Also, how sad is it that his daughter has to grow up without a father, and left with a drug addict for a mother?

I remember at the time thinking he was my generation's JFK, our John Lennon. I vividly remember listening to Radio K on my headphones (Mpls' local college radio station) while working a temp job reoganizing a filing system. They came on and kept telling people to stay tuned, they had really big news and were just waiting for it to be confirmed. After they made the announcement, they played the Smithereen's "I'm Sick of Seattle". It was surreal. The announcer later apologized, stating they didn't mean to play the song in that context, it was already in their playlist for that time.

I was thinking about this today especially since so many radio stations were remembering Kurt's death and it got me to thinking if people would be saying that Nirvana had so much impact if Kurt had not killed himself. It seems to me that it wasn't just Nirvana but also Pearl Jam and Soundgarden to name two, who helped to redefine music at that point in time but since Kurt was selfish enough to kill himself, his band gets the majority of that glory.

I'm also bothered by how some people, although no one on this thread in particular, seem to be glorifying him and his death more than necessary. I was reading an article in the paper today who made out his suicide to be a classic act of rock and roll bravery instead of the cowardly act that it is. I've also read many other articles where Kurt Cobain's heroin use was shrugged off as being a "treatment" for his chronic stomach pain. what the fuck? It's called go to a doctor and get legal medicine that will not turn you into a drug addicted vaccum of self hate!

I just have a hard time mourning a man who took himself out and left behind his baby and a hot mess of a wife. He really should have tried to realize that the world doesn't end at the tip of his nose.

Sadly, a lot of the time that isn't possible. For someone who is massively depressed and suicidal, there is nothing but the pain their head and their heart.

it's just such a waste...

PanthaGirl, last Friday's Dateline episode on NBC detailed the debate about whether he was murdered. Very interesting but the suicide ruling likely will remain the official one.

Sad to see such a talent waste his own life. I kinda tripped when they said they only had 3 albums because it felt like so much more. I love this band. It's sad to see that little girl left without a dad and remember how sad it was when Courtney Love read the suicide letter. Uhhh..... sigh

Always had the impression that he was a fairly sweet, simple guy who got in WAY over his head... Right now I'm just sorry for that gorgeous little Francis Bean and wish her mother would make her a little more of a priority in her sorry life...

Kurt seemed to me to be a guy to had a lot of addictions and demons to tame. If he had only gotten over them, he might have lived, but alas, he was a fragile one.

I love Kurt, always will.

i remember afterwards there were shirts made up with the suicide letter printed on them. I find that shit sick.

i also find it incredibly sad that she published his journal. i think it's disgusting when people pimp out their dead loved ones. those journal entires were his own private thoughts, for the most part, and were not meant for the public to ever see. Can't the dead ever rest?

It's sad when people don’t appreciate the life God gave them, the Friends and Family that love them.

he's entitled to his opinion too. Unfortunately.

I'll admit i've never been a fan myself, but even i can see what he brought to the table in terms of reshaping how rock was presented. Death to 'poodle rock' is his legacy. I give him mad props for that. thumbs up!

I saw Nirvana on the Bleach tour and it was the best thing that ever happened to music.

Nevermind was cool but over rated by the media because of the end of Hair metal (that shit had a long enough run).

Much respect to the guy that made me love punk rock. That unplugged shit was dreadful but whatever, he (like a lot of musicians) had issues in his mind.

How can he rest in peace when he was such a mess on earth. When will it be O K to hold people accountable for the miserable pain and hurt they bring into their families life with drug abuse. If it wasn't for him liviing through the big OD he had in Rome prior to his shotgun lunch, he would have died then. My sympathy goes to his daughter, who has her living parent just as crazy as Nancy Spunge. If there is some money left from the royalties and back catalogs, she'll need it for therapy.
