heard the song Xpectation on the album which sounded EXACTLY like
the song they did on the soundcheck. After that song, he did a great
version of Ballad Of Dorothy Parker/4 without John Blackwell's
drum solo. He right into She Loves Me For Me, very sparse version of it.
Hardly sung the chorus and changed up the lyric: ...."this one I can take over
my mama's house" to "this one I can take over my GRANDMA'S house".
He paused a second before the slight lyric change. You can probably
make your own assumption about the lyric change. He had an ear piece
change, and went into The Condition Of The Heart. Many ppl in the crowd
were yelling out song titles, one person yelled out EXTRAORDINARY...Prince
then commented "Yes it is extraordinary that you're yelling out song
titles to me!" (audience laughs) "I'm the chef, I'm gonna feed..yoouuuuu"
Next song was Cream which was done on the piano, and added lyrics to Girls And Boys then
went back into Cream. At one point in the soundcheck Prince asked how
many ppl went to the LA show, many ppl cheered. He then mentioned that
in LA, they take the "designer drugs" over there, "you guys don't, right?".
"We had Sheila up there, but she wasn't doing nothing. She snuck up on
me, surprised me...I thought she was a rabid fan." "You know who Victor
Wooten is??" audience: yeah! "Rhonda invited him to the Celebration this
year. She invited him so she can still licks off of him(looking at Rhonda)
...TELL THE TRUTH(pointing at Rhonda)" Rhonda gives Prince the shame
shame gesture(two fingers rubbing against each other). Prince: "Thats
why I invited Larry"(I guess meaning Rhonda can steal licks off of him).
He then asked for the time which was then 6:10pm. He said: "I gotta to
go get my hair done, because your critics out here are gonna say the
concert was great, but his hair was all jacked up"(audience laughs)
He decided to do one more song since we all were screaming for another song.
Some loud freak girl yells out MINNESOTA RULES! Prince said "what she say?"
and he said "Minnesota rules?? No it doesn't, Minnesota just had a snow storm
so I'm staying out here for as long as I can."
The final song he did for the soundcheck was Do U Lie. This time we
impressed him, the whole NPGMC sang the song! Prince swung the mic around
towards the audience and just smiled and was in awe that we knew the WHOLE
song! He did tease us at the part in the song where it goes: I..I...I since
we kind of muffled through it. At this point he said he had to go get
his hair done." He takes the mic from the piano, slowly walks over to the
center stage and puts into the stand and gives us all a slow stare
and gives us a slow goodbye salute teasing us and just walks off smiling.

Ok, one and half hour break here, the Xenophobia album was played like
twice, put me sleep after awhile LOL!! The album seemed cool, all instrumentals, weird
sounds. Still not quite Madhouse to me smile Security seemed very relaxed.
T-shirts were VERY expensive, $40 for the Xenophobia shirt, $30 for other shirts
$30 for the One Nite Alone Tour book.

Prince actually started the concert LATE this time, at about 8:30pm.
The show was hyped, but nothing unusual really happened, so I'm just
gonna go through the highlights of the show. Rainbow Children was great!
During the guitar solo, he sat on the steps to the stage right in front
of us(front row), crossing his legs, he just jammed on the guitar.
During 1+1+1=3, some old guy came on the stage and did some weird funky
dances, crawling on the floor, and almost humping Prince. Prince said
"DON'T HIT YOUNG MAN!" Bobby(from the BayNPG) and another girl with a
shirt saying(...time to rise) was also brought up on stage. When the
security guards saw Bobby dancing, they moved far away from the stage,
to keep from getting hit by Bobby's wild dancin'. Bobby was wearing a big
purple coat. Prince called him a pimp. Bobby took off his coat and was
wearing flashing bright glitter sweater. Prince said, now we got
MICHAEL JACKSON! During the Other Side Of The Pillow, he made a joke about
"everyone having an uncle that dances like this when they're drunk"
He did some really funny dances with drunk dips, the crowd was on the floor!
Robot moves and sticking his butt out, he had the crowd laughing! The band
was having a ball with it! Security couldn't help but laugh also.
During the radio station speech, he mentioned great bands like Earth, Wind And Fire
and OAKLAND'S own Graham Central Station, then he went into a pretty
funny version of ONE IN A MILLION, Prince even used Larry's deep voice.
Prince was impressed by ppl being really hyped during certain new songs
like Xenophia and even Everlasting Now. He may be doing this for all the
other concerts, but Cecy especially noticed that he had the audience a lot
of the lyrics during the Piano Medley. During How Come U Don't Call Me
Anymore, the mic was handed to me to imitate what John Blackwell "HEY"
and I kinda goofed with a off key "HEeeY". Totally caught me off guard!
Purple Rain was OVER religious talking how we shuold all know God's true
name. But he really hit me and other ppl hard on when he talked about unity
and how inside the theatre, we we in perfect unison/harmony, but outside
of the concert we're so devided. He asked, "whats wrong with us, when
we leave this theatre"...fights in the parking lot, so forth. That really
made a lot of sense and effected a lot of ppl. He mentioned that this past
year has been a turbulent one. During Joy In Repetition....a long cool version of
it..he talked the "theocratic order" and how woman has a place, but its
determined by God, not by Man. "This has nothing to do with you brother,
its about her and God" is what Prince said. Probably to clear up Prince
beliefs on the role of the woman(being BEHIND the man, instead of in front)
Anna Stesia came off pretty strong, everyone enjoyed it! The overall
concert was great, a lot of songs played here, not played elsewhere.
The crowd was in a GREAT mood and Prince fed off of that saying many times
"I"m having fun here tonite!", "Call the babysitter, we're gonna be here all nite"
or "Yall are crazy". Many smiles and facial gestures like he was impressed
with the crowd's energy, enthusiasm, and how they knew most of the lyrics,
especially with the new songs. I guess, in a way, the crowd made up for
that last aftershow he did here in Oakland, Fillmore when we forgot the lyrics
to the song, Paisley Park. The only drawback, NO AFTERSHOW sad
Still the show was long, 3 hours, and got to hear a lot of material, old
and new.

Excellent report! We were in the 5th row and couldn't tell what he said during BODP. In L.A. he said, "fruit cocktail--I'm a vegetarian!" Did he change the lyric last night?

man i hate to be such a stickler for accuracy, but Prince wasn't speaking to us from behind the curtain, he was sitting in the the middle of the theatre ducked down in his seat, like he'd been doing at all the other soundchecks. Just when people started spotting him, he got up and walked up on stage . . . thanks for the report, beautiful nite it was !!!!

You guys kiss his ass so much. You are true addicts. I love how you tell everything he says except the bullshit. There is too much frosting on this burnt-ass, lop-sided cake. The three hour concert was pretty funky, I'll admit that, he had a great relationship with the audience and the whole place was jumpin' But the sound check was lame and there was no after party. So anyone with a non-club ticket got the same show. Only the first few rows got some perks. Lets not forget to mention he kept saying "call the babysitter you aint getting home til dawn" well I got home at midnight 6 hours prior to his promise. I was VERY disappointed there was no aftershow. Actually I cried all the way home. It was the ONLY reason I joined the club. Sorry I'm not a fanatic, but don't think I haven't paid my dues, I use to try to get into all the after parties in NYC, standing outside til 4am, running to this club and that, all to no avail. I thought finally I get to go without the leg work and disappointment. Wrong, not much leg work but more money than I could really afford and as always disappointment. As my husband joked its probably all my fault, just wasn't meant to be, sorry everyone had to suffer due to my Karma.

And what about the Santana torture. He kept insinuating that Santana was going to come out and jam, the crowd would go wild but no Santana, no Sheila E. I can't believe they performed in other cities and not their hometown. He even bragged (during the soundcheck) about how great LA was and who showed up.

A note to members, try to avoid the aisle seats unless your tall or big. I sat there so I had more room to dance but there were so many people trying to rush down the aisle and sneak up front that it was really distracting. And not to mention the members, at least a hundred, that stopped by every row "Is that seat taken?" Yes! They are all taken get the last seat in the last row and sit down. I really wanted to pimp slap some members cause they were still trying to get those seats in the middle of the show. And when its a slow song, sit down, get some rest, your gonna need it.

Also people, when your making your setlist be sure to note which songs he had the audience sing and not himself, its cute the first time, but I really wanted to hear him do Starfish and Coffee.

This was not the "greatest experience of my life", having my daughter was and I wish I had spent the $225 (membership and concert) taking a trip with her.

Peace and Love to all! I'm outta here for good!

Well i must say that the soundcheck 4 u guys upstate sounded incredible. i was @ the LA soundcheck & i felt somewhat robbed because of the fact that by the time we got let n @ 5:30, prince was @ the piano & he stayed there the whole time. he didn't talk 2 us quite as much. & we heard like 3 songs play while we were w8ing 4 security who was draggin' ass about opening up the doors 4 us.

I don't know if my Xpectations were 2 high 4 soundcheck but Prince didn't seem as enthusiastic @ r souncheck as he appeared 2 b @ others from the reports i've read. yeah, yeah, he made us laugh n stuff but something was a little off about his stage presence durring the soundcheck n my opinion. i feel like we didn't get enough attention.

& Candy dulfer was missin' ques, like she was daydreaming or something. Prince seemed 2 b a bit impatient w/ the band. I don't know if they'd all had an argument a couple of minutes b4 we got n there or what, but i smelt a little attitude coming from somewhere. maybe it was just the funky nusic.
If I Could B Muse 2 the Pharaoh...

That was you man?? I was trying to hear what you were telling the lady next to me, when BAM you and my friend next to me pushed me right in front of Prince's mic! Man, I wish I was paying attention. I really goofed on that one smile

But the sound check was lame and there was no after party.

What was wrong about the soundcheck?? Damn, some ppl are so picky?? Did you want to hear the song exactly the way they sound on record or something?? Damn, he did a lot of cool shit in the soundcheck. Yeah, I'll admit, he gave us a near 2-hour gap between the soundcheck and the show. At last years Oakland soundcheck, it seemed like he played for way more than an hour. My only complaint was the sound check wasn't long enough, nonetheless he did some pretty cool performances.

Man, the aftershows aren't guaranteed. I don't know why ppl think he'll do the SAME EXACT thing for every tour date. I more than anyone there wished that there was an aftershow, but I'm not holding it against him. We got a 3 hour show!! FUCK! Plus a cool(but short) soundcheck. Not to mention, we got great fuckin seats! Oh and I guess I won't mention he played a REALLY small, intimate venue even though he can still sell larger venues pretty well still(even for a guy who hasn't had a hit record for what 10 years??).

I was VERY disappointed there was no aftershow. Actually I cried all the way home. It was the ONLY reason I joined the club.

Dude, you're an idiot. You got a great show, a soundcheck...everything promised and more and you still whine like a little bitch. My oh my, did you want a blowjob or have Prince personally take you backstage for a special performance JUST FOR YOU? Come on, those aftershows are not promised. And the best ones are the ones he's really into. What if we got an aftershow and it sucked?
Shit, then you wuold be complaining it sucked! I'd rather have an aftershow that he would be into doing, not done out of obligation. The show and soundcheck were obligations so that he should do anyways.

And what about the Santana torture. He kept insinuating that Santana was going to come out and jam, the crowd would go wild but no Santana, no Sheila E. I can't believe they performed in other cities and not their hometown. He even bragged (during the soundcheck) about how great LA was and who showed up.

????? This kind of complaining I just don't get. He mentions someone's name and all of a sudden its ASSUMED there will be a duet. THe show was on a Wednesday, Santana and Sheila probably had things to do the next day, ever think of that? Oh no, if I can take the day off work, then why can't everyone else? Am I right?

Also people, when your making your setlist be sure to note which songs he had the audience sing and not himself, its cute the first time, but I really wanted to hear him do Starfish and Coffee.

Whats the point? He did perform the songs, right? He did sing at some points in the songs. Prince likes when ppl sing for him, shows that we like his music. Thats what makes a Prince concert great, he lets his fans be themselves and interact with him with the music. If you just want to hear him sing Starfish And Coffee, put on Sign O The Times.

This was not the "greatest experience of my life", having my daughter was and I wish I had spent the $225 (membership and concert) taking a trip with her.

Oh man, demand your money back! Please, do us all a favor and just drop being a Prince fan, or spending ANY money on him. I can understand complaining when its reasonable. But I don't think there is ANY way you'll ever be satisfied.

Peace and Love to all! I'm outta here for good!

No it wasn't that incredible, we probably saw more of him sitting at his piano, but he was there most of the time too and he was mostly talking to people in the first few rows. He mumbled so much you could hardly understand him. Like he mentioned Ruby Skye and we all thought he was talking about the aftershow that night.NOT! They played Expection what seemed liked forever.

The sound actually seemed really bad too, I don't know if they weren't playing their best or what, but everything was clearer during the actual show. The sound check is really not that special unless he does a Q&A otherwise your watching a sound check, energy is reserved and people are talking and looking for better seats. One group of girls didn't even know he was on stage when they walked in, one kept saying "I have to go pee, I have to go pee," Then Prince started singing a bit and they jumped "Oh my god Prince is on stage". It was funny I was hoping he'd tell the girl to just go pee and shut up.

Oh yeah Rudedog, I am not a dude, I am a fine ass woman thank you very much!

Ummm, you do know that it was a SOUNDCHECK, not a concert. The best part is when he talks, duh! Mumbled?? You need to take that earwax out of your ears. If you were paying attention, he went through Expection a couple of times because he was trying to work the tech difficulties out. Thats what musicians do at a soundcheck, thats why its CALLED a soundcheck.

"The sound actually seemed really bad too, I don't know if they weren't playing their best or what, but everything was clearer during the actual show."

Again, I guess you're slow. Its a SOUND CHECK! The have a sound check to work out the sound problems. OMG! I think there is more intelligence in an ouce of spam than there is in you.

I'm just being realistic is all, and I'm sorry but when I joined the club they promised alot of shit. and don't tell me they haven't gone back on their promises before. But you guys let him get away with everything. I said it was a great show, but I didn't have to join the club to get the great show, I was told being a member would get me something more, the soundcheck was lame, face it.

Thats not Princespeak, I'm not that into him baby, lol. Thats what I always say and have been for a while when I email people. I really had no idea it was Princespeak or that there was such a thing, as you see I use real words not 2s and 4s and U to replace them. Actually when I say Peace I think of the Sweet Honey and Rock song of the same name, not Prince.

Honestly I'm laughing here, I'm really laughing, I have an org note waiting. This is too funny, its really not that serious, I was disappointed but I have moved on, thats life. I really just wanted people who don't plan to camp out and be in the first few rows to know what it might be like. Everyone has a different experience and every city is different but this was my experience and I have a right to it, its my life and I'm a very centered, well adjusted person with a great life but Prince is not my world and this is my point-of-view. I just see Prince as the capitalist he is and if he can talk shit about all the other capitalist I can talk shit about him.

It could be that Oakland didn't get an aftershow because he had just performed 2 aftershows in LA a couple days before.

LA is the only city on the tour that got 2 aftershows.

Hey Sheanut!

Here's some public appreciation for your post. BTW "That's Supreme Goddess Bitch to you" lol

I just joined the music club and I'm glad to have read your comments. It will help remind me to go into any Prince concert I may get to get to with no expectations, not that I'm saying you had any, I just have a rich fantasy life. lol

Anyway, I feel for you regarding the afterparty. I'm not gonna lie, if I get to a concert and there's no sound check and/or afterparty I will feel some disappointment.

Rudedog, lighten up! She felt some disappointment. Prince has the right not to do an afterparty (they are not guaranteed) and Sheanut has the right to feel disappointed. In every city that did not have an afterparty folks were disappointed.

Sheanut, I hope you don't leave the .org. You are loved!! smile

What was lame about the soundcheck? That he didn't do a Q&A???

You people are really starting to expect too much. The first soundcheck he did in Oakland was run by HIM. It was all about the music until somebody yelled something out, THEN he took the time to talk & answer some questions. I think people are reading all these stories about Prince doing this & that @ the soundcheck & creating GREAT expectations for it. Let him be! I wanted to ask him a question if I got the chance, but I knew I might not get to even if he did talk w/ people. Am I pissed @ him about it? NO. Do I say the soundcheck was lame b/c of it? NO!

So I repeat, what was so lame about the soundcheck?

Lets not forget to mention he kept saying "call the babysitter you aint getting home til dawn" well I got home at midnight 6 hours prior to his promise.

His "promise," huh? Aren't we taking this a bit too seriously? He's hyping you up, letting you know you're gonna have a good time. Yea, I hoped for an aftershow too, but DAMN y'all!

I was VERY disappointed there was no aftershow. Actually I cried all the way home.

You... you cried??? O-KAAAAAY... nuts

It was the ONLY reason I joined the club.

Doesn't it say on the concert page that aftershows/parties aren't guaranteed??? 2 words: fine print. It's your mistake, not his. Believe me, I REALLY was banking on an aftershow too, but shedding tears is a bit much.

Sorry I'm not a fanatic...

Claim it & be proud girl - you crossed the line when you sobbed @ the steering wheel! lol

And what about the Santana torture.

Oh the torture! neutral I forgot about Santana within seconds of the mention, as great as he is. I was just having too much of a good time to be so extremely pissy about every little thing.

Damn, some of y'all are a tortured lot - nitpicking, only seeing the negative. Maybe YOU should stay & I should go! razz
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

You guys kiss his ass so much. You are true addicts. I love how you tell everything he says except the bullshit. There is too much frosting on this burnt-ass, lop-sided cake.

I couldn't agree more CalhounSq. I'm a hardcore fan of the man, but I didn't go cuz I was banking on a weekend show. But I'm not blaming him for scheduling. Yet the people who do go whine about an aftershow that is not guaranteed? Will the whining ever stop?

"Like I said ass kissing, its cool, be a big fan, I know he can do no wrong in your eyes, my post is for people who can barely afford this stuff and who want to know what really happens, you all paint this pretty little picture and its not that perfect. "

On the contrary, I'm probably Prince's biggest naysayer. Again, you must have missed my comments about his over religious portions ofthe concert. Thats the only part I don't like, being preached to. Prince has done wrong, but when Prince does right like he did last nite, we naysayers give him PROPS missy!

I'm just being realistic is all,

Unrealistic more like.

and I'm sorry but when I joined the club they promised alot of shit. and don't tell me they haven't gone back on their promises before.

Ok, please elaborate...you didn't get an aftershow and the concert wasn't what you imagined it would be. Tell me, what would be your perfect concert. I'm sure everyone in the whole freakin world would agree what YOUR idea of a perfect concert is. My point? You can't please everyone and NO ONE can please your ungrateful ass, thats for damn sure.

But you guys let him get away with everything. I said it was a great show, but I didn't have to join the club to get the great show, I was told being a member would get me something more, the soundcheck was lame, face it.

Well, lets see 4 CDs, GREAT SEATS, a soundcheck and a 3 hour concert(Go see Britney, lets see if she does 3 hours) in a SMALL ASS club like the Paramount. Geee yeah, I can see why you're so unsatisfied. I guess next year he should promise a 2 hour show in a HUGE ass venue that holds 13,000 ppl, nose-bleed seats, no souncheck and no possibility of getting into an aftershow without waiting in line.

-I saw him at Radio City 9 years ago, same size as Paramount, and he was more popular then, and he played three nights. I had front row balcony and it was one of the best shows, and I've been closer at all the rest.-

Yes, 9 YEARS AGO, again.....9 YEARS AGO. Let me break it down for you, he doesn't do these venues very often does he?
Yet, YOU got to see him in a venue like that twice within 9 years. How many other ppl can say that?? I sure can't. Man, some ppl don't even know when they get a good thing.

-That's Supreme Goddess Bitch to you.-

Hey, the title is all yours smile

-I plan to! Did I forget to mention that before?-

Yes, it must have slipped your bright mind!

-Thats not Princespeak, I'm not that into him baby, lol.-

Could have fooled me, BABY wink

-Honestly I'm laughing here, I'm really laughing, I have an org note waiting. I just see Prince as the capitalist he is and if he can talk shit about all the other capitalist I can talk shit about him.-

And I am honestly sorry you didn't have a good time. But then again, I'm always sympathetic to those that don't deserve sympathy.

-It not what I was thinking or expecting, but now that you mention it, I'm down!-

Yeah, I would loved for Rhonda to go down on me, but in the real world, things like that don't happen, right?

Also in the real world, we all don't get what we want, we get what we get and we should be appreciative when we get something good. If its bad, then its bad, but so far you're the only person bitchin, welcome to the real world.

-Do you know I am getting org notes from people that totally understand how I feel but have to tell me in private.-

Yeah, sure smile Those are obviously either non-existent or a very silent minority. If what we got was bad, I would say so. BTW, I have also many emails from ppl telling me they think you're wrong. So what, right? I rest my case.

-If we are disappointed we have a right to speak, people should not be attacked for it.-

We?? Is your name Cybil? How many other personalities are in you Cybil? smile

Attacked, please. There is a fine line between being disappointed and whining like a little baby. You play such the victim missy, I guess you're a person that like to do that a lot.

-At least I got enough sense not to include your whole post if I'm only going to reply to one line. lol. I'm just kidding. Lighten up dude!-

What makes you think I have veins popping out of my neck, you're the one thats considering herself "attacked". I was merely stating an opinion. You didn't have to respond, ya know smile

Butters

This is a PRINCE fan site. How come those of us who enjoy the man and his music and don't act like spoiled brats if Prince doesn't behave exactly the way we want him to, are ass-kissers?
Oooooh, Prince didn't do the same thing at this soundcheck that he did at that soundcheck. Ooooooh, Prince preached too much. Can't you just enjoy the moment and stop bitching so much? If the guy came off the stage and hit you on the head with his guitar, then I could see complaining. lol
It's like some of you expect Prince to be perfect 24/7. I guess the "asskissers" have discovered something the whiners have not: PRINCE IS HUMAN. He can't make every single fan happy. I go to a Prince show to have a good time. So far I haven't been disappointed. I hope for an aftershow, but I don't EXPECT it.
I DO think Prince is one of the best live performers out there today. I DON'T think Prince can walk on water.
