Reissue Talk XXIV (24)

R.E.M. are to reissue three early albums on vinyl in July…

The albums in question are B-sides/rarities compilation Dead Letter Office, the last studio album issued on I.R.S. Records, Lifes Rich Pageant and the ‘greatest hits’ I.R.S. put out just before the band released Green for Warners, Eponymous.

The albums will maintain original artwork and will be issued via Capitol Records/Universal Music Enterprises on 29 July 2016

Back in print and available to pre-order for a July 1st release is the original 1987 WENDY & LISA album containing the singles ‘Waterfall’, ‘Sideshow’ and ‘Honeymoon Express’!

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman brought their esoteric funk leanings to Prince & The Revolution through their purple reign in the early 80s, and split to pursue their own maverick musical path in 1986.

And the pioneering hits just kept on coming with "Long Tall Sally," "Rip It Up," "Ready Teddy," "Lucille," "Send Me Some Lovin'," "Good Golly Miss Molly," "Jenny Jenny" and "Keep A-Knockin'.

This deluxe 5LP slipcase box set includes the entire output of studio albums recorded by Little Richard for the Specialty and Vee-Jay labels, each in their original mono mixes. The essential recordings represented here are: Here's Little Richard (1957), Little Richard (1958), The Fabulous Little Richard (1959), Little Richard Is Back (1964) and His Greatest Hits (1965). The Hangman’s Blues: Prison Songs In Country Music (1956-1972)
release: August 5, 2016

Limited Edition Deluxe Gatefold LP with exclusive scholarly liner notes by Alvin Lucia!
Full dynamic range 2016 remasters direct from the first generation analogue master tapes!

From the people who brought you ‘Hillbillies In Hell’… Grim tales of jailbirds, cutthroats, cuckolds, executioners, murderers and popcorn-dusted escapees. Prison ballads form part of the historic lifeblood of Country music and saw a distinct resurgence after the May 1960 execution of controversial convict Caryl Chessman.

Here Iron Mountain Analog Research presents 16 of the very best, many seldom heard since their original release (often on obscure, microscopic or private-press labels). Running the gamut from smooth balladeers of woe to ramshackle and plaintive backyard rockabillies, The Hangman’s Blues features fevered declarations of innocence, profound diatribes on capital punishment and mournful odes to that Last Mile.

Years in the making – The Hangman’s Blues will chill, thrill and bedevil the dreams of all who hear it. Originally issued on forgotten 45s, some of these sides are indescribably rare and are reissued here for the very first time. All in one handy LP package.

Freddie Hart - The Wall
Jim Carter - Jailer Jailer
Lonesome Johnny - Death Row
Jaycee Hill - Crash Out
Bill Carter with The Cooper Brothers - Jailer Man
Dee Mullins - Prison Grey
Country Johnny Mathis - Caryl Chessman
Ronnie Hawkins - The Ballad Of Caryl Chessman
Marty Robbins - The Chair
Stonewall Jackson - Run
Jimmy Minor - Death Row
Al Dean - Hangman
Bobby Sykes - The Guard On The North Wall
Hoyle Miller - Twelve Years On Death Row
Jimmy Van - The Ballad Of Caryl Chessman
Porter Wagoner - (I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle

Brook Benton: Rainy Night in Georgia—The Complete Reprise & Cotillion Singles A’s & B’s (2-CD Set)
Release - July 1, 2016

He’s one of the all-time great soul balladeers, with 58 pop and 38 R&B hits to his credit, and his beautiful baritone is one of the most recognizable voices in all of pop and soul music, but Brook Benton has never had any kind of collection devoted to his last great body of work, the Jimmy Bowen-produced sides he recorded for Reprise and the Arif Mardin-produced material he recorded for Cotillion during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Now, in true Real Gone fashion, we’ve put together a two-CD package that includes the A and B-side of every single side Benton recorded for the two labels, all but one (see below) in their original mono single mixes and, after an exhaustive vault search, all but three from original tape sources. These 31 sides display a staggering stylistic versatility ranging from R&B takes on pop standards like “My Way” (yes, that song can be funky, and it’s here in a rare stereo single mix!), “I Gotta Be Me,” and “The Glory of Love,” to gospel songs like “If You Think God Is Dead,” topical tunes like “Heaven Help Us All” and “A Black Child Can’t Smile,” and, of course, some Southern-dipped soul like the #1 R&B hit “Rainy Night in Georgia” and the seven single sides he recorded with the Dixie Flyers, including the hits “Shoes” and “Don’t It Make You Want to Go Home.” Remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision and annotated by Gene Sculatti, Rainy Night in Georgia—The Complete Reprise & Cotillion Singles A’s & B’s is a major soul find and deserves a place on the shelf right next to Brook’s classic Mercury material.

Warners have pushed back some of the Prince vinyl reissues scheduled for this year, with one album disappearing from listings altogether…

Parade is now currently slated for a 26 August release, about a month after Around The World In A Day (originally mis-priced in the UK) is due to be reissued on vinyl. Sign ‘O’ The Times should also be out in August (23rd), although to be honest all of these dates should regarded as provisional. Lovesexy, Graffiti Bridge, Batman and the ‘Symbol’ album, in theory, will be out before the end of the year on vinyl.

Disappointingly, The Black Album is no longer listed for reissue on vinyl and retailers including Amazon have cancelled pre-orders for this title.

Amazon in the USA are still listing cassette reissues of Purple Rain, Dirty Mind and Controversy although these aren’t to be found on any other sites.

Curiously, Warner Bros. Records have made no official mention of any of these vinyl reissues. They have simply appeared without comment or fanfare.
