Slow Jam of the Day: "I Just Wanna Stop" by Gino Vannelli (1978)

Warm, soulful and VERY romantic, this is one of the best songs that came out in 1978.This song boasts a sparkling, beautiful arrangement, soaring background vocals, truly heartfelt lyrics and impressive vocal delivery from the underrated Gino Vannelli. It's the type of song that Peabo Bryson or Teddy Pendergrass would have killed for.It became a huge hit on the pop,R&B and adult-contempoary charts.

"I Just Wanna Stop" by Gino Vannelli music

(written by Gino Vannelli-Ross Vannelli)

for your love...for your love

When I think about those nights in Montreal
I get the sweetest thoughts of you and me
Memories of love above the city lights
Ooh,I tried so hard to take it
but oh lord my heart won't make it

(chorus)
I just wanna stop
and tell you what I feel about you babe
I just wanna stop
I never wanna live without you babe
I just wanna stop
for your love

When I think about the way the world must turn (the world must turn)
I get the saddest thoughts for you and me
memories of life and times go on and on
Ooh,I've tried hard to forget it
but oh lord,my mind won't let it

(chorus)
I just wanna stop
and tell you what I feel about you babe
I just wanna stop
the world ain't right without you babe
I just wanna stop
for your love

(saxophone solo)

Ooh,I've tried so hard to take it
but oh lord my heart won't make it

(chorus)
I just wanna stop
and tell you what i feel about you babe
I just wanna stop
the world ain't right without you babe
I just wanna stop
for your love

stop! Ooh ooh ooh,
I just wanna stop, ooh ooh ooh
I just wanna stop, and tell you what I feel about you babe
I just wanna stop, the world ain't right without you babe
I just wanna stop

Do you guys remember his 1981 hit "Living Inside Myself"? I'm gonna have to go out and get a good compilation by him.

DavidEye, you KNOW you ain't right!

Do you know as soon as I saw the title of this thread I had to start rummaging through my cds so I could find this song? I LOVE me some Gino Vanelli! I'm listening to it right now reminiscing about the "old days", lol!

Thanks for the memories, kiddo! You are always so good for pulling the best of the BEST oldies outta your hat!

He's still active on the "smooooth jazz" circuit; a couple years back my best friend took me to a concert of his in S. Florida. He was a little older, and even the slightest bit corny but I LOVED every minute of it! He still has all that curly hair, too. After all these years, I still love me some Gino Vanelli...and Kenny Loggins! Between the two of them if I ever had one of them singing "I Just Wanna Stop" or "Heart to Heart" to me...I would be the fool woman to just be like, "well damn, fine...I'm stying wit'chu, goddamn it!!!"

I remember seeing him do this song on "American Bandstand"..
he was wearing like a jean jumpsuit or something like that,
& when they did a "close-up" of him..
he looked to me like a..
caucasian, moustache-less..
Prince..!

hmmm

the song was cool, though..
in that "MOR" sort of way..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

One of his best tracks.....alongside :
WHEELS OF LIFE

The wheels of life are turning so much faster
The restless hands of time pass me by
There are dreams I'll never live to see
But as long as you believe in me
I'll still feel them on the way
As I take life day by day

Oh the wheels of time are turning so much stronger
The blues of days gone by weigh me down
But maybe love will come to rescue me
And I'll never set you free
Like the sea runs to the shore
I've come back yo you once more

The wheels of life
The wheels of life
The wheels of life
The wheels of life keep turning round and round

And if I should only have one tomorrow
It's a lifetime if I knew
I could spend that day with you

Ooh, the wheels of love will turn my world forever
I want you in my arms for all time
And maybe love will come to rescue me
And I'll never ever set you free
Like the sea runs to the shore
I'll love you forever more

The wheels of life
The wheels of life
The wheels of life
The wheels of life keep turning round and round

The wheels of life
The wheels of life keep turning so much faster
The wheels of life are turning so much stronger

On May 7, 2003 he released his new album Canto

The songs on Canto are in four languages: Italian, French, Spanish and English. Wanting to make sure his pronunciation was flawless; he used a vocal coach and worked with his collaborators until his accents were perfect. There was another dimension to singing in other languages. Emotion. Vannelli says he discovered this early on, when he wrote the song that would ultimately set the tone for this project "Parole Per Mio Padre" ("A Word to My Father").

Believe me, he was the Michael Bolton of his day. Rock critics just hate him. His albums all got no star reviews from Rolling Stone and the like.

He has done some just awful stuff, but he did do some good cuts. David zeroed in on the good ones. He had a real good voice. But he did need better material.
