Pop Song of the day: "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" by Culture Club (1983)

In the spring of 1983,you couldn't escape this song. When you turned on MTV,there was the video.Turn on the pop stations, they were playing it.Turn on an R&B station, they were playing it too. This breezy midtempo song is my absolute favorite Culture Club track. The production is lush and dreamy, the vocals by Boy George are delightfully warm and soulful, and the song just grabs you and won't let go.Interestingly, this song has two choruses. This is the type of song that makes you miss the 80s...

"Time (Clock Of The Heart)"
(written by O'Dowd/Moss/Craig/Hay)

"Don't put your head on my shoulder
Sink me in a river of tears
This could be the best place yet
But you must overcome your fears

(Chorus 1)
In time it could have been so much more
The time is precious I know
In time it could have been so much more
The time has nothing to show

(Chorus 2)
Because time won't give me time
And time makes lovers feel
Like they've got something real
But you and me we know
They've got nothing but time
And time won't give me time
Won't give me time

Don't make me feel any colder
Time is like a clock in my heart
Touch we touch was the heat too much
I felt I lost you from the start

(Chorus 1)
In time it could have been so much more
The time is precious I know
In time it could have been so much more
The time has nothing to show

(Chorus 2)
Because time won't give me time
And time makes lovers feel
Like they've got something real
But you and me we know
They've got nothing but time
And time won't give me time
Won't give me time

(saxophone solo)

Repeat Chorus 1 and 2...

I was absent Dave when you dropped this thread but I do concur that this is one beautiful track. One of my very favorite 80's song. And it might be my favorite Culture Club song. I'm gonna jam this track later on today. It went to number #2 on the charts{it was kept out of the number one spot by The Police's "Every Breath You Take" in 1983} and it made the top 30 on the R&B charts...

Another tough one by them is the underrated "Mistake No. 3 from the 1984 album Waking Up With The House On Fire.

I love this tune it makes me kinda sentimental...I went 2 C their horrible 20th anniversary gig @ The Royal Albert Hall, which is available on the even more horrible DVD, and they didn't play this song. I guess it was cut from the setlist in favour of 'Victims' that other big Culture Club ballad...which George interrupted 2 tell the audience '2 shut the Fuck up & listen'...I remember thinking: 'ah, well u should have played 'Time' instead...'
...Your coochie gonna swell up and fall apart...

I graduated High School in '83. MTV was new and I was young(er). Culture Club couldn't miss... Boy George was who everyone was talking about. I love this song... love this decade and miss those days...

Thanks DavidEye for the memories... smile

Maybe I was a tad foolish at the time, but when Boy George sang this song, I remember thinking what a neat little tune. "You can dance to it." One heartbreak later and this was my joint!

What I like about Culture Club in its heyday was the fact that Boy George was singing mostly about the joys and perils of his love affair with that "straight" drummer guy.

I have The Best of Culture Club CD that I play at work. "Time" and "Miss Me Blind" are the two songs that gets the most favorable reactions from people.

I have always associated this song with graduating from elementary school - 5th grade into middle school. I literally had this song playing in my mind on that day. Every time I hear it, I flashback to that day. Ugh, so long ago. One of my all-time fave Culture Club songs...even from the 80's.
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Good selection, David! This is probably my favorite Culture Club song ("Mistake No. 3" is a close second).

Chris Rock (yes, the comedian) introduced me to this song. He was driving down La Brea in L.A. blasting this song on his radio singing it off-key in his Toyota Camry on a show called MTV's Diary which aired two years ago. That was a funny show and the show had some great songs in it.
