Meh it's okay. It's certainly not the worst thing I've heard from Mariah recently.

I expected worst based on the reviews here. lol

This sounds like Ciara and trap rap meets Mariah.

Who the hell is YG? lol

I'd would like to see the reaction from Lionel Richie's fans on their tour

to this song.

Yeah, I kinda agree with you. Do we now start judging artist/ Ms. Carey music on a new scale... we've heard worst. lol

Let's check back a year later. And see how funny this statement was. In another life I must have been in A&R because if i was getting paid for my picks in music I'd be a rich bitch.
wink

.
whew So what was her last hit song anyway We Belong Together? That was a strong tune.

I don't even follow. I just love music. When I hear something new, if I like it. I wow turn this up, and people around me wrinkle, their noses and stick them in the air and away "do you know who that is!!!!"

I dig stuff recently from Justin Bieber, 21 Pilots, Rihanna (love her old school doo wop one) and many many more, love good new music in general. And guess what, those new tracks have all went to the top 10.
I've learned never to judge music on the artist or their reputation, especially today when it's all done by a few talented people behind the scenes.

There are not very many people like Prince who did everything by themselves left.

What she/her handlers need to ralize is that she needs to go back to that Vision Of Love material. When she left Motolla she went all gung ho with being down, having a rapper all over her music, an in videos. She needs to go back to that Milquetoast, Whitney style material.

The ingenue whos an around the way girl shit is played. Get some anthems like Adele again.

When she first incorporated hip hop, it was interesting because it was a change for her. But I think it has gotten repetitive now.

I do think she genuinely does enjoy hip hop and that's why she went in that direction, but it's time for a change now.

I don't think going back to the big ballad thing is the answer though. She doesn't have the voice to carry off those type of songs anymore.

Is hip hop or big ballads the only choices? She has done some house remixes. How about a dance influenced album? It would be something different for her, not trying to go back and be what she was when she first started which never works.

People just expect too much from Mariah. She is not a musician and her lack of creating different music and sounds or anything show that she does not have people that are willing to tell her otherwise. I was recently listening to Haley Reinharts "indie" label album "Better" and she is someone who idolizes Mariah and to me has one of the strongest female voices out there now, and hearing this record I almost want Mariah to listen and learn from it but its not going to happen. The use of live instruments and things like that are not in Mariahs world.

I agree that people are overly harsh on her and many other superstars (especilly aging female ones). Nevertheless, I think your post illustrates how limited her talent is outside of her exceptional ability to sing. If you don't have creative musical abilities nor the musical judgment to chose someone who can help you be creative, then you don't have much other than a great voice. Too bad she has even gotten away from highlighting it.

I agree,it's just not a good song.Mariah has done hip-hop beats for too long, now. She needs to get back to basics and come up with something great like "Can't Let Go" and "Always Be My Baby"...real songs that actually had melodies and no hip-hop nonsense.

Funny thing is, Mariah collaborated with Jermaine Dupri on this, and they made "Always Be My Baby" together. Where is Manuel Seal? I think there is something missing from that formula.

Yeah they are, but they usually show up on non single tracks...which is why i still listen to her. Her albums tracks are always stronger than the singles it seems. Her continuing work with Jim Wright is just timeless and looks like there will be more.

I agree Jim Wright is by far the best producer she's worked with since leaving Sony. Too bad he can't produce an entire album on her. She probably won't allow it. She probably thinks he will make her sound like an old lady, the same thing she accused Tommy of doing. lol

God some people are stuck in a place and time. A rut.

But I can imagine a jazzy band playing a cool instrumental version of it. It's so melodious and perfect for a horns and a live bass.

Heck I close my eyes shaking my head listening to it ignoring sexy video. Usually that's I liked about Mariah. Watching her sexy videos. That the music mesmerizing me more than the track, means she crossed over to a differ audience. Which is cool.

I agree. She usually only saves about 4 tracks on an album with him sad . It's annoying. He is by far her best producer she had worked with outside of Walter and Dupri. Too bad Walter was messy. She also worked with Poyser a couple of times and should stretch that relationship too.

Mariah doesn't play an instrument, but I think she does write melodies and does contribute to the songwriting. I think people always underestimate the contribution

of female artists to their own music. There are plenty of male artists who play instruments but tend to always do the same type of songs and records over and over again as well.

I think this focus on "real" instruments is misplaced. There is this idea that real instruments is always good and electronic music is always bad. That is not the case. You can write a good or a bad song using either, they are just tools. Electronic music has been a big part of music since the late 70's and early 80's. Many many innovative artists have used electronics and not "real" instruments whatever that means.

I think a lot of veteran artists stick with familiar sounds. I think they are worried if they change too much their fans will reject them and say they have abandoned what made them fans in the first place. Or they worry they will look ridiculous if they try to do a totally different genre of music that isn't them and they will look fake and phony. So basically they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they do the same thing, people complain. If they change too much, people don't like that either.

You have to find a happy medium between something a little different and fresh, but still being true to yourself which is hard sometimes.

That's why I suggested a house or a dance sound with maybe a few electronic ballads. I think it's something different for her, but still believable as Mariah that her fans would embrace.

She knows and is aware especially from her show. She said "I think my fans like my more honest and real and more emotional songs like my ballads compared to the other stuff.." or something to that effect. She is aware but still panders to the same output for the last 15 years for singles. I have faith she will break out of that mindset.

LOVE. A nice, mellow, contemporary-sounding joint. The video breaks no new ground and that birdflippin' in the middle only serves in making her look generic and common. Mimi can do MUCH BETTER than that. Otherwise, she's STILL gorgeous and I hope she comes back Platinum again. smile

PROS:

Mariah's body.

CONS:

The song, the rap, the beat, the writing, the production. Seriously if you would NOT have said new single, no one would have even been able to tell this was not from the last 6 or 7 albums she has done. Everything about this song is bad sorry, love you Mariah but you have long since been musically interesting.

I know, I feel the same way. It doesn't make sense. The first time I ever heard the phrase, it was a friend of mine who told me that Justin Timberlake had dropped his new album. My first thought was "did he break it?". Then I thought it meant that it was cancelled. Strange use of language...
