Not that I can remember. I don't know a songle person who considered Eddy a "rock star."

Without getting too far into the weeds.

I'd Google "eddie murphy rock star".

Then I'd re-assess the above.

So would you consider the likes of Sly Stone, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Rick James Rock Stars?

Long Live Rock!!
Unfortunately there are no Great Rock and Rollers left.. as you see 2016 swiped too many away from us..
Springsteen is still fairly young and I would give him the reigning title , as their dropping like flys and it's only going to get worse.

People referred to Eddie as a rock star well before then.

The closest person to a quintessential modern day rock star is Kanye from his music to his antics to his popularity and his infamy.

Even then, one can argue he doesn't count as quote-on-quote "modern star" since he's been making music since the 90s and has been a well-known mainstream act since the early-mid 2000s. He's still in the upper echelon of star power today but his mainstream career has spanned over 10 years.

I still consider him to be a modern day rockstar though he certainly isn't a brand new star.

No one knew who Kanye was (unless you read the few rap album credits he produced) until like 2003. He didn't really become super popular until a few years ago.

The general public didn't know who Kanye was till he released The College Dropout in 2004 but he didn't really hit the mainstream at large until 2007. He's been hot ever since but with the whole Taylor Swift incident in 2009, he's been making headlines for everything but his music and things only got worse when he got with Kim, his music specifically.

He's more infamous now than anything.

Kanye West is not a ROCK star.

Not in terms of music but he is most certainly one in terms of what rock as a culture represents.

I almost wanted to say Kanye. He is definitely more rock n roll than even most rock musicians today.

Oh I'm not saying he's nor. But, you might as well add Mick Jagger and Chuck Berry if we're naming guys who hit their commercial peak decades ago.

Uhm, yes, you have to. Axl Rose is certainly a pick. Is he relevant today? Probably not. But he is fronting two of the biggest rockband around and throughout his career he did whatever he wanted, the way he wanted and he's still around playing stadiums. But of course, if you mean a rock star, who is actually from today, I'm afraid there is none.

If we're talking about how well a band does internationally, I've seen posters announcing a Guns 'N Roses concert in La Paz, Bolivia. So this band is surely famous in the world.

Oh yeah for sure, I was saying they are not off today. Artist who've been around 30 plus years shouldn't even be up for discussion.

Of the aforementioned Sly Stone achieved that status, but as of today, with the death of Prince and Bowie,I think Axle Rose, Bon Jovie, Springsteen are the only true remaining left.
