Dancing With The Stars season 23

Vanilla Ice

I'm watching the show now and Bobby Brown is in the audience and so is David Foster & Daryl Simmons. I guess they're here for Babyface. Toni Braxton was in the rehersal clip right before Babyface did his tango.

Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds: 'Marcia Brady knows me'

Curt Cavin, 8:39 p.m. EDT September 18, 2016

Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds counts Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Whitney Houston and Eric Clapton among the musical artists he has worked with or written songs for in his Grammy-winning, Los Angeles-based career.

But once a Hoosier always a Hoosier, and this Indianapolis native admittedly remains susceptible to being star-struck.

The recent example occurred earlier this month when ABC gathered "Dancing With the Stars" contestants for Season 23’s first meeting. The usually reserved Edmonds caught himself making an introduction.

“I walked in the room and said, ‘There’s Marcia Brady!’ ” he told IndyStar.

He laughed.

“I know, she’s Maureen (McCormick), but I had to call her ‘Marcia’ because as every kid did, I had a crush on Marcia Brady. To actually see her and then for her to be a fan of mine, I don’t know if I can do better than that this year.

“I mean, c’mon, it’s Marcia Brady, and now I can say ‘Marcia Brady knows me!’ ”

That Edmonds was even in the room with the former Brady Bunch star was noteworthy. He is not the typical musical superstar; he’s known more for ducking the limelight than standing in it.

By his own admission, his commitments to events are typically followed by withdrawals. Over the years, Edmonds has accompanied friends to the "DWTS" set but would have never considered accepting an invitation to participate.

“I remember walking down that backstage hallway, feeling nervous for (those) dancing and thinking, ‘Oh, my god, this is crazy. I’d never do that,’ ” he said.

Do that he certainly is, and he has his mother’s death to thank for it.

Edmonds and his five brothers grew up on Indianapolis’ north side, fatherless after lung cancer took Marvin Edmonds’ life. Barbara, their mother, became his everything.

“She traveled around the world with me, got to see so many great things, and she was proud of everything from the Grammys to the American Music Awards to seeing me on stage performing,” he said. “I constantly made her proud of things she never saw coming.”

Three years ago, Barbara died, leaving Edmonds with a void he couldn’t fill alone. It was then, with three of his own children still being raised, that he decided to become the leader his mother had been. Dancing on this show is the latest step to stepping out.

“Most of my life I’ve taken the safe route and only done things I’m comfortable with,” Edmonds said. “I was always like, ‘Why put myself out there?’

“Most of my friends know I’m not a dancer. I might be able to shake a leg or two, but I’m not a dancer, so this is really, really going way out of the comfort zone.”

He paused.

“But my mother would be proud — she would,” he said. “After she died, I made a promise to myself to keep doing things that would make her proud.”

Edmonds did himself proud in last week’s season debut, fox-trotting to a score of 26 (out of 40) with professional partner Allison Holker. Their performance tied for fifth; Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe, an Indianapolis resident, and his partner, Sharna Burgess, were co-leaders at 31.

When the dance ended, Edmonds thought only of his mother.

“I’m 58 years old and taking on something brand new, something that I couldn’t have imagined doing, pushing my brain, remembering the moves, enduring the whole stress of it all,” he said. “I’m challenging myself in a new way.

“It’s great for my kids to see me looking for new things in life, and it’s great for people my age to know, ‘Look, you can start (living) at any point.' We all have a lot more life ahead of us. People are living longer, so keep living.”

Edmonds’ next step comes Monday night with an Argentine tango, which he describes as “sexy and smooth and athletic, all at the same time.” He cringes.

This is the man who quit intramural wrestling at Westlane Middle School to focus on music, someone whose adult athletic resume comprises only of shooting “a little basketball once in a while.” He works out, sure, but gliding over a dance floor has not been in his repertoire.

“My body is sore, my feet are sore — I’m feeling pains I haven’t felt before, but I like it,” he said. “It’s work, so I’m good for that.”

Contestants who advance on "DWTS" are usually the ones adept at entertainment and show improvement. Edmonds believes he can do both with time.

“If you’re in front of your own show and it’s not going well, all right, I’ll go to the tools I have to pick (the audience) up,” he said. “In this case, I have no tools to go to because I don’t have the tools to start with.

“But one thing that is common is the entertainment. I was very nervous last week right up until the moment the curtain went up.”

He knew is mother was watching. Marcia Brady, too.

“Fortunately, we had practiced (the routine) enough times the muscle memory kicked in and those parts I couldn’t remember came through, so I was able to enjoy the experience rather than be horrified by it,” he said.

You must have not watched the videos, because he said he did it for his mother. I don't think everybody who does this show is doing it for money, especially since it's not easy at all learn ballroom dancing in a short period of time. They usually practice around 6 hours a day, so it's hard for people not really in shape.
