Mel & Kim ~ Respectable

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Now I have figured out how to actually post videos here nuts F.L.M by Mel & Kim. Also they came on the scene a year before Kylie Minogue who also Stock, Aiken and Waterman who wrote and produced Mel & Kim's debut album. So their music sounded fresh before everyone and their momma started to work with them.....if u know what I mean.

Oh God, Stock, Aitken and Muthafuckingwaterman. The most hated producer team of the 1980s! But it sold like fucking hotcakes.... Oh, those muthafucking 1980s... If anybody here ever wonders why I'm such a screwed up idiot making freaky posts, it's because I grew up when these moneymaking fuckers were all the rage. They knew something. They knew people don't think. People just want some mindless tune that they can dance to. Human beings really aren't that much more advanced than the average chimpanzee. Stock, Aitken and Whatsisname realized that. Prince didn't or didn't want to. He was about the music. Artistic growth and personal freedom. That's why he did what he did. And it is why never was the biggest selling arist of the 1980s. But it's also why we love him. yes

I didn't mind their work with Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round biggrin

or Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up...now that man could really sing nod

or Bananrama's Venus biggrin

or Kylie Minogue's Step Back In Time biggrin

But after the 90s and everyone and their momma was working with them (even Latoya Jackson bored2) their music became cookie cutter Blandapalooza. sad Now back to Mel & Kim lol nuts

Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up

I used to play a song by Samantha Fox a lot called I Only Wanna Be With You as I had it on a videotape compilation of her music videos. I think it was by SAW but the video might have been a remix, so it could have been someone else. Speaking of Rick

^Oh yeah, that was them. They were all over the place in the late 80s. Never Gonna Give You Up was the biggest selling single in Holland in 1987. Sorry for my little rant , but damn, took my 20+ years to forget them and now those tunes are back in my head. pout

Sam Fox was known mainly for her tits, by the way, just like an Italian singer called Sabrina who became a one hit wonder in the summer of 87 with a tune called Boys (Summertime Love). Yeah, that's the kinda thing a teenage boy remembers. wink

The main reason why I'm one of few music fans that will never hate on Mike Stock/Matt Aitken/Pete Waterman or PWL in general is because I remember that they actually were soulful and funky when they were really focus.

Samantha had a few hits in the USA. Probably the most known ones are Touch Me and the songs produced by Full Force. S-S-S-S-Samantha Fox. She's on the newest album Full Force put out about a year ago.

I checked the tracklist and noticed that Showing Out and Respectable were on there twice and the other songs I hadn't even heared about, so I guess you're right. On a related (and sadder) note, didn't one of them die from cancer at a young age?

Mel died on 18 Jan 1990 from Pneumonia aged 23, after contracting a cold, her immune system weakened by chemotherapy. She was diagnosed with secondary cancer of the spine in 1988, after previously being treated for liver cancer when she was 18, prior to the duo’s rise to fame. sad

Pete Waterman was a Northern Soul DJ before being a writer/producer. The song respectable is all about SAW hitting back at their critics. They had their sound and yea it could be cheesy at times but it paid dividends. This time I know it's for real by Donna Summer is IMO the best SAW produced and written track. Also agree Mel and Kim could have been bigger stars. Very sad that Mel passed away so young.

Awwww yes, I remember this song! smile That sound effect was a cool thing "tay tay tay tay"... smile - does anyone remember Ferris Bueller pressing on his keyboard to simulate a cough? smile Wasn't that the same Sound Tech or whatever...?

Fascinated me to some extent then, probably should have got into it deeper.....

I'm no expert on the subject, but I've heard this pitch scaling effect in lots of '80s synthpop songs. Funnily enough, I can't think of a good example. The only song that comes to mind is 'We Just' by Italo-disco group Moses, but that was only a hit here in Holland and not in the States, apparently.

Can't stand most of SAW, but I do love this song. The "tay tay" bit just makes it LOL.
