The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees

source

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Cher
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Foreigner
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

  • Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield will be presented with the Musical Excellence Award.
  • Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Big Mama Thornton will receive the Musical Influence Award.
  • Suzanne de Passe is getting the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

The induction ceremony will be held on October 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It will air live on Disney+. An edited version will run on ABC at a later date, and will be available on Hulu the day after.

“Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

Happy for Kool and the Gang, Tribe, Mary J., and Norman Whitfield. Still waiting on Mariah, New Edition, Patti LaBelle, and Snoop to get in.

Otherwise, the Hall may want to consider winding this down in another year or 2 as there's not much "Rock and Roll" left to include.

I don't get the Dave Matthews Band hate.

It's a good list in general. Big Mama Thornton feels way overdue for acknowledgement.

Black Crowes need to be nominated I mean I know Chris pissed a lot of people off in the industry but they are royalty with some of the key members of the Hall

What hate?

I'm just curious how they're "Hall of Fame" worthy. What's next, Jack Johnson? The Darkness?

How are they not?

They've been around long enough, 30 years. 10 albums, 30M+ sold, one of the most popular jam bands still active today outside of Phish probably.

And, they were notably the only band I saw perform a Prince song when I attended Bonnaroo in 2010. Boom. Peedub's vote secured.

When I looked at the charts, I was really surprised to see that "Ant's Marching" was only 22 on the adut contemporary chart or something. My God, you couldn't get away from that damn song back then.

Being a violin player, I kinda gravitated to their songs on the radio. I always respected them for not only letting people record their shows via soundboard (until 1995 or so), but saying they didn't care if people recorded their shows in general. This was during the Napster era where Lars Ulrich was being a fucking brat about it and suing people. Dave was like - whatever. We're still getting paid, record what you want.

They make the finest square dance music out there.

I saw them once at a festival, & they weren't bad. Trey Anastasio was with them, & even he didn't annoy me. I'm just glad they played Crash into Me. It was beautiful.

Same with Cher and Dave Matthews Band. In fact, they're the antithesis of the rock and roll spirit. However we know that it's only a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by name.

What does rock n roll really mean here anymore? So weird.

They are obv awarding rappers as they are big draws and the hof doesnt want to seem exclusionary but cmon, they could give more awards to actual rock bands from the alt rock world like yo la tengo, dinosaur jnr, sonic youth, etc.

Understand your gripe but the bar seems to be significantly low for "rock and roll" acts as well nowadays. If the RRHOF is now considered the highest honor for music, do acts like MC5 or T-Rex or the Eurythimics or Depeche Mode belong in the same category as Prince/MJ/Elvis/Beatles/Stones?

*

As stated earlier in this thread, I believe that they need close out the inductions and let the RRHOF stand as is, but that's just my opinion and, hey, I'll still be chiming in on the list of finalists every year smile

In order to be more inclusive they cant just induct artists who fall under the Rock category. Hip Hop has been the dominant music for a while so I expect at some point Hip Hop artists will make up a majority of the RRHOF inductees.

Depends what rock n roll is defined as.
I guess they're going for the broadest possible definition but it Means the awards should be renamed.

I’ve always felt that it should just be titled the Pop Music Hall of Fame. That way, every genre would fit comfortably under that title.
