Jackie Wilson APPRECIATION THREAD I feel like this guy's influence on SO MANY performers over the decade isn't being acknowledged!
He's hands down the most criminally underrated performer of all time.
Now I know him and Elvis were peers at the time, people say Elvis was inspired by many of his moves, which is obvious... but Jackie just had SO MUCH soul!
People usually remember Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck, James Brown from that era, but the likes of Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson are rarely mentioned.
And that vocal range he had

Jackie was a superb talent and him and Sam definitely deserve their due. Sam Cooke on the Harlem square club live record really lets loose and he cements himself as a true soul singer on that record. Sam of course has the gospel background with The Soul stirrers and IIRC he was a member of the Highway QCs too unless I'm getting mixed up.
Jackie of course influenced Mike and MJ paid for Jackie Wilson to have a proper burial as unbelievably and sadly Jackie Wilson was buried in a paupers grave. A guy of his talent being treated that way is just...wow. But MJ always had major props for doing that for Jackie to me. I believe it's mentioned in either the bio about Jackie or in one of the Mike biographies. The records Jackie made later in his career are more soul music too like Higher and Higher and IIRC he recorded a version of Love Uprising. But really Sam, Jackie, Linda Jones and the other true unsung early soul singers they deserve major props for paving the way. Linda especially is very underrated. She's only really known for Hypnotized. Edit also forgot to mention if I'm correct Elvis was a fan of Jackies and they were friends. Sam Cooke is always mentioned, always. Jackie not so much, because lets face it a lot of his music was cookie cutter. He was a great stage performer and possibly the best voice of his era. He had some great songs don't get me wrong but compared to his contemporaries his disography was lacking. PRINCE: Always and Forever

the fact that Sam Cooke was murdered under shady circumstances also gives strength to his ongoing legend... and in the 60's and 70's, artists like michael jackson and al green and stevie wonder and donny hathaway always mentioned Jackie Wilson as an influence, but over time, the general public does seem to have somewhat forgotten jackie wilson's contributions |

I listen to both guys and have both in my collection. Wilson was a course an influence and a great not denying that. Wilson is somewhat like the guy he replace in Billy Ward and the Dominos. There music was very pop oriented even though they were straight up rhythm and blues singrs. PRINCE: Always and Forever

that was what she wrote in her book that he tried to rape her but she screamed. there is also a woman who claims to be a child of the rape of another woman. Jackie isn't alone, lots of men have issues with women, especially in those days. | |

He became a drunk/drug addict I believe because the mob had control over him and the womanizing and illegitimate children were a by product of that industry. | |

He was a great talent! Great performer and singer! He never gets his proper credit for the multiple generation of entertainers he influenced INCLUDING his biggest fan Elvis Presley. | |
