Jodeci - Forever My Lady: 25th Anniversary

On this day in 1991, K-Ci & JoJo Hailey and DeVante Swing & Mr Dalvin (DeGrate) collectively known as Jodeci released their debut smash hit album, "Forever My Lady". Come share your thoughts and memories about the album and the group. Congrats to Jodeci.

After buying "Diamonds & Pearls" on cassette (it wasn't available on CD for some reason where I lived), I drove to the nearest big city to buy it on CD. While at Tower Records, I looked at Billboard Magazine and saw Al B Sure & Kyle West's writing credits on both the Jodeci record and something called FS Effect (I think that was their name.) I bought both CDs (and D&P) and Naughty By Nature. I still have that copy of Forever My Lady, while D&P is the only other CD that survived that string of purchases. I bought other things -- I just don't recall what they were.

I really liked them back then.

I didn´t like how JoJo treated Mary J Blige ( he´s the one who was with her , right ? Not K-Ci?) and I think they could have had a much longer career but they all had a big ego and couldn´t deal with the fame (drugs, booze and all the temptations that come with fame and money).

I liked their remix of Freekn You that they did with Ghostface Killah and Raekwon.

But, in hindsight, that was the beginning of the end of RnB....slow music with some added rap verses that don´t make much sense and don´t add much to the song.

But yeah, back then I liked it quite a lot.

By the way , Devante Swing almost ended up recording for Paisley Park. He travelled to Minneapolis, went to Paisley Park and I think he was turned down or changed his mind because he saw that Prince was the only person making some money, not the proteges.

Last time I heard of Jodeci was when K-Ci and Jojo were touring in some lowclass, small clubs in Europe.

They looked a hot mess.

What are they up to these days?

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Wasn't Kci with Mary?. I think Keith and Teddy started New Jack Swing with I Want Her, but this is still a NJS album too. Freekin U is on their sophomore album along with Good Luv which is then singing a capella with a guitar. In fact that's probably one of my favorite Jodeci songs. I also like Kci and JoJo and have most of their discography apart from their latest and the Japanese only release.

Naw, it was K-Ci who dated Mary J. Blige.

To answer your last question, about a little over a year ago, Jodeci released their 4th album. They so-called performed on the BET Awards last summer, but it was very confusing. They lip synced through most of the performance I believe. From the one video I did see of the initial single, it was a really good song and video, but the rest of the album sounded lack luster. I think K-Ci and Jo-Jo are back to touring as a duo again and so far I haven't heard anything negative. The live footage that I saw from last summer sounded like K-Ci still has the pipes, Jo-Jo's voice is sort of weak.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Wow, can't believe that it's been 25 years. I really loved Jodeci's first 3 albums. K-Ci's voice was an extreme powerhouse. I had serious crushes on both him and Dalvin. nod

According to one of his associates, DeVante Swing has decided the solo route is the way for him. Now he's calling himself simply DeVante.

What kind of solo route? lol DeVante is great at being a musician and producing, but singing....hmmm

Maybe he will return to writing for and producing other artists. I bet dude has been stockpiling songs since the '90s.
