Any Fans of Alice Coltrane?

I made a dive into her music since last month all because of this clip @ 4:39 when she starts playing the harp

This album with Pharaoh Sanders was my next step

I can’t put my fingers on it but her music has such a strange tranquil & healing effect, also I never heard anyone play the harp the way she did, its very ethereal but at the same it carries so much volume too, strange but beautiful contrast.

Hi--I'll call myself a fan but am hardly knowledgeable. I've heard some of her work played on public radio and listened to some that has come on my YouTube suggestion list. It's like an ethereal orchestra of the natural force of sound. Like yourself, I plan to dive in and explore more of her works.

I love that album, especially the title track "Illuminations"

I have never heard her but a couple of years ago I went to the Big Ears Festival and they had a group that called themselves the Ashram Experience and only sung her songs as a tribute to her. I saw them in a church. It was good, and I had meant to check her out directly, but forgot to do so. Your post is a sign that I need to do so. Thanks.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised nod she’s mostly known for being John Coltrane’s widow and the pianist of his last band, but her solo career (especially the 70s albums she recorded) were testimonial of how equally genius she was next to her husband, at least in my opinion.

You’re not dumb at all. Mrs Coltrane’s music is niche from what I noticed, jazz historians/critics talk about her indifferently - or relegate her to the “muse” role they gave to most women who were in strong ties with jazz legends - plus she went into a recluse from the music industry at the end of 70s after opening a meditation center/temple in Malibu and dedicated her time to it. You mentioned earlier that Charles Stepney’s music has a spiritual bearing in the other thread, the second person I immediately thought of was Alice Coltrane nod
