People forget Rick Springfield between 1981-85 was pretty untouchable, had 16 top 40 singles, one came in 1988, and also 4 straight multi platinum albums. Rick was so big he charted A B-side in 1984.

interestingly,Rick released a movie in 1984....a few months before Purple Rain came out.

His movie,Hard To Hold was a total flop, while Purple Rain was a massive success.

That was strange to me,since Rick actually had some acting experience (he was on the soap "General Hospital" for awhile).

Here's the Dutch Charts' Top 17 of the 1980s for comparison:

17. '19', Paul Hardcastle

16. 'When the Rain Begins To Fall', Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora

15. 'Into the Groove', Madonna

14. 'When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going', Billy Ocean

13. 'Purple Rain', Prince

12. 'Don't Leave Me This Way', The Communards

11. 'Nightshift', The Commodores

10. 'Lambada', Kaoma

9. 'Someone Loves You, Honey', June Lodge & Prince Mohammed

8. 'De vogeltjesdans', De Electronica's (Dutch version of 'The Chicken Dance'/'Birdie Song')

7. 'Dancing in the Dark', Bruce Springsteen

6. 'Eternal Flame', The Bangles

5. 'We Are The World', USA For Africa

4. 'I Just Called To Say I Love You', Stevie Wonder

3. 'How 'Bout Us?', Champaign

2. 'Nikita', Elton John

1. '(I've Had) The Time of My Life', Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

.

The absence of MJ was surprising to me, even more surprising to learn that apparently his highest charting single on the list is 'One Day In Your Life', at #107 (!). 'Smooth Criminal' is #116, 'Beat It' #125, I Just Can't Stop Loving You' #163, and 'Billy Jean' #234.

It’s interesting how much different this chart is from the US chart
