Wow, he was only 67. I sometimes forget these two were in their early twenties making very mature and complex music.RIP

1 half of 1 of the great songwriting teams of the 20th century. from what I can tell, much of the Dan's wry, acerbic perspective came from Walter. somehow, I associate Walter with "Deacon Blues" more than I do Donald..

.

in any event: his contribution to Steely Dan - and to popular music - will remain forever.

.

"Aja" album now on my laptop & flowing through my speakers..

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Same here--Steely Dan was one of my favorites back in the day. I'm saddened by the news. Thanks for the music, Walter.

They were just some oddball looking guys that, in another decade, might have created a computer company instead of been musicians. But they made some of the most wonderful music in their field. I was late to the Steely Dan party, but it's been great learning their music over the years since.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

- Yes! And, since Donald said he would continue Walter´s legacy, let´s hope that Steely Dan continues with Larry. He is so great. His solo on ´kid Charlemagne´ is amazing

- He posted a message at Steely Dan´s Facebook page saying that he will keep the legacy alive as long as he can.

I always thought that Fagen was the main songwriter, and maybe he is, but he said in an interview that he and Walter did everything together. I saw a comment on Youtube saying Walter was Fagen´s muse, and it makes sense to me.

The Message from Donald Fagen
'Walter Becker was my friend, my writing partner and my bandmate since we met as students at Bard College in 1967. We started writing nutty little tunes on an upright piano in a small sitting room in the lobby of Ward Manor, a mouldering old mansion on the Hudson River that the college used as a dorm. We liked a lot of the same things: jazz (from the twenties through the mid-sixties), W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, science fiction, Nabokov, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Berger, and Robert Altman films come to mind. Also soul music and Chicago blues. Walter had a very rough childhood – I’ll spare you the details. Luckily, he was smart as a whip, an excellent guitarist and a great songwriter. He was cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically funny. Like a lot of kids from fractured families, he had the knack of creative mimicry, reading people’s hidden psychology and transforming what he saw into bubbly, incisive art. He used to write letters (never meant to be sent) in my wife Libby’s singular voice that made the three of us collapse with laughter. His habits got the best of him by the end of the seventies, and we lost touch for a while. In the eighties, when I was putting together the NY Rock and Soul Review with Libby, we hooked up again, revived the Steely Dan concept and developed another terrific band. I intend to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band.'

cry Man, i really don't know what to say. Steely Dan are one of the best groups of the last 40, 50 years. And in my opinion, Walter Becker was one of the best guitarists, bassists, songwriters and composers of that same time period. Steely Dan is in my top 5 of band, so I'm hella bummed... Big time. sad

Life is so very short...

Rest In Peace, Walter. rose

hardwork

There are VERY few things in the world quite as magical as a childhood spent in 1970s America. Thank you Walter Becker.
