Indianapolis aftershow report (w/ setlist) Prince
Aftershow at Birdy's Bar and Grill Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Tuesday, March 12, 2002 1:20 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. (70 minutes) ----- - Atomic Dog - Touch [not sure on the title; Prince included a few lines from Stevie Wonder's "I Wish"] - The Ride - Calhoun Square - Paisley Park - Oye Como Va / Soul Sacrifice The band was the same as it was for the main concert: Renato Neto, Rhonda Smith, John Blackwell, Najee, and Greg Boyer. The songs were stretched out with lots of jamming. Admission was free with an NPGMC laminate and $30 without. Samnation (of the NPGMC and the Chicago Nation) was working the door. Apparently the original plan of a simple afterparty at Lotus was scrapped; a source told me that this aftershow was arranged at approximately 3 p.m. on the day of the concert. It wasn't a total surprise, because during the soundcheck Prince asked us if we knew a good place in town for an aftershow. (Several people, including myself, suggested the Slippery Noodle Inn, which prompted Prince to joke that he couldn't play at a place with a name like that.) During the aftershow, Prince confirmed that this year's Celebration will begin on June 21st. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

That's awesome Matt. I thought he might play since there was no concert the next day.
Didn't Calhoun Square rock ? He did at the Cleveland soundcheck and it was a real treat !!! How was the regular show ??? Anything different ?

The aftershow was VERY unplanned but went off without a hitch. The room is a big "pole barn" with horrible acoustics, but it had to be there because of CONtractual(lol) obligations with Clearchannel Entertainment. Birdys books all small venue clearchannel promotions, blah, blah, blah. The man did overome the sound issues and put on one hell of a set. I would have rather seen him at The Slippery Noodle, regardless of the name. Love and lust, they both have 4 letters...

They're usually announced immediately after the concert ends. The Indianapolis aftershow was announced as an "official after-show party and show"--that, combined with: 1) Prince's comments at the soundcheck; and 2) the fact that Indy was the last concert on this leg of the tour, led me to believe that he would perform. I also enjoyed hearing "Paisley Park" (done with a blues feel) live for the first time. The regular concert was good too, although I don't believe it was any different from previous shows on this tour. I went to both the Louisville & the Indianapolis shows, and I have to disagree with Matt,"just slightly".....There were some differeces that I noticed between those two shows, and have to say ...that Louisville had a much better soundcheck and concert all around....though the aftershow in Indianapolis made up for what the concert lacked.....out of the two, concerts, I pick Louisv....but, as far as live performances go...from any artist.....With this tour Prince is definately KING!!!...At any location....if you get his worst performance, it'll still be better than anyone else you go to see!!!

Indy soundcheck started around 6 or so. Prince came on the stage and asked where everyone was sitting for the show, most said in the back etc. He said that he had just come from a meeting about the whole ticketmaster thing and that the problem would be fixed for the rest of the tour. 2 ladies had jackets airbrushed w/ Lovesexy era pix and he grabbed one asked where he could get 1. He also mentioned the woman that was eating at the Cleveland show..Also asked if we saw the Time Machine and said it was bunk but the original was good. Then grabbed guitar and started playing "pass the peas" which went into "Everlasting Now". he stopped, went over directions w/ Najee and then started back into the breakdown portion of the song. After he finished GamerX asked if he could come up and play The Christ/ Prince gave him the hohner and cued the band while he went to the rhodes. Gamer represented!!! MUCH PROPS---that took big sack!! afterwards I think he played "other side of the pillow" he asked Najee to play it with the soprano sax, he liked that version better. Then he told story about Larry Graham being mistaken for Famous Amos on airplane..people began to shout different songs for him to play, I said "skintight" and thats what they played. I may be a little sketchy on some of this but there were other Orgers there who can fill in the gaps! PEACE

Hey Matt, I'm impressed with this post! How did you remember all the songs in order like that? I didn't see you writing them down or anything!
Thanks again for mentioning me Prime Time, I'm glad I got there early and met you guys! In response to Jaikman, I know the sound check may have been better in Louisville because it was longer, but the one in Indy was short and meaningful, not just because I played, but because... well damnit because I played! LOL! =======================

Thanks... actually, I just kept a running list in my head, and as soon as the show was over, I went out to my car and scribbled it down on paper. Fortunately there weren't too many song titles to remember. In the past I'd bring a pen and some index cards to write down setlists, but I've gotten lazy.
