there's an old docu from around 89, about the minneapolis music scene which only spent maybe 1/4 of it's time on the whole Prince/time/vanity etc.., retinue, and in it, Jam replies "it's a prince sound" that simple from the horses mouth. sure, they were great, did a lot of other things but at heart, the beginning for them was that "prince sound".

i didn't listen to everything they did but alexander's "fake" was definitely prince sounding. that one song they did for, who was it? mc5 or something, tender love, was a great ballad. talented dudes no argument there. I sent them my cd, they rejected me but i never held it against them, i was only carrying the minneapolis sound, not many people did.

I'm only repeating on what happened and what Prince felt & the reason he fired them. Of course Human League,Alexander O’Neal,New Edition, Johnny Gill, Kylmaxx,Force MD's etc. didn't sound like Prince.

IMHO you both are right. I think they may have started out that way, but they really did developed their own thing over the years. They have such a diverse group of artist that they worked with and the sounds/songs IMO do not all have that same sound/vibe.

Don't know why, but I was wondering the same thing. I don't know if this was before or after I saw the Whitney movie and some comment was made about a teen star whose records were quickly moving up the charts; and hearing Whitney's mom call Janet a #it&h, got me to wondering about how the 80s stars felt about one another. It's obvious that other musicians and entertainers admired Prince, and vice versa, but not much these two.

Possibly during Nasty (which would make sense too) IDK the energy was crazy and I was slightly buzzed but JJ left the stage for a moment and a dancer was in one of the boxes on the right side of the stage when suddenly the riff changed quickly before returning to the tune.
