Nah, not just Marvin. Damn near all chitlin circuit performers were ad-libing. That's all it is. Mike watched them all when the J5 open up for them from the Regal to the Apollo.

y'all are going off topic. Just looking for 1st recorded appearance of it. So far, people are saying "Blame it on the boogie?"

Maybe it was the 12" version of You Can't Win, in which part of it was later retitled Can't Get Out Of The Rain.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

All it saying is I believe Marvin is a huge vocal influence on the way MJ approached it. His timing, cadence and ad libs. One night I was up listening to some post-Destiny jams. I kept trying to call "where have I heard these kind of sounds before", then it hit me. Marvin Gaye like a mofo.

J5 songs. I gotta go thru them again. Maybe Get It Together, one of those later tunes.
