RSD Pickups

Anybody hit up Record Store Day today?

There were no Prince releases here in the U.S. (I think there's a 94 East in Europe, though). But, I had to grab the Parliament LP and the new Bernie Worrell vinyl.

What'd you get?

No Record Store releases, but yesterday I got David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and last week I bought Come - Prince and the Cure - Head on the Door. All three of those were lps. Also picked up Aersomith "Rock and a hard place" and "live bootleg' Aerosmithon cd second hand.

So I did participate kind of sort of. I have some George Clinton LPs but no Parliament or Funkadelic. I always tell myself I should get some. Bernie Worrel passed the same year as Prince and Bowie and Gene Wilder and Muhammad Ali. He was so vital, he even propped up mid period pretenders and was the mvp of some of the Talking Head records. Such a talent.

Other than The Cure, I like your taste.

And yes, Bernie is legendary.

I was at the Purple Jam in Bern. So because of the Swiss Franc I was a little bit afraid to buy anything on Saturday - I am living in the EU and my bank account is in Euro. But on Monday I will pick up the 94 east, the Parliament, Solar Funk and maybe other records at local stores. cool

I’m preparing for an overseas vacation in a few days and didn’t have time to go out yesterday so I mail-ordered the three records I wanted most from stores’ leftover stock this morning:

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Nocturne 2LP
Fields of the Nephilim - Burning the Fields 2LP
Ladytron - Light and Magic 2LP

That Cure record is my favorite of theirs and my favorite album of 1985. Great purchase.

I was pretty all over the map. Pearl Jam new RSD vinyl for new album, Olivia Rodrigo, queen, Black Crowes 7" singles, Jim Croce last show, Ringo, John Lennon, Kim Wilde, Bowie, U2 and one other that is slipping my mind. But also there were new releases, Swift, The Bacon Brothers and Springsteen (which I'm waiting a bit on). Still some RSD leftovers this year in stores that I want to get Elton John and ALan Parsons are two of them.

This year I planned ahead on it when I got the last, and then a few things got added after the list came out. I'm lucky here in NYC I have a few stores but my main one I have been going to (though not as much in the last decade) for a long time, so I can kind of get "my order" in, they are super small so they don't get a lot of copies of things but as long as you buy what you ask them to try to get you, you're good to go. Mainly as most of you know RSD is when the store gets it, its their's, they can't return something that does not sell.

I might have got more if $ was no issue. I was mighty tempted by the Zappa LP & The Doors CD. But I' m good with my 2 P-Funk LPs.

I don´t think there´s nothing new on the two records though it says on the record set that the second bonus LP has never been before relased on vinyl". I compared it with the Charly Records LP box set (UK) of 2016 and there are also 17 tracks on it (see discogs). I myself had only the bootleg CD before.

With the various releases of the 94 East stuff I can never remember off the top of my head what tracks were on which release, which ones are duplicated on multiple releases, etc.

That said, I was thinking I have all of the stuff on the new one is from a previous CD release, just haven't pulled them from the shelf to double check.

The Cure are absolute legends.

Maybe you're deriding them for goth stereotypes or whatever. My dad was a huge record nerd and would do the same, like they're the epitome of dismal dirge, but that 'The Head on the Door' album is as kaleidoscopic in styles as the very creme de la creme best of Prince albums.

Who derided The Cure? Not me!

I merely stated that they're not to my taste, as in, I do not enjoy them.

In no way is that derision. It's merely an expression of preference.

It's a good thing that we don't all have the same taste. That would be boring in so many ways.

I am a big fan of Siouxise and the Banshees so Nocturne is a very nice pick up. I like Fields of the Nephilim too. I don't know ladytron. In regards to your comment about Head on the Door, - it is a very good album so listenable. Robert Smith's comment about the album at the time was he felt all the songs could be singles - except for 'the screw' and I agree. The Blood and Kyoto song are favorite slept on tracks and also 'a night like this' is cool as well.

Ladytron are whatever, "Black Plastic" is their only classic.

Mmm, fair enough backtrack, but the initial comment seemed teetering on the edge of derision.

I still feel like whatever you do not enjoy about them might not be as present on 'The Head on the Door' album.

Backtrack?!? lol

I didn't backtrack. Both times I mentioned them I stated that they are not to my taste. I don't like them. They're not for me. So what?

If I had sad instead that "they suck", or if I had made fun of them, or if I had chided robertgeorge for liking them, that kind of thing, that would have been derision.
Or, if I had perhaps instead said "The Cure are whatever. "Why Can't I Be You" is their only classic."
THAT would have been derisive. Think about it.

Not everybody has to like everything you like you know.

robertgeorge mentioned David Bowie, Prince, Aerosmith, George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Gene Wilder, Muhammed Ali AND The Cure. I replied that other than The Cure, I liked his tastes.

If I like 7 out of 8 people that someone mentions that's a damn good ratio by any standards. robert didn't get butt-hurt that it wasn't 8 out of 8. Why do you?

And why feel the need to pinpoint what it is about them I don't like, as if it proves a point? I'll make it easy, I don't like ANYTHING about The Cure. Sure, I'm not into Goth in general but specifically I don't like their music and that's more important to me than their image.

Are you someone who needs others to validate your opinions and if they don't you feel they are attacking you or something you love? Don't be so sensitive. It's silly.

I had to swing back by the wrecka stow today to pick up some plastic sleeves for my albums and while there picked up Funkadelic's first album on vinyl. I've had it on CD for over 3 decades but couldn't resist the urge to add a copy of my favorite p-funk album on vinyl to the collection.

Also ordered the Partyman / Cool (Live) 7" from Prince.com. It's on sale for $8.98, but of course it's still twice that with shipping & tax.
