I've learned to loved The Smiths, over the years, and for a while I was prepared to indulge the idea that Morrissey was just a fragile, wounded soul in a harsh world, or that he had some kind of 'punk' sensibility where he was poking at the bounds of bourgeois liberal morality - reminding us about the National Front Discos and the like, out there beyond the cheery world of breakfast tv sofas, and even giving voice to the misdirected resentments of the lost souls at them. I've come to realise, though, that that's to give him far too much credit, and that he's essentially just a bitter old self-regarding prick.

Great songwriter and frontman in his day, though.

If it walks like a brooding duck, and quacks like a brooding duck, then well . . .

He wouldn't be be the first notable artist to show a racist side.

At least I know where he's coming from.
