This was before the album came out and the only song we had heard was 1999 single. DMSR came on and I about drove the car off the freeway the beat was so damn NASTY! One of my boys yelled out "Oh Shit!" a few seconds after the keyboard came in at the start of the jam. Nothing like hearing that song and album for the first time. I knew right then, this cat was going to come with some new shit unlike anything we had heard before. The rush of knowing it was the beginning of something fresh is something I haven't felt since. Man,you're bringing back so many memories Remember back when KSOL used to play entire albums every night at Midnight? They played the entire '1999' album on Thanksgiving night,1982.Then,because the response was so great, they played the entire album again on Christmas Eve,1982.Do you remember that? Those were the days. Yep. KSOL was my shit. I had moved out to Sacramento by 80 but used to go down for weekends and hang with my boys going to Warrior and A's games all the time. So many of my memories from 82-85 took place in the East Bay. Remember Cameron Paul and his mixes? KBLX? And that weak am station that used to play hip hop (forgot the station id) Yes,I remember the Cameron Paul mixes.KBLX is still around and they actually play alot of Prince these days. They are the only local station that played his recent single "She Loves Me 4 Me".Not sure about the AM station that played hip-hop,but there was an AM station based in Oakland that played R&B,it was called KDIA.Is that the one you're referring to? oh man yall are my homeboys!!! I grew up in the East Bay and when I returned to Sac on sunday's I'd go the long way...I'd go to Leopold's in Berkley to see what they had and then maybe go over to the city all the time listening to KSOL or KBLX. KSOL or KPOO do you remember that one out of the city? I remember they would play the long versions of all the songs...I miss the Bay then I'd take 80 all the way home. I miss P remember the Kool Jazz Festivals? sneaking into the Palladium? Hey hey hey - 1983 was a great year to graduate from high school. The drinking age in Atl was 18! They moved it up to 19 the following year, and 20, and then 21 - so we were ahead of everyone else. um. not that I gauge my happiness by alchohol availability alone, NO! New Wave was still new, there were few rules to what was hip - so anything went... trench coats, I once wore a preacher robe to the nightclub. Hairstyles were whatever you could do with a bottle of cocacola and some toothpaste (I didnt' know NOTHING about mousse or hairspray). The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

Hey Davideye and others...1983 was the best year for Top 40 pop music in my opinion..Even though 1984 often get the credit from critics and pop music historians as being the best year.....
The year started out real good and just got better and the summer of 1983 was awesome. At the time I didn't have cable TV so I depended on regular tv programming which aired videos through out the week. Music videos were a BIG DEAL then...But on Fridays and Saturdays we had a 6 hour music video show on TBS which aired locally here in Atlanta called Night Tracks{it was on cable for the rest of the USA}. Me and my cousins would stay up and watch videos all the night long...The following songs is what made summer of 1983 so great... ***Stevie Nicks- Stand Back ***Michael Jackson-Wanna Be Startin Something...by this time Epic Records had released this song as the 4th single off of Thriller. ***Thomas Dolby- She Blinded Me With Science{both top 40 and R&B radio was jamming this one} ***Kajagogo-Too Shy ***Men Without Hats-The Safety Dance ***Eddy Grant-Electric Avenue ***Prince 1999...Warner Bros re-released this song as a single in the summer of 1983...the first time they released it {back in autumn of 1982}, it only went to number #44 on the charts. This time it went would go to number #12. ***Taco-Puttin On The Ritz..."If you're blue and you don't know where to go to..why don't you go where fashion sits...puttin on the ritz". ***The Police-Every Breath You Take...This song dominated the summer of 1983 for the most part at the number #1 position{it stayed at number #1 for 8 weeks and was the number one song for the entire year of 1983}. ***Culture Club-Time{Clock Of The Heart}...This was a true summer jam. Everybody was jamming this song in summer of 1983...I remember buying the 45 single and then a few weeks later I bought the cassette tape Kissing To Be Clever and I wore this song out. It went to number #2 on the Billboard pop charts and was kept out of number one by The Police's "Every Breath You Take". It went to number #19 on the Billboard R&B charts that summer. ***Sergio Mendes-Never Gonna Let You Go...This was a nice pop ballad that went to number #4 in the summer of 1983. Great song..one of my favorites of 1983. ***New Edition-Is This The End?...this slow jam was going strong in the summer ***Duran Duran-Is There Something I Should Know In the summer of 1983, me, my cousins and buddies were out of school for the summer. We'd go to our summer jobs and work, visit the arcade and spend lots of money{playing Space Invaders and Ms.Pac Man}, listen to our radio/boomboxes playing all of those great 1983 songs and chase girls...not necessarily in that order . What are you insane? MTV constantly votes Thriller as the greatest video of all time, still -- of course, they bankrolled it, so sure they're gonna love it, but nonetheless, videos are NOTHING compared to what they were back then... now they're yawn-fests, regardless how much money they pour into a video. Back in the day, we had a frickin party JUST to watch the debut of that Thriller video! Dance troupes would learn that damn dance and go perform it at malls. Have you seen anyone doing Destiny's Child video dances at malls? AND - Starting Something was never released as a single, that's why there was no video for it. I know otan pointed this out but I am completely shocked at your comment And Human Nature, though not rotated nearly as much, was a video. Ah, the summer of '83 - I remember it well...
I met my first girlfriend at a party - I still remember what she had on: red short shorts, the cute mini-socks with the balls at the end, white tennis shoes and rapidly developing 13 yr old cleavage (I was 13,too). She was dancing to "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby and it was the sexiest thing I had ever seen!!! She asked me to dance and I half-stumbled, half-tripped my way through the song. (I hadn't got my MJ/Prince moves down yet - that took another six months). Anyway, by the time the party was over, I had already asked her to be "my girl" and she agreed. I was ready to propose marriage by then. I didn't need a ride home, 'cause I was floatin' on cloud nine. I was thinking of our future plans, and trying to figure out when I'd attempt to french kiss her. Things were definitely going my way! I had my girl and I was going to give her the tongue!!! She dumped me a few days later. Still, I'll always cherish that song - there's nothing like your first love... My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Or,maybe because he was waiting to make the huge,big-budget "Thriller" video? It also produced a lot of one-off hits that I love, like:
I'll add more as I think of them.
