Interesting article on the success of Huey Lewis and the News in 1984 http://www.avclub.com/art...rtsi-56121
In retrospect, it's an unsung accomplishment how in a year as stacked as 1984 with a record low of only 5 #1 charting albums by year's end, Sports is one of them. The fact that such a comparatively mortal, down to earth group like HL&tN took on blockbuster names in the form of not only the 3 #1 acts of the year in Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Prince but the slew of other superstars at the time and managed to put a point on the board and become blockbuster names themselves is an incredible feat. All I know is that I heard The Heart Of Rock n Roll, Heaven by Bryan Adams, and No Stoppin' Us by Ollie & Jerry constantly that summer. What's Love Got To Do With It and Sister Christian too. I remember the Solid Gold dancers dancing to this songs. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. "The Heart of Rock and Roll" is what forced Sports to the top of the charts that summer. Perfect timing as the Footloose soundtrack began to cool off then. | |
