Sacha Baron Cohen goes on another Hollywood 'wild ride'

Sacha Baron Cohen goes on another Hollywood 'wild ride'

For the sake of comedy, Sacha Baron Cohen has risked arrest, lawsuits and grave bodily harm, but sitting down for an interview somehow seems more daunting.

It's one thing to go out into the world and stir up trouble in the guise of outrageous characters like the moronic hip-hop poser Ali G or the bigoted Kazakh TV reporter Borat. It's another thing entirely to do it as himself.

"I don't think I've done a print interview for a decade — I might really end up regretting it," Baron Cohen said on a recent morning in the Los Angeles production offices of his upcoming action-comedy "The Brothers Grimsby." He smiled wryly. "Can I get you anything? A bottle of water? I've got to appear down to earth."

He needn't worry — though he's responsible for some of the most daring high-wire comedy in recent memory, from the HBO series "Da Ali G Show" to films like "Borat" and "Brüno," Baron Cohen, 44, comes across in person as affable and surprisingly normal. To protect his privacy and maintain the integrity of his characters, though, he has avoided revealing too much of himself in public over the years.

"To keep some anonymity has been challenging, but I love the idea that my characters are more famous than I am," he said.

'Alice Through the Looking Glass' trailer

Still, the beast of celebrity occasionally needs to be fed so, with two new movies coming out in the next five months, Baron Cohen is doing his best to oblige. In "The Brothers Grimsby," which opens March 11, he plays the buffoonish but kind-hearted estranged brother of a James Bond-like government assassin (Mark Strong). In the big-budget sequel "Alice Through the Looking Glass," in theaters May 27, he portrays Time, a kind of half-clock, half-human villain who can travel into the past or the future. Aside from a cameo in "Anchorman 2," they're his first films to hit theaters since 2012 — hence a reintroduction seems in order.

Baron Cohen's two sides

Ever since he burst to fame in late 1990s, Baron Cohen's career has moved along on parallel tracks. On one track are projects he has developed as vehicles for his particular brand of brazen, button-pushing satire. These have often involved inserting characters into cringe-inducing, sometimes perilous real-life situations: camping out with homophobic hunters as the flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista Brüno, for example, or crashing the red carpet at the Oscars as the Kadafi-like despot he played in the comedy "The Dictator." On the other, somewhat more conventional track are films —– including "Talladega Nights," "Hugo" and now "Alice Through the Looking Glass" — in which he has appeared as an actor for hire.

'The Dictator'

The latter come with less pressure and a far lower chance of suddenly needing to run from the police. But the former — "The Brothers Grimsby," which Baron Cohen co-wrote and produced, being the latest — is clearly where his heart lies. "Doing other people's films is like having a holiday for me," he said.

Whichever type of project he's working on, Baron Cohen deeply immerses himself in the role he's playing. On "The Brothers Grimsby," he stayed in character from the start of rehearsals until the end of the shoot. "He will speak in the accent, walk the walk and will only answer to his character's name, Nobby," said the film's director, Louis Leterrier. "Yet he keeps his wits and smarts very sharp. He's wickedly precise about the laughs."

In prepping for a part, Baron Cohen likes to go undercover like a CIA operative to conduct research. While developing his "Brothers Grimsby" character, a die-hard soccer fan, Baron Cohen staged faux interviews in character with athletes and others who at least initially had no idea they were talking to an actor creating a role.

"We'd hire a hotel room in Los Angeles and, as Nobby, I'd interview a bunch of people one-on-one — generally people who were involved in professional sports but weren't well known," said Baron Cohen, who grew up in a London suburb and now lives in L.A. with his wife, actress Isla Fisher, and their three children. "I'd be offering them cocaine or seeing if I could borrow their car. The idea is to make sure the character has some of the subtlety and reality of a well-developed character." He laughed. "It's a mad process. I should really be more lazy."

'Da Ali G Show'

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" director James Bobin saw the fruits of that process up close as a director and writer on "Da Ali G Show," in which Baron Cohen interviewed unsuspecting marks — including prominent figures like Donald Trump, Newt Gingrich and Buzz Aldrin — in character. "When you are working in a real-world environment, you have to be an exceptional actor for people never to question that you are really [who you're pretending to be] — and no one ever did," Bobin said. "That stands as a true testament to Sacha's skill."

While he's primarily known for comedy, Baron Cohen has also turned in more dramatic performances in films like "Sweeney Todd" and "Les Misérables" and spent six years trying to develop a biopic of Queen frontman Freddy Mercury before dropping out because of creative differences with the band. Among other projects, he is developing a musical comedy called "The Lesbian," based on a real story of a Hong Kong billionaire who offered $65 million to any man who succeeded in marrying his lesbian daughter.

Doug Belgrad, president of the motion picture group at Sony Pictures, which is releasing "The Brothers Grimsby," said Baron Cohen has the capacity to tackle a wide range of genres. "Sacha's characters are not only conceptually audacious but brilliantly performed," he said. "It's no surprise that he's also creating distinctive and memorable characters as a dramatic actor as well."

Now a familiar face

Ironically, the one kind of project Baron Cohen can't do anymore is the kind that made him famous in the first place. He is simply too recognizable at this point to pull off a guerrilla-style comedy like "Borat" or "Brüno," particularly in a world connected by omnipresent social media.

'Borat'

"I miss it," he said. "Being in a wild situation when you're deep in character and nobody realizing you're not real — that's the ultimate adrenaline. But listen, I'm too old for it. You have to have the mindset that if something bad happens, everyone is going to be fine. I always received death threats, but they increased after 'Brüno.' You start feeling irresponsible when you have a family."

Even if he felt up for it, in the wake of the 2014 cyberattack on Sony over "The Interview," Baron Cohen thinks Hollywood's appetite for edgy satires like "Borat," which drew official condemnation from Kazakhstan, and "The Dictator," which was censored or banned in several countries, has greatly diminished.

"If I walked in now and asked a major studio to make 'Borat,' I wonder if any of them would say, 'OK, we'll do it,'" he said. "And that's a shame because essentially what North Korea managed to do was to create international censorship."

'Bruno'

Nevertheless, Baron Cohen is determined to keep making boundary-pushing comedies, whatever form they take. In his mind, it all goes back to when he was 8 and his older brothers sneaked him into a showing of Monty Python's 1979 religious satire "Life of Brian."

"That was one of the first comedies I ever saw in a cinema," he said. "It's probably why I'm so deranged now. I remember just laughing and being shocked and the audience convulsing.

"On some subliminal level, I think I'm trying to re-create that feeling. The audience isn't thinking about their kids or their homework or ISIS. They're having this collective experience, going on this wild ride. It's hard because you're always trying to outdo yourself. But that's the bar."

The Last Dragon poster

Can you believe that in a few days it will be the 30th anniversary ofBerry Gordy’s urban classic, The Last Dragon.

Released in theaters on March 22, 1985 and directed by Michael Schultz (Car Wash , Jaws III), the film starred a number of fresh faces to the film world, including Taimak, Julius J. Carry III, Vanity (Denise Katrina Matthews), Chris Murney, Leo O’Brien, Glen Eaton, Mike Starr, Ernie Reyes, Jr., Jim Moody, and Faith Prince. Having smaller roles in the film were Chazz Palminteri, William H. Macy, Carl Anthony Payne II, and Keshia Knight Pulliam.

The film tells the story of Leroy Green aka “Bruce Leroy,’ a teenager from New York, and his journey to finding “the master” to get to the highest level of martial arts known as the “Golden Glow.” Along the way, he must fight an evil martial arts expert called Sho Nuff and rescue a beautiful singer from an obsessed music promoter.

Taimak

Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, it became a hit, grossing more than $25 million at the box office and featured the hit song “Rhythm of the Night”, written by Diane Warren and performed by DeBarge. Today, the film still plays on television and cable channels all over the world.

For Taimak, who was a 19 year-old Black Belt making his feature debut, the role would leave a lasting impression with many. Throughout the years, he’s worked as an actor, stuntman, and instructor.

Now 50, Taimak is still actively working, while attending film festivals. Blackfilm.com recently spoke with Taimak on the film’s anniversary.

Did you ever think you would be still talking about this film 30 years later?

Taimak Bruce Leroy

Taimak: I didn’t think so much about 30 years. I thought more about 5 or 10 years, but never 30 years in that people would be still talking about it.

When you first starred in the film, did you ever wonder if it would be considered a classic in the eyes to many?

Taimak: I was a kid and in terms of classic, I didn’t think in those terms. I knew it was a great movie but not so much about its future and it being a classic.

What was the exciting thing about doing the film?

Taimak: My dream was to be a superhero since I was eight years old and it was a dream come true. I was fulfilling a dream and it was surreal. I grew up running home to see Batman and Spider-Man and all these TV shows, and then eventually came Bruce Lee. By the time I got cast in the film, I was blown away.

Taimak in The Last Dragon

Back in the 80’s people had been watching Kung Fu martial arts with Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and the Shaw Bros. films. The Last Dragon came along and introduced martial arts to a younger and new audience, including urban folks.

Taimak: I still hear it from a number Black martial artists and champions and that’s what happened. They tell me that the film changed their life, from Quinton Jackson of the MMA world to so many people.

Has there been ups and downs in terms of your career since the film?

Taimak 3

Taimak: It’s funny you should ask that. I’m writing a book about my own life story and that will be out at the end of this summer, but the end is yet to come. Trust me. It was a combination of so many things. There were so many dynamics that came into play. Was why there never a Black president before we got Obama? Everything has a time and a place and it was made for us to be on the phone talking about The Last Dragon. It’s a film that deals with many things such as racism and color in a genius way. It was about the bad guy wanting to be a great fighter and the good guy having to learn how to be a great person not just a fighter, but all of those things.

The Last Dragon Cast Reunion 2014

Have you kept in touch with the cast over the years?

Taimak: Some of them are no longer with us, including Julius J. Carry III and Leo O’Brien, but with the other ones, we touch base periodically. We met recently at the 30th Anniversary pre-party where we had a screening and a lot of fans showed up.

How amazing is it that you’re still being called upon to come to conventions and there’s a line of folks wanting to see you?

Taimak at Comic Con

Taimak: That’s an amazing thing when there’s generations of families and fans that come out to these conventions and some stop by and talk to me and about the film. I’m honored by that.

Are you happy with how life has treated you?

Taimak: I’ve never been in a better place than now. Today, I’m in a position where I can make anything I want happen. I couldn’t have said that five years ago.

On Sat March 21st, The Urban Action Showcase and Expo has joined forces with the Unfolding Dream Organization, Khalil Maasi, and Njia Film Works to bring The Last Dragon 30th Anniversary Celebration to Newark, NJ.

Come celebrate 30 years of the Motown meets Martial Arts Cult Classic...on to 5pm! There will be autograph and photo opportunities with Taimak as well as an exclusive fan Screening followed by a Q&A after the film!

Daryl's House in Pawling plans to open outdoor stage for 1,000

John W. Barry, Poughkeepsie Journal9:29 a.m. EST February 18, 2016

Daryl’s House in Pawling, the music venue and restaurant operated by Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates, plans on adding an outdoor stage with a capacity of more than 1,000.

Daryl’s House has announced that its 2016 Backyard Concert Series will kick off with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings on May 27 and former Ulster Countyresident Todd Rundgren on May 29, with additional concerts to follow.

But Town of Pawling Supervisor David Kelly said the project, while under review by the town, has not received final approvals. Kelly lauded Hall for the positive impact Daryl’s House has had on Pawling, but said Hall’s landlord, Jay Maxwell, must receive all approvals before any outdoor shows are staged.

Plans call for the stage to sit behind Daryl’s House, with a lawn for standing and lawn chairs, according to Pat Ryan, marketing director and promoter representative for the restaurant and music venue. Neither Maxwell nor a representative for Hall could be reached.

Hall is a former Dutchess County resident and current resident of Connecticut who opened Daryl’s House on Oct. 31, 2014. Daryl’s House occupies the old location for the Towne Crier Café, which is now located in Beacon.

Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates sat down with the Poughkeepsie Journal to talk about his affection for Dutchess County and how and why he created his restaurant and live music club, Daryl's House, in Pawling. Alex H. Wagner/Poughkeepsie Journal

Hall and band mate John Oates are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, as Hall and Oates, one of the most successful rock acts ever.

They are well known for such songs as “Private Eyes” and “Maneater.” The duo performed at the ...’s House, which has a capacity of 200 for shows with reserved seating and 300 for standing room performances.

Hall for years filmed his Internet and cable television music program, “Live From Daryl’s House,” at his former home in Millerton. Since moving to Connecticut, he has filmed the show, without an audience, at Daryl’s House in Pawling.

Hall moved to Millbrook in 1985, then later relocated to Millerton. He sold his home in Millerton in August 2013 and moved to Connecticut.

The mid-Hudson Valley, Hall told the Journal last year, "reminds me of my childhood. I like nature. I like living in beauty, in a beautiful environment. I love being around animals and nature and all the things country life is about."

Hall and Oates on Friday are scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden, with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings as one of the opening acts.

Netflix’s Love: A Dark Romance About Terrible People

The new series from Judd Apatow about a troubled couple in L.A. takes a long time to pay off—but it’s worth it.

Netflix

Have you ever cringed while watching the difficult romantic melodramas of the millennials on Girls and thought, “I’d love to feel this uncomfortable for a whole day, as opposed to just a Sunday night”? Then Netflix’s new 10-episode seriesLove might just be for you. Created by Judd Apatow, the comedy centers on a relationship between two 30-something basket cases, but you have to sit through a full 40 minutes of their emotional misery before they even meet one another.

Love is the latest reminder that the Netflix model of dropping whole shows at once can lead to stories with a self-indulgent disregard for pacing. Shows like Bloodlineand Sense8 had a tremendous amount of dramatic potential, but they wasted hours unpacking the background of their large ensembles rather than getting the plot moving. Love takes that same approach, but applies it to the awkward fumblings between two lost souls in Los Angeles (played by Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust) for a ride that’s initially frustrating, but eventually rewarding. As a rom-com, it’s perhaps a little too light on both the “rom”and the “com.” But like other excellent half-hour dramedies about the pains of growing up and settling down (Girls,You’re the Worst), Love is at its best when it digs deeper into its protagonists’ biggest (and most repelling) flaws.

Love was created by the married couple Lesley Arfin (who wrote for the first season of Girls) and Rust, along with Apatow, who’s long excelled at mixing autobiographical material into his slice-of-life comedies. At its start, both Mickey and Gus (Rust) are in the middle of disintegrating relationships: Mickey with a drunken loser well out of her league, Gus with a long-term partner who unexpectedly and abruptly leaves him.

The show wastes far too much time digging into this history, which could have been packed into a quick overheard conversation. It’s not too hard, in other words, to ascertain that Mickey is overly reliant on mood-altering substances of every kind, and that Gus is pathologically afraid of risk-taking, but the first two extended-length episodes dwell endlessly on those topics without adding the alleviating effects of actual humor. Shows like Girls and You’re the Worst are much more sitcom-inspired, mixing in more madcap comedy and joke-telling to cover for their low-stakes plotting. Love seems much more inspired by weighty dramas, even if it can’t conjure up much on its own.

The show’s first big note doesn’t arrive until the end of the second episode, when after a confrontation with his ex-girlfriend, Gus angrily throws his DVD collection out of Mickey’s moving car one disc at a time—a clean emotional break in the form of symbolically desecrating the memory of every movie he bought and watched with his girlfriend. It’s hilarious, it’s weird, and it mixes the personal with the laugh-out-loud funny. Love is filled with clever little moments like this, but there’s a lot of slower material to endure on the way there.

For the show to work, viewers will have to buy into these characters—which is a challenge since Arfin, Rust, and Apatow aren’t going for instantly likable. Gus is the kind of wimpy nice guy who finds himself being propositioned for a threesome (in the first episode) and can’t help but awkwardly shrug the whole time (he’s like a sort of overgrown Superbad-era Michael Cera who hasn’t learned anything about human interaction in the intervening 15 years). Mickey is so emotionally detached that she basically delivers every line in a monotone while dragging on a joint. (Jacobs’s portrayal of the self-destructive Mickey—a clear analogue for Arfin—is quite the tour de force).

And yet, unlike with lesser shows, Mickey’s addictions aren’t window dressing for her character, but dark issues that the show eventually works through with authenticity and grace. One episode, centered around a long bender she goes on with the comedian Andy Dick (playing himself) is almost harrowing in its honesty, but it’s beautifully realized. It’s moments like these that help justify the more aimless wandering—but Love makes you work to get to them.

Silk Interview – Return to Music, New Album, Staying True to Sound, Lack of R&B Groups

YKIGS FEBRUARY 22, 2016 1

Silk rnb group 2015

When we featured the news a coupl...onths back that r&b group Silk had announced their new album and new single, there was a lot of excitement among r&b fans. After all, the group had so much success in the 90’s and into the 2000’s, but had gone quiet with nearly a decade passing since their last album. All of that has now changed, and Silk have stirred up the feelings they brought to us on their classics with the new single “Love 4 U 2 Like Me”. The song shows that the group are not only still capable of delivering quality r&b music with feeling, but also that they are listening to what the fans want. YouKnowIGotSoul caught up with Silk to discuss the new single, what to expect on the new album, their current sound, reuniting all five original members, other ventures they’ve gotten into, and more.

YouKnowIGotSoul: We’re loving your new single “Love 4 U 2 Like Me”. You’ve got the 90’s throwback sound mixed with a progressive production. What inspired the song?

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): The song was produced by Wirlie Morris. For us, it was the moment that we found the music that was the foundation for the rest of this project. We’ve been listening to and making a lot of music and we didn’t find that thing that brought us all together that said “This is where we can start.” This was the song that circulated among all of us and we thought it was the one. I think it’s a great re-introduction for ourselves into today’s urban music scene. Wirlie Morris has done other production on Charlie Wilson, New Edition, Keith Sweat. He’s been a mainstay at the top of the Urban A/C charts so it made sense to us music wise and business wise to make the move.

Silk (Gary “Big G” Glenn): There’s also a couple of elements in the song, like “Like Me”, which is on all social media, you need to get the thumbs up. We thought it was an old school, new school presentation that would be received by each generation. We thought it was a very wide spectrum type of song. From the eight year old to the seventy five year old.

YouKnowIGotSoul: The single is the first song from the upcoming album “Quiet Storm” which you’ve announced is coming out next month. When we first featured the news of the album, there was a lot of excitement from the fans. Tell us what to expect on the album.

Silk (Gary “Big G” Glenn): I think they’ll get Silk 2016. We made music that feels good to us and that’s kinda the way we’ve done our music throughout our careers. We’ve been fortunate that the music that’s felt good to us has also felt good to our fans. Without oversimplifying it, sticking to that formula should feel to the fans like it feels good to us.

YouKnowIGotSoul: You said you stuck to the classic Silk sound, but did you find yourselves being influenced by what’s current or trendy? Did you try and do anything new?

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): We maintained throughout our career to stick to our guns and stick to what we felt people were hungry for and loved coming from us. In that sense though, we still kind of added a few more spices to the ingredients. It kinda just came forth. It wasn’t like it was forced. It came within the equation.

YouKnowIGotSoul: “Quiet Storm” is being released on the Silk Entertainment in partnership with Shanachie Entertainment which is where you also released your last album “Always & Forever”. It’s been nearly a decade. What made this the right time to come back now?

Silk (Gary “Big G” Glenn): I think musically we found a good balance between who we have been and who we are becoming musically over time. You go through things in life and you mature and your music should reflect the growth in your personal life. The timing of the music, everything has kinda fell into place at the right time. Even our introduction to Wirlie Morris, it became evident that we had the overall right kind of music to release as an album. The timing feels good to us and we’re putting our best foot forward now.

YouKnowIGotSoul: Catch us up on what you guys have been involved in over the past decade besides touring.

Silk (Gary “Big G” Glenn): I’m an AAU basketball and I coach at the high school level. Gary Jenkins has done a lot of acting on stage and on TV.

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): I just did my first feature in a series that comes on Fox called Sleepy Hollow. I landed a role in one of the particular episodes on that one. That was pretty exciting. I’m also dabbling into some artist development type things. I’m doing some vocal coaching and getting ready to start building my clients up with that. Once we come off of the road, that will be something I’m doing to help future aspiring artists to hone in on their craft.

YouKnowIGotSoul: The other thing that came along with the new album is that all five original members are back together and a part of this project. How important is it for that to be the case? Many groups go through lineup changes and lose members.

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): I think that’s been part of the foundation of making the album. I think we recognized the history of groups. There are usually some pieces that go away or get replaced. There are a lot of stories of groups, and it’s difficult being married to one person, let alone four people! *Laughs* We use that as a rallying cry. We use it as we start to do shows and as we recorded. Every time somebody says five original members, it’s priceless. That helps inspire us at the times when we go through it. We’re brothers, and brothers do go through it. But you find a way to make it work. There’s strength in knowing that there are only five people in the planet who can say they are part of the group Silk, and they are the original members. For us it’s helped us stay together and stay focused on our common goals.

YouKnowIGotSoul: With this album coming out in a time when r&b has changed so much, what are your expectations for it?

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): I think because it’s been missing for so long, everybody is on their heels waiting for it. I think it’s going to be a refreshing re-entry to the industry to our fans and family members.

Silk (Gary “Big G” Glenn): I feel like for me, I hope we have success at the box office so to speak. I know the game has changed, but there are still ways to measure if something is successful. I feel like in once sense I’ve gotten some of what I needed. Consistently people have said what you’ve said about the song, and that means we were able to make some art that is relevant now. I think in the back of your mind if you’re talking about music or sports, when you’re making a comeback, you wonder if you can compete on a high level. I feel like from a creative standpoint, there was been enough validation for the song and performance of it that I feel good and I don’t think it will take anything from what I was hoping to have. I feel good.

YouKnowIGotSoul: Has there ever been a time in the past decade when you guys were close to releasing an album, or was this now the first time you were serious about new music?

Silk (Gary “Big G” Glenn): Musically there were a couple of times we thought we were on the path to doing something, but everything happens for a reason. I guess all of the process and the journey led us to where we are now. I wouldn’t take anything away from it because I don’t know if we’d have what we have right now.

YouKnowIGotSoul: You guys came from an era in the 90’s when there were alot of successful r&b groups. Today’s r&b, we don’t see as many new groups coming out. What do you think that is?

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): I would say it’s because the content of the music seems different. Back in the day, it used to be all about finessing and caressing and touching and foreplay. Today’s music is kinda like one play. As far as r&b music is concerned, we know literally that women interpretation of what you’re doing is rude when it comes to r&b. The perception is that the music is geared towards females. When females don’t have the story lines and they don’t feel they’ve been pampered or they have been caressed or dated in a sense, rather than just pounded, in a sense. *Laughs* That is the main factor. It just left the door open for us to re-introduce it to even the younger generation now so that they can learn some lessons from people before them.

YouKnowIGotSoul: Anything you’d like to add?

Silk (Gary “Lil G” Jenkins): Thank you to the fans for your patience and just being loyal to the music. We are very conscience and cognizant of being away as long as we were. The same effort that we put into getting to this point in our journey and releasing this album now, we’re also interested in putting that much effort into releasing as much content as possible for the next however many years. We are committed to much more frequently releasing new music.

YKIGS FEBRUARY 21, 2016 3

Javier Colon Gravity

Former Season 1 The Voice winner Javier Colon returns with the new video for his single “Gravity”. The song is the first release from his upcoming album and first with Concord Records. The album is also titled “Gravity” and will be his fourth to date and is set to release on April 15th, 2016.

The 15 song set marks a creative milestone for Javier, being that he wrote or co-wrote all of the songs except for three. The project showcases the spectrum of his wide ranging talents, marked by his expressive vocals and signature instrumental arrangements. He had the following to add about “Gravity”:

“I got together with some good songwriters and musicians, and we just let it flow. I wanted to make an album where I could be free to be myself, with no walls or boundaries. I wanted the freedom to be myself musically, which is really all I’ve ever wanted, and I was surrounded by people who encouraged me to do that.”

This will be the first album for Javier since he won The Voice in 2011 and released “Come Through for You” through Republic Records later that year. Eventually he parted ways with the label, and he’s gone back to being an independent artist since.

A few years back during his run on The Voice, we caught up with Javier ... interviewdiscussing his history in music and his first two albums.

David Bowie; Instagram Series'Unbound: A ★ InstaMiniSeries,' a David Bowie-approved Instagram series focusing on the singer's new LP, has announced its premiere date Jimmy King

'Young Love' Singer Sonny James Dead at 87

James was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame

BY STEPHEN L. BETTS February 22, 2016
Sonny JamesSonny James, known for his hit "Young Love," has died at 87. Ed Rode/WireImage

Sonny James, whose first Number One single, 1957's "Young Love," topped both the pop and country charts, and was followed by more than 20 Number One country hits, died Monday, February 22nd, of natural causes at Nashville's Alive Hospice, according to a statement on his official website. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, James was 87.

Little Jimmy Dickens

James was born James Hugh Loden in the small farming community of Hackleburg, Alabama, and played music with his parents and older sister Thelma. The young James, who first learned to play music on a homemade instrument fashioned from a molasses bucket, eventually earned a spot performing with his family on a Muscle Shoals radio show.

The family soon became a local, then regional favorite, performing throughout the South, and appearing regularly on radio shows in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Raleigh, North Carolina.

While he was still in high school, James joined the National Guard and went on to work in the family store in Hackleburg. His music career was temporarily derailed when he and his fellow Guardsmen were among the first Guard troops to arrive in Korea at the outset of the Korean conflict late in 1950.

By 1952, James was back in Alabama but soon left for Nashville and reconnected with a former roommate, musician-producer Chet Atkins.

In spite of Atkins' leadership at RCA Records, he referred James to Ken Nelson, who was producing acts for Capitol Records in Los Angeles at the time. James' alliance with Capitol, which began with a Top Ten single in 1953, "That's Me Without You," would lead to an unbroken streak of 16 chart-topping releases from 1967 to 1971.

The singer also joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1965, the year he scored his second Number One (after the hugely successful "Young Love") "You're the Only World I Know." Other hits during that time included "It's Just a Matter of Time," "Empty Arms" and "Since I Met You Baby," all of which had originally been hits for R&B acts, making James the first — and most successful country act — to cover such material during the turbulent Civil Rights era. During his early years with Capitol, James also played fiddle on sessions for one of the label's bluegrass acts, Jim & Jesse.

In the early Seventies, James produced three LPs for teenager Marie Osmond, whose debut country hit, "Paper Roses," was a Number One country (and Top Five pop) song in 1973.

By the mid-Seventies, James had moved to Columbia Records and released his final Number One, "Is It Wrong (For Loving You)."

James, who was nicknamed the Southern Gentleman, also appeared in a handful of country-music-themed films, including Nashville Rebel, Las Vegas Hillbillies and Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar.

He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006 by Kix Brooks and was the first country artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Fusion to Air Russell Simmons’ All Def Movie Awards Special Opposite Oscars

It’s not likely to put a dent in the ratings for the Oscars, but the symbolism can’t be ignored. Russell Simmons’ All Def Movie Awards has struck a deal for a highlights special to air Sunday on theFusion cabler opposite ABC’s telecast of the 88th annual Academy Awards.

The event produced by Simmons’ All Def Digital venture was born in response to the uproar over this year’s all-white roster of Oscar acting nominees, the second consecutive year that minority actors were left on the sidelines of filmdom’s most coveted kudos. Tony Rock, brother of Oscars host Chris Rock, will emcee the All Def ceremony. Fusion, moreover, is jointly owned by ABC parent Disney and Univision, although Univision is in the process of buying out Disney’s stake in the cable channel that launched in October 2013.

The All Def ceremony will tape Wednesday night at Hollywood nightclub Lure. An hourlong highlights special will bow at 7 p.m. Sunday and repeat throughout the night. Talent committed to appearing on the telecast includes Tyrese Gibson, Nick Cannon, Terry Crews, Marlon Wayans, Vivica A. Fox, King Bach, Sannaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Robert Townsend, Bill Duke, Gary Owen and Jerrod Carmichael.

“The All Def Movie Awards are meant to fill a generational and cultural void — just as the MTV Movie Awards did,” said Sanjay Sharma, president-CEO of ADD. “Fusion is the perfect partner to celebrate the un-celebrated, and use comedy to encourage honest dialogue and action.”

The All Def kudos feature a mix of traditional categories for best picture, actor, actress and such along with such distinctive competitions as “Best Helpful White Person” and “Best Black Survivor in a Movie.” The public is invited to vote online on best picture nominees “Beasts of No Nation,” “Chi-raq,” “Concussion,” “Creed,” “Dope” and “Straight Outta Compton.”

ADD is considering the possibility of an All Def TV kudos to recognize small-screen fare.

Fusion, which is available in about 40 million homes, and ADD previously partnered last year on a multimedia project that examined the nation’s juvenile justice system.

Kendrick Lamar to Induct N.W.A Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Kid Rock to also welcome Cheap Trick into Rock Hall at Brooklyn induction ceremony

Kendrick Lamar will induct pioneering hip-hop group N.W.A into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the April 8th ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Arena. Kid Rock will also be among the artists on hand to welcome Cheap Trick into the Rock Hall. Lamar and Rock join previously announced presenters the Black Keys, Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas.

NWA; Hall of Fame;

Lamar, a protégé of Dr. Dre's, has spoke often about N.W.A's influence on him growing up in Compton. "When I think of N.W.A, it wasn't even music to me, it was a real lifestyle," Lamar said in an introductory video for the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. "Brothas from my neighborhood that made it out."

In October, Lamar also shared a tribute to the late N.W.A member Eazy-E. "People were scared to talk about these kinds of tough situations, but because [Eazy] and the group took it upon themselves to talk about [these things], every artist is able to and they owe it to him," Lamar said. "He's not only the birth of gangsta rap, but he's the birth of a whole legacy of being able to say what you want to say on a record and not being in fear of what others may think and not offending your own art and your own reflection."

Rolling Stone spoke to Ice Cube in December following news of N.W.A's passage into the Rock Hall's Class of 2016. "It means a lot of things. It means that the group's mark is kind of solidified. It's all legitimized in a way because the whole music industry has to honor the group in a way. It's just hard to sum up in words, really," the rapper said. "It's everything that kind of eluded us in a lot of ways when we were coming up. So many people were opinionated about N.W.A. I think everyone now at this point, no matter how you feel about us, understands what the group actually did and what it means to modern music."

The 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony airs on HBO on April 30th.

Vanessa Hudgens to Star in DC Comics Comedy Pilot ‘Powerless’ at NBC

Elizabeth Wagmeister

@EWagmeister

Vanessa Hudgens has been cast in NBC’s DC Comics comedy pilot “Powerless,” Variety has learned. The starring role is Hudgens’ first gig after “Grease Live,” for which she received rave reviews.

Based on characters from the DC universe, “Powerless” is a workplace comedy set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.

Hudgens will play Emily Locke, an insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people. The character likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done, and she finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various superheroes that proliferate in her city.

The role marks Hudgens’ first regular role on a TV series. The triple-threat rose to worldwide fame on Disney Channel’s “High School Musical,” which spawned two sequels, including a theatrical release. Most recently, she stunningly played Rizzo on Fox’s live “Grease” TV musical, and was touted as the star of the show, despite her father passing away just hours before the broadcast. Her film credits include “Spring Breakers,” alongside James Franco; “Machete Kills”; and “Sucker Punch.” She is repped by CAA.

“Powerless” hails from Warner Bros. Television, and marks the latest DC project to make its way to television, following the CW’s “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and “iZombie” from DC’s Vertigo imprint, Fox’s “Gotham” and “Supergirl” on CBS. Should the pilot go to series, it would be the only DC comedy on television.

The single-cam, half-hour comedy was penned by Ben Queen, who will exec produce. Michael Patrick Jann will direct the ensemble pilot.

At 87, Walk of Fame Honoree Ennio Morricone Lives Up to His Legend

Ennio Morricone Walk of Fame

FEBRUARY 22, 2016 | 12:48PM PT

Jon Burlingame

@jonburlingame

The career of Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who on Feb. 26 will receive a star on theHollywood Walk of Fame, has few — if any — parallels in the history of film music.

The composer for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “The Mission,” “The Untouchables,” “Cinema Paradiso” and an estimated 375 other feature films (not to mention another 90 or so TV projects) is perhaps the most prolific in Western cinema.

He is also among the most respected. Filmmakers from Terrence Malick to John Boorman, Mike Nichols to Barry Levinson, Roman Polanski to Bernardo Bertolucci, Roland Joffe to Brian De Palma, have sought him out to contribute to their films.

Reached at his home in Rome, he says via interpreter, that receiving the star is “a great accolade,” adding, “I can only anticipate how I’m going to feel when I’m there in L.A.”

It’s just the latest honor for the 87-year-old maestro. In 2007, he received an honorary Oscar for his body of work. He is nominated again this year (his sixth time) for his music in Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.”

“If you look at the Sergio Leone Westerns, that was a whole new way of dealing with drama,” says Hans Zimmer of the Italian director’s trilogy of Clint Eastwood films starting with 1964’s “Fistful of Dollars.” “A great composer can literally be timeless with the devices they use.” Those devices included wailing harmonica, savage electric guitar bursts and soaring vocals. “Anybody with less courage and less imagination just wouldn’t have done it,” adds Zimmer. “For me, he’s singularly the most gratifying composer.”

Morricone says he found working with Leone “very rewarding,” although, he adds, “I didn’t actually realize I was bringing about a kind of musical revolution in the Western genre.”

His wildly original theme for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” based on a coyote howl and played on an ocarina, became a hit record, sending Morricone’s soundtrack to No. 4 on the pop album charts in 1968. But commissions for his scores in America didn’t occur until the late ’70s/early ’80s, when such films as “Days of Heaven” and “The Island” began appearing on his resume.

In Europe, however, he was a phenomenon, sometimes scoring more than 20 films a year. Today, he admits, he took every assignment offered. “Now it’s different,” he says. “I’m a little bit more selective.”

Yet he never sloughed off any assignment. Even B action pictures like “Guns for San Sebastian” and “The Five Man Army,” both from the late ’60s, sport glorious themes befitting far better movies. His thrillers veer into the avant-garde. Even infamous bombs, such as “Exorcist II: The Heretic” and “Mission to Mars,” were inevitably buoyed by Morricone music.

“I didn’t actually realize that I was bringing about a kind of musical revolution in the Western genre.”
ENNIO MORRICONE

“He really is a genius,” says director Levinson, who hired Morricone for “Bugsy” and “Disclosure” in the early 1990s. Visiting the maestro in Rome at the time, he soon discovered that there was no piano in his writing room and was stunned to learn that, when conceiving a score, “he doesn’t just hear the melody, he hears it with 74 musicians in his head.”

That’s because Morricone is not only classically trained having studied at the renowned Santa Cecilia Conservatory, but he also worked throughout the 1950s as an arranger and orchestrator for radio, TV, records and theater. He credits all these experiences for his versatility and innovative sensibility.

And he takes pride in personally orchestrating every note, creating the very specific sound of each score. That’s why, Levinson adds, “there is a signature to so much of his work.”

Morricone’s masterpiece, many say, is 1986’s “The Mission,” which revolves around 18th-century Jesuits in South America. The story demanded a choral and orchestral approach that acknowledged period liturgical music, native flutes and chants, and oboe solos to match what Jeremy Irons’ priest character was pretending to play.

Joffe remembers screening the film for the composer and then being turned down. “He was in tears. He said, ‘You don’t need music for this film, it’s too beautiful.’” Yet four days later, Morricone phoned with an idea for a theme. Today, in his concerts, he plays extended suites from “The Mission.”

“He is a magical person,” says Joffe, who employed Morricone on three other films including “City of Joy.” “When Ennio is on form, he has a precise and clear way of getting to the heart of something in a totally unexpected way.”

Warren Beatty, who worked closely with Morricone on both 1994’s “Love Affair” and 1998’s “Bulworth,” puts it simply: “There’s no better living composer than Ennio.”

In recent years, Giuseppe Tornatore has succeeded Leone as Morricone’s favorite director. They’ve collaborated on a dozen films together since “Cinema Paradiso,” and they are so close Morricone often writes the main themes even before the film is shot.

The maestro now divides his time between films, concertizing and writing what he calls “absolute music” (music for the concert hall). Does he regret spending so much time on movies over the past 55 years?

“I have a very satisfying, rewarding life, both as a man and an artist,” he says. “Despite almost 500 scores for film and television, I have also found the time to compose around 100 pieces of absolute music. So I am satisfied and proud of what I have written.”

David Bowie’s Blackstar Album To Become Instagram Miniseries
02/2016
Link

David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, has been reimagined as an Instagram series which will debut on the social networking site’s InstaMiniSeries channel Thursday.

Unbound is made up of 16 episodes described as “visual interpretations” of the late Bowie’s songs. The Instagram team of Carolynn Cecilia and Nikki Borges were given pre-release access to the music from Bowie’s 25th studio album last fall to create their own take with “no limits or preconditions on his part,” according to a statement.

The narrative is not linear, and the series is intended to take the audience “on a journey of evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album’s music, lyrics and artwork.” Instagram says it’s designed with a global audience in mind.

The first episode airs February 25 at 8PM ET on instagram.com/instaminiseries.

New episodes will then debut at the same time each subsequent Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Bowie released Blackstar on January 8, his 69th birthday and two days before his passing.

Watch Wynonna and the Big Noise's Humid 'Cool Ya'

Wynonna dons shades for 'CBS This Morning' performance of red-hot album opener

BY STEPHEN L. BETTS February 23, 2016
Wynonna and the Big Noise performed "Cool Ya" on 'CBS This Morning.'

Wynonna JuddWynonna and the Big Noise performed a trio of songs from the band's self-titled debut LP for the CBS This Morning Saturday Sessions one week after the new album's February 12th release. Backed by the four-piece band that includes her drummer-husband Cactus Moser (who also produced the record), Judd tore through the slinky blues of the romantic "You Are So Beautiful" and offered a web-exclusive rendition of the gutsy "You Make My Heart Beat Too Fast," which also features harmonies from Moser.

SIDEBAR

Wynonna Judd on Making H...Record' »

Donning shades for her performance of the LP's red-hot opener "Cool Ya," penned by Lisa Carver and Andrew Ripp, Judd is part snake charmer and part temptress, on a track with a Middle Eastern vibe that demonstrates just how much she's relishing her new role as front woman of this bluesy, roots-influenced band.

.

The new album, which debuted in the Top Fifteen on the country chart and is also rapidly climbing the Americana chart, has broadened the singer's scope and reached a whole new segment of the music-consuming public, many of whom she acknowledges were not even born when she and her mother Naomi were harmonizing of such massive country hits as "Why Not Me," "Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days)" and "Love Can Build a Bridge." But whatever trepidation may surface from longtime fans, it's nothing compared to her own.

.

"I read a book called Who Moved My Cheese?" she tells Rolling Stone Country. "It's about change; some people don't like it, some people won't do it, some people embrace it and some people thrive on it. I'm all of the above. I'm seeing myself in this book and I'm seeing it happen with the fans. Some are saying, 'I embrace this love affair that you're having; good for you.' I'm sure some are irritated by the love story because it's a deep and wide story. Then there are some who are saying, 'More Wynonna and less of the Big Noise.' It's really hard for them to let go of the past and see me with a band. Because, I am telling you, it's not Wynonna, Inc. over here and the Big Noise over there."

Wynonna and the Big Noise will be on the West Coast this week, for a series of California shows beginning Wednesday, February 24th, in Palm Desert. See more of the band's tour dates here.

Riviera Boulevard to be renamed Elvis Presley Way

Norm Clarke

Norm Clarke is one of Las Vegas's most notable and recognizable celebrities. This eye-patched man-about-town knows it all about this vibrant city in the desert -- where to go, what to do, and most importantly, where to see and be seen.

Almost four decades after his death, Elvis Presley is getting a street named after him in the city where he rocketed back to prominence.

The rumor is true, Clark Country Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani said.

With the upcoming implosion of the Riviera hotel-casino, Riviera Boulevard will be renamed Elvis Presley Way, she said.

It will start at Las Vegas Boulevard, cross Paradise Road and loop through the valet area of the Westgate, where Elvis launched his comeback in 1969 when Kirk Kerkorian opened The International. The name was later changed to the Las Vegas Hilton and the LVH before time-share king David Siegel bought the property in summer 2014 and renamed it Westgate, after his Florida-based company.

Giunchigliani said Siegel's representatives met recently with her planning staff to start the renaming process.

Siegel wants Elvis Presley Way to help market the hotel and the Elvis exhibit that was loaned to him by Graceland.

Giunchigliani said the Riviera sign at the intersection of Riviera Boulevard and Paradise Road will be removed.

"We'll try to put it some place appropriate; maybe the (Neon) Boneyard will take it or some place along those lines," she said.

I asked whether she could confirm the rumor that Siegel is planning to build a boutique hotel and a water feature in the 20-some acres in front of the building.

"I have not heard that," she said.

Naming a street in Presley's honor is long overdue. "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" had an eight-year run of sellouts in the 1,150-seat main theater. For years his official record of sold-out shows from July 1969 to December 1976 was listed as 837. But Graceland's chief archivist, Angie Marchese, after researching Presley's Las Vegas years, revised the number to 636 last year as Graceland's partnership with Westgate was being worked out.

Presley died Aug. 16, 1977. He was 42.

Las Vegas Review-Journal reader Joe Stanhibel, who has been pushing for the Elvis honor for some time, said the only two streets he found were Elvis Presley Court near Jones Boulevard and Grand Teton Drive and Elvis Alive Drive off state Route 157 near U.S. Highway 95.

'La Voz México' 2016: Gloria Trevi Confirmed As Coach For Season 5 [VIDEO]

Gloria Trevi On 'La Voz México'
The first coach of 'La Voz México' 2016 has been confirmed as auditions are underway around the country. Televisa

Gloria Trevi has been confirmed as a coach for Season 5 of "La Voz México." The "Esa Hembra Es Mala" singer is the first personality to be named in the Miguel Angel Fox production. There are three more seats left and other names that have been rumored to be on the panel are Juan Gabriel, Shakiraand Alejandro Sanz. The latter was part of Season 1 of the show and would be his return to the reality program if he opts to come back. Televisa opted not to produce the show last year as there was a budget issue and opted to produce a "Big Brother" edition. Although there was a lot of noise in social media, the reality show didn't do too well in the ratings game.

This year, Televisa will be producing two seasons of "La Voz" side by side. One will be the traditional format, while the other one will be a kids version. Producer Fox has a lot in his plate as he will be behind both productions and will need to coordinate schedules for both. Not only will they need to accomodate the shooting days, but each coach has their own agenda and are generally still touring as they do the show. This has presented a complication for production. For "La Voz Kids" only three coaches are needed. In total, they will need 7 personalities to take on those chairs, plus 7 more that serve as the assistants. More names are set to be confirmed in the coming days. "La Voz México" will start airing in April while "La Voz Kids México" will air in 2017.

'Mary Poppins 2' Cast: Lin-Manuel Miranda In Talks To Star In Disney's Classic Sequel

“Hamilton’s” star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is reportedly in talks to join the sequel of one of Disney’s favorite classics, “Mary Poppins.” According to Variety, the Broadway genius could be getting on board as Jack, opposite Emily Blunt, who rumor has it will be playing the world’s favorite nanny.

Producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt revealed that the new film would take place in the Depression-era London 20 years after the first film, the unforgettable classic starring Julie Andrewsand Dick Van Dyke, which was set in pre-World War I England.

Even though it is not all set in stone, Miranda and Blunt would be perfect for the roles. The British actress is no stranger to comedies and family-fantasy films, and lets not forget her impressive lip sync skills on Spike’s TV show “Lip Sync Battle.” On the other hand, the Puerto Rican actor is a Tony Award and Grammy winner, and recently received the “Genius Grant” from the MacArthur Foundation.

In addition, the 36-year-old performer already has some Disney spirit running through his veins. Back in 2012, he starred in “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” co-starring Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton. He also has already partnered with J.J. Abrams to create a new song for “Star Wars,” and is currently creating music for the studio’s upcoming musical “Moana.”

Nothing has been said about Miranda’s possible participation on the song and score composition part.Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman have been chosen as the musical masterminds behind “Mary Poppins 2,” as of now. Rob Marshall, who is no stranger to musicals with productions such as “Into the Woods,” “Nine,” and “Chicago” under his belt, will be stepping up as production runner.

Shakira Talks Juggling Career With Maternity; Hints To New Album In Spanish [VIDEO]

Shakira, Zootopia

Shakira is currently a very busy bee attending coast-to-coast promotion events for her upcoming film,“Zootopia” -- In theatres everywhere on March 4. The Colombian superstar, who gives live to “Gazelle” in the awaited Disney movie, gave a few interviews during a spectacular Zootopia-themed party in Orlando’s Animal Kingdom earlier this week.

“I have no idea how I’m going to do it because I’ve never done it before. I’ve never done a tour with two kids and a husband, who can’t even leave his city, because Gerard [Piqué] is tied to Barcelona, like a soldier. I don’t know, he would have to leave his life on the filed but they don’t let him leave often,” the 39-year-old singer said during an interview with Telemundo’s “Un Nuevo Día.”

Shakira also mentioned that rumors about her asking animators to give her character a little more curves were not that far away from the truth. “Yeah, the only thing I told the director was, ‘She is too skinny, she is too skinny. Give her a little meat,” Shak admitted between laughs.

And if fans weren’t counting the days to catch their favorite singer’s voice shining on the big screen, Shakira hinted to a new album, which could bring her back to her poetic Spanish roots. “I’m starting to write again and ideas are starting to flow…In Spanish, I have a lot of things to say in Spanish this time.”

David Bowie's Son Applauds "Beautiful" Brit Awards Tribute

Annie Lennox, Gary Oldman and Lorde saluted the late musician at the U.K. awards ceremony.

Duncan Jones was bewildered by the Grammy Awards' tribute to his father, David Bowie. But he approves of the Brit Awards' salute to the late legend.

Social media users praise Lorde's stunning tribute to David Bowie at the BRITs <a href=https://t.co/obp6qQvT51" />

Jones, the director of Source Code, Moon and the forthcoming feature film Warcraft, has declared the Brits' tribute as a "beautiful" moment that he enjoyed so much he shared links to it with his 281,000 Twitter followers.

"Finally found the links to tonight's Brits. Just... beautiful. Thank you," he tweeted.

The annual ceremony in London paid homage to the iconic singer with a presentation that included some impassioned words from Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman, a musical medley of Bowie's hits and a cover of "Life on Mars" from 1971's Hunky Dory, performed by Lorde. Oldman also accepted a Brit Icon award on behalf of Bowie and his family.

It was a different story when Lady Gaga helmed a Bowie medley at the Grammys. Jones later tweeted what appeared to be a dictionary definition of "gaga," which includes the description "overexcited or irrational" and "typically as a result of infatuation."

He wrote, "'overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.' Damn it! What IS that word!?"

Bowie died Jan. 10 after a battle with cancer. His final studio album, Blackstar, which dropped just two days earlier, has been met with critical and commercial success around the globe and gave Bowie his first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

'Smallville's' Laura Vandervoort: Melissa Benoist Is the "Supergirl I Wanted to See All Along"

After playing Kara Zor-El on The CW's superhero drama, Vandervoort is guest-starring on CBS' 'Supergirl' as villain Indigo. Michael Yarish/CBS

After playing Kara Zor-El on The CW's superhero drama, Vandervoort is guest-starring on CBS' 'Supergirl' as villain Indigo.

Laura Vandervoort has officially passed the Supergirl mantle to Melissa Benoist.

After donning Supergirl's cape on The WB/CW's Smallvillefor six seasons, Vandervoort is set to guest-star on the CBS drama Monday, where she'll take on DC Comics villain Indigo.

"It's definitely a switch of roles, but that's what I liked most about Indigo," Vandervoort tells THR. "She's almost a polar opposite of Supergirl and that's what was so fun about playing her."

For the actress, seeing Melissa Benoist take on her former role as the DC Comics character was exciting — largely because CBS' Greg Berlanti/Ali Adler drama goes much deeper into comic book mythology than Smallville did.

"This is a completely different version of Supergirl than we had on Smallville," Vandervoort says. "On Smallville, Kara was an adolescent, immature version of Supergirl. She thought she knew it all and thought she could take care of things on her own, not to mention she didn't wear the tights and the cape. It was pre-Supergirl, whereas on this show, Melissa is playing the character from the comics. She's trying to figure out her powers and her place in this world. It's almost more like a Clark Kent character, where she's working a day job and wears the glasses and that whole thing."

While Benoist is able to go full Supergirl, that's not something Vandervoort has any regret about missing out on during her tenure on Smallville.

"Getting to see any actress wearing the tights and the cape was pretty cool for me because I didn't get the opportunity to do that on Smallville. We're finally getting a series about Supergirl where you see her in her full glory, in her costume, and I'm so proud of this show and what they've done with the character."

When Vandervoort showed up on set to film her episode, that was actually the first time she met Benoist despite publicly voicing her support back when theGlee alum first landed the major role.

"I was just excited that this show finally got its day because there was talk eight years ago about doing a Supergirl series and it just didn't happen," Vandervoort says. "This is exactly how I imagined a Supergirl series back then. Meeting Melissa on my first day was great. We hit it off and started comparing notes about how I had done it vs. what she's doing. My version was much more of a child and was kind of bratty. But now I love what they've done, she's much more a mature person who is learning as she goes and she doesn't have it all together yet while she's saving the day and discovering her own strength. This is the Supergirl I wanted to see all along."

Vandervoort and Benoist will go head-to-head when Indigo wreaks havoc on National City in Monday's episode, "Solitude."

"Indigo can transport via the internet and technology, which makes her equally dangerous in the digital form as she is in the physical form," Vandervoort says. "That causes trouble for Kara because she can't always get a grasp on Indigo since she's able to disappear through any technology and pop up just as quickly. And she has a unique connection to Kara's past which will be revealed in this episode."

As for what to expect from Monday's hour, Vandervoort says Kara isn't the only one with a surprising connection to Indigo.

"She is also connected with Non [Chris Vance] and his larger plan," Vandervoort says. "There's a lot happening and a lot to be revealed. You don't quite know what her purpose is and why she's showing up right now, but she first appears when she hacks into an Ashley Madison sort of website and leaks client info to Cat [Calista Flockhart]. She just creates widespread panic in the city."

Back when Smallville was on the air, it was the only show of its kind. But five years later, the TV landscape is overflowing with comic book shows — including three more DC series produced by Berlanti. Asked if Smallville would still be the same show if it was on today, Vandervoort doesn't think much would have changed.

"Smallville had its own mood and vibe and that worked for the show because it was about the characters before they were truly who they were destined to be," Vandervoort says. "Clark's [Tom Welling] world was on the Kent farm and his job at the newspaper. And of course the show changed over the course of 10 years but I don’t think it would change if it were on the air today to fit into the time. I think it still would fit as is. There are so many superhero shows on television that are glossy and high-action and I think Smallville would have fit right in with those but it would have had its own niche."

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on CBS.

'Prey': TV Review

Ben Blackall/Red Production Company
The acting makes it worth the effort. TWITTER
2/25/2016

This new British cop series on BBC America uses great acting to cover up story weaknesses, proving that accents always help.

British dramas, particularly those involving cops, have a long history of being embraced by American critics and viewers — sometimes because they’re brilliant, other times because they’re just different (and always seemingly well-written and superbly acted). No matter where the crime scene is set — London or some distant small town — there’s usually a sea of open arms when the finished product arrives here.

It would be easy for BBC America's Prey to get the same treatment. Presented as two three-part stories created and written by newcomer Chris Lunt and executive produced by Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax), Prey has fantastic, engaging actors, consistent directors (Nick Murphy of The Awakening andOccupation handling the first three episodes and Lewis Arnold of Misfits and Humans handling the last three) and checks off a lot of boxes.

But ultimately the writing isn’t quite there, hurriedly attempting to cram relatively big ideas into each three-episode arc, and in the process revealing the story's flaws.

Luckily, Prey has Rosie Cavaliero (A Young Doctor’s Notebook, Little Dorrit) as the centerpiece in each story. Lunt and Shindler seem to be trying to create something along the lines of Prime Suspect, focusing on the mid-career rise of DS Susan Reinhardt (Cavaliero) as she struggles to get a handle on two difficult cases and perhaps setting up the trajectory of the next Jane Tennison (brought to gloriously complicated life by Helen Mirren).

That might be an unfair comparison, because Mirren is legendary and Prime Suspect is the zenith of British cop shows, but you certainly get a whiff of that intent in Prey. If Cavaliero is ready for the rise — and she’s an excellent actress, taking charge of a character still coming into focus — the writing will need to get in shape to support her. It's not there yet.

What’s not lacking is the acting, as Prey taps two superb performers to anchor both stories: John Simm (Life on Mars, State of Play, The Village) as a detective accused of killing his wife and one of his two sons, and Philip Glenister (Mad Dogs, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) as a by-the-book prison officer who inexplicably helps a prisoner escape.

Bolstered by a stacked roster of very capable British actors, Simm, Glenister and Cavaliero go a long way toward helping you not worry about wasting your time. Whatever pitfalls might pop up in the writing, the performances are racing forward full-steam.

Prey kicks off with the Simm storyline and it’s one that moves at lightning speed, engaging you thoroughly and then disappointing you when it resolves and you realize it was built on intrigue it can’t properly support. We meet Simm as DC Marcus Farrow investigating a dead body that conveniently calls to mind an old case (so old the files are on floppy disks). Within a few scenes, Farrow is interviewing a suspect who vaguely threatens his family; soon after that, his wife and son are dead, and Farrow is the prime suspect.

Tracking him down is acting Senior Investigating Officer Reinhardt, whose personal life is a shambles because she can’t get over her failed marriage (her former husband is remarried and has a newborn). She just pours more hours into the job and, as BBC America has put it, “finds comfort by eating her feelings.”

You might remember that Jane Tennison was a wreck in the relationship department and worked insanely long hours while battling a serious drinking problem. Like Tennison before her, Reinhardt struggles in the male-dominated police force, with co-workers believing she’s in over her head in the first case and struggling to prove her worth in the second after getting passed over for promotion.

It would be wonderful to follow Cavaliero as DS Reinhardt, making her way in this world, not only because it echoes a superb actress and excellent series that came before, but also because the subtle stylings of Cavaliero — perfectly playing a detective who is capable but not yet proven and trusted — make for an interesting character study. But Prey would have to shore up some of the story planks going forward.

You can sense the trouble in the first story, premiering Thursday night. The frantic, framed-detective-on-the-run narrative is entirely propelled by Simm, an actor who has been so great in so many roles, commanding the screen at all turns. But here he is asked to do a few things that don’t quite work, starting with delivering a very delayed reaction to the news that one of his sons also died on the night he discovered his wife, stabbed and dying in the kitchen. (Overwhelmed, he runs outside and crumples into some muddy water, and that’s pretty much where Prey leaves him.)

It all happens a bit too quickly, as does the second story, in which prison officer Dave Murdoch goes from stable to unstable as he tries to protect his daughter (the common thread of both stories is the Reinhardt character trying to figure out why two good men implode, seemingly on purpose).

As with Simm, you can have Glenister do pretty much anything — character motivation be damned — and the hour will fly by. Those actors combine with Cavaliero to cover up the dubious structure of each three-episode story. They are all so good at elevating the material that you want to like Prey, even when you realize it’s running on overly familiar ground, just with slightly different accents.

'Hap and Leonard': TV Review

Hilary Gayle/SundanceTV
Sweaty, hard-boiled Texas thrills.
3/2/2016

Michael K. Williams and James Purefoy bicker charmingly in SundanceTV's Texas noir, which co-stars Christina Hendricks.

The challenge of adapting Joe R. Lansdale's Hap and Leonard series is that of adapting many of the prolific Texas scribe's books: Character, setting and atmospherics are front and center, but the stories don't quite fit into any easily embraceable commercial genre.

In 1988 in a fictional Texas town, Hap Collins (James Purefoy) and Leonard Pine (Michael K. Williams) are at the bottom of the economic ladder. They work the rose fields and money is so scarce that Nilla wafers are Leonard's idea of a treat. Hap is a former '60s idealist and an ex-con, while Leonard is a gay Vietnam vet. They don't "do" things, exactly, so much as they chew the fat and kick-box and they keep their life aspirations low. Sometimes in Lansdale's nine-book series they solve crimes, but they're not detectives, even if you know the CBS version of Hap and Leonard would start with them getting their PI license, while the Fox version would begin with the police department hiring them to work with a strong female detective. Hap and Leonard are just buddies whose lives are constantly tangential to various crimes.

Directed in its early installments by Jim Mickle and written by Mickle and Nick Damici, the six-episode first season of SundanceTV's Hap and Leonard is taken from Lansdale's Savage Season, in which our main characters are pulled into a recovery mission for a stolen fortune. Hap is lured by his enticing ex-wife Trudy (Christina Hendricks), Leonard is lured by Hap and a heist of sorts brings them into contact with an eccentric group of counterculture revolutionaries and a pair of relentless psychopaths.

Unlike a slash-and-burn adaptation job like Hulu's 11.22.63, which forced the writers to trim a 1,000-page book into eight hours, Mickle and Damici's paring is minimal. The book has a crazy, violent conclusion and some suspenseful set-pieces, but the bulk of the pages are characters cracking wise, lamenting the dreams they let slip away and fantasizing uses for cash they may never find. The result is that Hap and Leonard gets to be very true to the plot ofSavage Season, with extra time to plant early seeds for a second season based on Lansdale's Mucho Mojo.

Mickle and Damici worked in the same capacity on 2014's very fineCold in July (Don Johnson's character from that film is a part of the Hap and Leonard literary universe and could theoretically appear in later seasons), and they have a strong sense of how to capture Lansdale's pulpy, sweat-drenched world, with its slightly large-than-life explorations of masculinity in a unique Texas landscape where attitudes toward race and sexuality are slow to change with the times. Filmed in Baton Rouge, Hap and Leonard has ample atmosphere, even if East Texans will probably bristle at the idea that Louisiana is interchangeable. The Hap and Leonard friendship is a fantastic mixture of politically incorrect, boundary-free banter, loving antagonism and do-anything-for-each-other dedication, and the writers push hard to convey the friendship, even if some of the back-and-forths feel more natural on the page.

Casting is everything with a buddy show this pure and Hap and Leonard made one spectacular and obvious choice and one against-the-grain choice with potential. This may be as close as Williams ever comes to a conventional lead, but Leonard is a part so full of wit, warmth and looming menace that none of the Wire andBoardwalk Empire veteran's considerable jagged charisma is wasted. The casting was uncanny when it was announced and he's close to perfect onscreen as well. Purefoy, though, would be nobody's intuitive choice as a working-class Texan and his accent is all over the map and periodically across the pond. What Purefoy delivers, though, is the studied ease of a man who once cared about things, stopped caring and now just coasts on charm. Purefoy and Williams sell the rapport between their characters, and Purefoy also crackles with Hendricks, who brings the perfect '50s femme fatale vibe to a story that had to tame some of its sexuality for basic cable.

SundanceTV appears to have mostly let the rest of the adult content in Hap and Leonard slide, maintaining Lansdale's Texploitation largesse and delivering a product that's likely more accessible than the network's remarkable, but underwatched, Rectify. In our age of boundless Netflix or premium cable (or even FX) running times, the 45-minute episodes and the sometimes light narrative leave the initial three episodes feeling somewhat thin, but that feeling could abate in the presumably intense closing three episodes, or maybe the first season will be best binged as prelude to a second season. With Mickle and Damici in their comfort zone and Williams and Purefoy as key anchors, Hap and Leonard should be a winner for SundanceTV.

Jessica Chastain, Queen Latifah Form Female-Empowerment Production Company

"Film has always possessed the power to defy convention and change hearts and minds, and this power and potential must be harnessed to challenge the current archaic norms related to women within the entertainment industry," founder Chiara Tilesi says

BY ALTHEA LEGASPI February 24, 2016

Jessica Chastain, Queen Latifah and others have launched We Do It Together, a non-profit TV/film production company focused on female empowerment Mike Coppola/Getty

With the Oscars just around the corner this Sunday and the lack of diversity discussion surrounding the event, a recent study has revealed that through the past 10 years, women represent 19 percent of non-acting nominations. That news makes the formation of We Do It Together production company seem all the more timely. According to Variety, Queen Latifah, Jessica Chastain, Juliette Binoche and Catherine Hardwicke have launched the non-profit organization with the goal to produce films and TV that empower women.

The films they plan to develop will be by and about women. We Do It Together is scheduled to announce the first film in May at the Cannes Film Festival and the organization will participate at the United Nations' Third Annual Power of Collaboration Global Summit on February 29th.

Recently, many in the industry have spoken out about Hollywood's gender bias, including Jennifer Lawrence who wrote about wage inequality last October. Jessica Jones' showrunner Melissa Rosenberg addressed the limiting roles available to women. "This has always been my goal across my painfully long career," Rosenberg told Rolling Stone when asked if changing the way women have been represented in superhero stories was part of her mission. "Just the frustration year in and year out, show after show, of watching these one-dimensional, uninteresting roles for women that are so unrepresentative of who we are.

"Apparently the only people who can have dark, flawed, interesting characters are white men. When will it be time for women to play these roles? When can we show women as human beings like anyone else?," she continued. "But that's the history of television: women are wives, or the sassy cop — they're the Madonna or the whore. Pick one, that's all you get. But that's been changing over the last few years."

According to The Women's Media Center, at this year's Oscars, women only represent 22 percent of non-acting nominees, which includes producers, writers, directors, and cinematographers. The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences who govern the Oscars has recently voted to make changes to its membership, which includes doubling its number of women and minorities by 2020.

"Film has always possessed the power to defy convention and change hearts and minds, and this power and potential must be harnessed to challenge the current archaic norms related to women within the entertainment industry," We Do It Together founder and board member Chiara Tilesi told Variety. "We feel that the way to make this a reality is to give women from around the world a concrete way to express themselves and an on-going structure that will ensure that these stories will be financed and distributed."

'Broad City': Yasss Queens of the Stoned Age

The BFFs are back, and venturing into bolder, 'Broad'-er territory with their third season

BY ROB SHEFFIELD February 23, 2016
Broad City; Season 3
Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer kick off the third season of Comedy Central's hit show 'Broad City.'Comedy Central

Broad City isn't just the funniest comedy on TV — it's a way of life. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are true senseis for the rest of us. They might seem like just two New York stoner chicks who spend all their time talking dirty or vaping or pretending to be Lil Wayne. But they face life with their own "carpe daaay-umn" philosophy. These two broads are so into each other, their BFF chemistry can turn any ordinary nothing day into a world-pegging adventure. Part of their secret is how much they love giving compliments constantly; everywhere they go, it's the place to be, and they shower it all with praise. They don't just give compliments to each other ("You're my favorite little Jewie this side of St. Louie!") or even to strangers ("fierce shoulder pads ... date night?") but people who despise and insult them. When people try to cut Abbi and Ilana down to size, it doesn't work, because these two barely even notice — they just keep gushing with enthusiasm. They face the cold, cruel world with a "yass queen."

Abbi Jacobson Ilana Glazer Broad City

In the superb new season, the broads venture boldly into new areas we've never seen them before: the DMV, the organic-produce co-op, the boxing ring, extended jokes involving Phish. They also go places they've always been before — lounging on their beds at the end of another ordinary day, eating cold pizza, raving about how dope it all was and how lucky the world is to have them around raising hell. The whole cast thrives on their chemistry: Hannibal Buress as Ilana's long-suffering dentist boyfriend, Chris Gethard as her longer-than-long suffering boss, Nicole Drespel as her sufferinger-than-suffering co-worker. When a visitor at the office asks, "What do you do here?," Ilana doesn't hesitate: "Total transparency — I spent most of the day coloring in my tummy."

The third season has new guest-star faces like Alan Alda, Melissa Leo, Vanessa Williams and, astoundingly, Hillary Clinton, who clearly recognizes a pair of queens when she sees them. Abbi, after years of cleaning the toilets at the Soulstice gym, finally gets a chance to live out her dream of being a full-fledged trainer. Ilana, after years of living her dream by showing up at work "violently high" and making everyone's life a living hell, keeps getting better at that. Last season we encountered Ilana's bad-ass mom; this time we get to meet Abbi's dad and see childhood video footage of her from summer camp (looks like she was always that girl). They experiment with social media ("I haven't tweeted in twelve twinutes") and face off in the ring with their cool new boxing names: Abbi is "The Anxious Assassin," while Ilana is "The Jewnami." It might have originally seemed like a simple recipe — stoner-bro comedy with stoner sisters — but each season gets punchier and funnier.

They also venture into new areas emotionally — the episode where Abbi deals with her mega-competitive side at the Soulstice games goes right to the top of the all-time Broad City greatness charts. You know we're in weird new territory when Ilana can come on as the voice of maturity and wisdom, telling her, "You are all-caps ABBI right now — I need you to be case sensitive." It gets ugly. But Ilana knows how to put her BFF in a half nelson and soothingly talk her down: "Okay, Yankee Candle Store, vanilla bean, BB & B when it opens, 8 AM, just you and the employees." Yet even when they try to chill out to a regular human level, they're on their own level. Stay high, ladies.

Lita Ford on Lemmy, Bowie and the Time She Could Have Joined Led Zeppelin

Her new memoir, 'Living Like a Runaway,' tells all

BY SARAH GRANT February 25, 2016

Lita Ford

It's an Aerosmith morning for Lita Ford. "Pink, it's my fave-or-ite color," she sang in Steven Tyler's drawl over the phone. The 57-year-old singer/guitarist is reveling in all her favorite things these days, even 1997 hits. That's about the time she left the music industry to raise her sons on the remote British island territory, Turks and Caicos, about 600 miles southeast of Miami.

But Ford's exile was all but idyllic. In her new memoir Living Like a Runaway, Ford explains how a ubiquitous Grammy-nominated artist went from rocking out with Joan Jett in the Runaways and duetting with Ozzy Osbourne on a Top 10 hit to utter isolation. Ford might not have made it back at all if it wasn't for a chance encounter with her hair metal counterpart, Dee Snider, who visited the islands on a family vacation. The "Kiss Me Deadly" singer, who is touring with Halestorm this summer, spoke with Rolling Stone about living with the erratic Runaways creator Kim Fowley, her tumultuous relationship with Tony Iommi and the time Robert Plant asked her to replace John Paul Jones in 1975.

Hair metal wasn't exactly a welcoming genre for female musicians and life on the Sunset Strip is portrayed as a boys' club. How do you reflect on that period of your life?
I was pretty oblivious to the fact that I didn't have a penis between my legs. It never dawned on me. All I knew is that I had fingers and I had the lust for hard rock. I wanted to play it and that's what I went by. I never thought, "Oh, I'm not a dude and chicks don't do this." A lot of people in the industry thought it was wrong and didn't want to accept the fact they were producing a female artist. Even some of my bandmates I had trouble with. They would think, "If she can do it then I can do it." They'd come back a few years later and say, "Do you still need a guitarist?"

Taylor Swift at the Grammy Awards about men in the industry taking credit for her work. Does that ring true for you?
All the time. Mostly in the earlier stages of my solo career, during my first solo album, Out For Blood. As things went on, it seemed to get better. … The only people that accepted me as a musician was other musicians. People like Edward Van Halen, Billy Sheehan — true musicians like them accepted me.

What did you learn from working with Runaways manager Kim Fowley?
Kim Fowley was a huge influence. The girls can bag on Kim all they want but he really showed us how to have our own individual personalities [on stage] and how to have our own musical styles. He said, "Go ahead and copy your peers and heroes, but you can't be them — you have to be yourself." And he had to scrape, scratch and grovel for his own life growing up. He had his little Kim-isms like, "Let's do the dog dance," which meant lets go out and rock. Without Kim, there may not have been a Joan Jett. There may not have been a Lita Ford.

Your former Runaways bandmate Jackie "Fox" Fuchs recently came forward about Fowley allegedly raping her at a party while Joan Jett and Cherie Currie watched. Do you remember any talk of Fowley's behavior back then?
No, not that I heard. Honestly, Joan, Cherie and I did not really hang out together even though we were in the same band. I'm assuming things went on that I didn't know about. Jackie was one person I'd hang out with because the other girls didn't want to be around her. I would room with her and got to know her pretty well. She never said anything about Kim Fowley touching her like that. But I know for a fact that girls who are raped or molested are afraid to mention it in front of the abuser. If the abuser is put in jail or dead, like Kim Fowley, then they feel safe and feel that they can mention what happened. I think that's what happened with Jackie. Now that Kim passed she felt like she needed to speak out. A lot of people are like, "Why would she speak out now that he can't defend himself?" And it's because, I would assume, she was scared.

What was your reaction when you read her statement?
I wasn't surprised. Then again, is it really true? I don't know.

You almost left the Runaways early on after finding out that three-fifths of the band was gay or bisexual.
I didn't know what it was and I was 15. It freaked me out. I was completely ignorant. I don't even think my parents knew what being gay was. A long time after [the Runaways], my mother rented video from Blockbuster and it was porno and she didn't know it. So she brings it home to watch with her girlfriends and it's two guys getting it on. So she calls me up and explains it's not the movie she wanted, but it's two men having sex, and I said, 'Yeah?' And she said, 'Do they really do that?' I said, 'Yes, mom, they do.'

The Runaways

Runaways drummer Sandy West seemed like your compatriot. Were you in touch with her before she died?
I was. Sandy and I had some problems and I didn't talk to her for a while. All of a sudden I got a phone call from her and she was really sick, crying, and said, 'I'm going to die.' She said she'd been given three years to live and I knew by the tone of her voice it was not three years. She passed literally three months after that phone call. If she had told me the truth, I would have gotten on a plane to see her. But at least we got on the phone and said our goodbyes, said I love you. I spoke with Joan on the phone after Sandy passed. We really had nothing to say to each other, just tears. Our Runaways days are long gone and our friendship will never be what it was. She's surrounded with very odd people, I've got to say. I think the president of the United States would be easier to get to.

Around 1999 there was talk of a Runaways reunion and Currie kind of blamed you for stifling it. Why were you opposed to a reunion then as opposed to now?
Joan got on the phone and instantly I wanted to hang up. It was just wrong, bad timing. Grunge was in full force — no one cared about the Runaways back then — they didn't want to hear about it. Now, I think the Runaways would be huge again.

You wrote about several other famous musicians who just recently died like Lemmy Kilmister who cowrote one of your biggest songs "Can't Catch Me" after a drug-fueled night at the Rainbow. Were you close to him before he died?
I was. My bass player Marty O'Brien and I had been invited to perform a Motörhead song at a party for Lemmy, which was about a week before his passing. He looked frail. I don't want to remember him like that, because that's not the Lemmy I knew. Cancer does terrible things to people. But he went happy. Lemmy lived the way he wanted to live. He did what the hell he wanted to do. He was there a week prior to his passing because he didn't want to lie in a hospital bed, instead he said let's go rock out. It made him feel better.

And your mother had an encounter with David Bowie?
Isn't that funny? My father had passed away and she was alone, so I often took her on the road with me. At this awards show in New York City she was bored when I was getting my hair and makeup done. So she said, I'll go look around and she disappeared. When I was done, I found her on the couch next to David Bowie. Honestly, Bowie in a weird way reminded her of my father. My father was this little British gentleman dressed nice with slicked back hair and spoke with a thick cockney accent. I think when she saw David, she saw my father.

Did you ever tell John Paul Jones about the time Plant asked you to play bass in Led Zeppelin in 1975?
No [laughs]. I didn't take [Plant] seriously. I thought, "You're going to replace one of my favorite bass players on the planet with a 17-year-old girl? Are you drunk?" And I walked away! I took it as a compliment, hugged him and we talked about music for a while.

It was risky to detail the high-profile trysts you had with people like Jon Bon Jovi, Eddie Van Halen and Nikki Sixx. There's a double standard that women can't be respected musicians and date musicians at the same time.
I didn't think like that. I was just surrounded by rock stars. It's like if you work at a bank and end up dating a bank teller. I was in a rock band and ended up dating rockers. Plus, none of us were married then. We were free spirits.

You wrote that Sharon Osbourne suspected you slept with her husband, Ozzy, the night you wrote "Close My Eyes Forever" together in 1987.
I'm guessing that's what she thought. We haven't spoken since then. I know at the time she was managing me, Ozzy had a lot of drug issues. He was at his worst. He was messing around and doing things he shouldn't have been doing as a married man. I can see why Sharon would think I was one of those girls. But I would never have done that to Sharon. I loved her as a human being and as a manager.

There's a myth that goes along with "Close My Eyes Forever" that Sharon locked you and Ozzy in a room and said "Don't come out until you have a hit!" Do you have any idea where that came from?
No. What happened is I was in the studio with Mike Chapman working on the Lita album. Ozzy and Sharon came to say hello and bring me a housewarming gift — a life-sized duplicate stuffed animal of Koko the gorilla from the San Francisco Zoo. Sharon walks in with this gorilla with Ozzy, I took a break and we started playing pool. Sharon got bored and left without Ozzy. Off to the side of the studio was a room with keyboards and guitars and we went in the room, started jamming and we had written "Close My Eyes" by the time the sun was coming up.

You wrote a lot about how deceptive rock stars can be, particularly Ozzy's Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi. You allege that he physically abused you during your engagement. Did he ever reach out to atone for what he did?
No. We actually reached out [to Iommi] before we released the book and he never responded. We haven't spoken since those days.

Lita Ford; Gibson SG
Lita Ford, 1977 Michael Ochs Archives/Getty

One of your first guitars was a chocolate Gibson SG, because you thought it was the one Iommi played. A decade later, you had to teach him his own riffs because he was too high to remember them. What was that like?
It leaves you bitter. It hurt me to discover that this person I thought was a god could be so fucked up and so mean. He wasn't the person who I fell in love with or the person I had worshipped. Still today, I worship the musician because of what I remember about him, his guitar playing. I forget the rest. He's probably totally clean and sober now. Back then there were just a lot of drugs flying around. It was almost like being with Elvis Presley — he could pick up the phone and have four doctors at his doorstep. He would get jars and jars of pills and cocaine on a daily basis.

The abuse didn't start right away. The punch in the eye on the airplane was the first actual hit I took from him. He waited for a place where I couldn't get away. I didn't think he would do it again. I thought maybe it was the drugs, maybe he took something that would make him fly off the handle and once the drugs wore off it, it would be okay. I went to my mother and said I had a friend who'd been hit by her boyfriend. She said in her thick Italian accent, "Lita, he do it once, he do it again" and she was right. He did it again and that's when I took all my stuff and the ring he gave me and went to a pawn shop.

You're back working with some of your pals from the Eighties on your new album, Time Capsule. You can hear the influence of songs like "Kiss Me Deadly" on Taylor Swifts' 1989, one of the the biggest albums of 2015. Why do you think the Eighties are having such a comeback now?
It just feels like the right time. People that lived the Eighties are getting older and they miss it. Now there are teenagers saying, "I wish I was there for that." Time Capsule isn't something I recently wrote — it's a piece of the Eighties and a lot of musicians from the era contributed like Gene Simmons, Dave Navarro, Robin Zander, Jeff Scott Soto, Rick Nielsen and Billy Sheehan.

Have you heard the Hollywood Vampires?
That is so cool. I haven't heard the album yet, but that is just so badass. I wrote a song a while back that I wanted to sing with Alice Cooper. Maybe that dream will come true.

I was actually just watching a clip of you and Alice Cooper presenting the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance to Slash and Duff for "Patience."
I talk to Slash every once in a while. We played the Whisky last January together and he wrote a piece for my new album.

Time Capsule?
No, the one after that — the album we're writing right now.

You're already working on your next album?
[Laughs.] Yes. We're still in the early stages. But when something hits you, you've got to grab it.

Presley’s Tour Dates in 1956

The music industry in 2016 is very different from the music industry in 1956, but one thing is still true: Touring is practically a must if you want to find new fans.

Elvis Presley’s career was just starting to soar in 1956. It was an incredibly busy year, both professionally and personally. Not only did he record and release some of his most legendary songs, but he also released his first album and made his first movie. He also purchased his first home.

Fans heard his music on the radio and watched his national television appearances, but Elvis also gained thousands of new fans by doing quite a bit of touring in 1956.

Elvis toured the country a few times over in 1956, but he also managed several shows at his hometown, Memphis. This show was at Russwood Park on July 4.

Including travels to New York City and Los Angeles to appear on television shows, Elvis made over 110 tour stops in 1956. That’s quite a lot – and not only that, he often performed several times in one day, performing, for example, in the afternoon and evenings (bringing the number of concerts he actually performed in 1956 up to over 200). That workload is almost unheard of today; most artists only perform once per tour stop.

The map below gives an idea of Elvis’ tour stops in 1956. Just based on traveling from city to city (not venue to venue) to perform at a concert, Elvis traveled roughly more than 41,000 miles (over 67,000 km) and visited 26 states as well as Washington D.C.

Here are a few more details about Elvis’ 1956 tour:

Elvis’ first performance in 1956 took place in St. Louis, Missouri on January 1. His final performance of 1956 was December 15 and was in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the Louisiana Hayride.

He often returned to Shreveport for Hayride performances between January and March. His last regular appearance on the Hayride was in March, followed by his final appearance there in December. At the end of the December show, Horace Logan first made the now legendary phrase, “Elvis has left the building.”

One of the most interesting places Elvis played in '56 was the University of Dayton fieldhouse. In this photo, he'd just arrived at 3:40 p.m. for the 2 p.m. show, having just driven in from Columbus, Ohio.

Elvis performed on a variety of stages in ’56. He performed everywhere from TV sets to auditoriums to high school gymnasiums to a university’s field house. The size of the towns varied, too, from major cities like Atlanta, Detroit and San Diego to small towns like Randolph, Mississippi (not far from Tupelo, where he was born).

Elvis returned to Tupelo for a concert on September 26, 1956, not long after he finished filming “Love Me Tender.”

Elvis had not yet earned his “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” title. In 1956, advertisements for this concerts across the country billed him as everything from “The Folk Music Fireball,” “RCA Victor’s Newest Singing Sensation,” “Country Music’s Mr. Rhythm” and “The King of Western Bop.”

One newspaper report described him as “the most talked-about new personality in the last 10 years of recorded music,” and one story on him was titled “Howling Hillbilly Success.”

Elvis performed in Miami, Florida on August 3, 1956.

He received a key to the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, following his August 12 performance.

A few of the songs Elvis performed on tour in 1956 include “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Baby Let’s Play House,” “Tutti Fruitti,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.”

8 Facts About The Punisher I Bet You Didn't Know

By Kory Glover ⋅ Posted on February 23rd, 2016 at 11:32am ⋅ Last edit on February 25th, 2016

The newest trailer for Season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil was dropped a few days ago and there is so much for fans to be excited for, including the return of the Devil from Hell's Kitchen to the small screen, the introduction of Marvel character Elektra, and even the anticipated of seeing if Wilson Fisk will be back for a bit part.

However, personally, I am most excited for the introduction of Marvel's most famous vigilante: Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher. The newest trailer that dropped is only part one of a two-part trailer and the first part hyped up the Punisher like crazy. The trailer appropriately showed the relationship and disagreement between Daredevil and Punisher, and Jon Bernthal looks like he can rise up as the defining actor to portray Frank Castle.

So, to honor the Marvel Cinematic Universe's long anticipated introduction to the Punisher, here are the 10 facts about Punisher that you probably did not know.

1. The Punisher's real name is not Frank Castle

Most fans know the Punisher by his name Frank Castle but what you might not know is that he was actually born with the name Francis Castiglione. While under this name, he studied to become a priest but soon realized that he was unable to forgive people for their sins. Filled with hatred and rage, he soon dropped his ambitions to join the priesthood and joined the Marine Corps to enter the Vietnam War.

2. The Punisher was originally an enemy of Spider-Man

The Punisher was first introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #129 where he was hired by supervillain Miles Warren a.k.a. The Jackal to assassinate Spider-Man for the murder of Spider-Man's archenemy, Norman Osborn. Punisher was described as a bloodthirsty vigilante who had no remorse ending the lives of small time crooks and gangsters which was something that most superheroes were strongly against. J. Jonah Jameson even once called Punisher the most newsworthy thing to happen to New York since Boss Tweed... whatever or whoever that is.

3. The Punisher once killed the entire Marvel Universe

Garth Ennis is known as a Punisher veteran who has written some of the greatest Punisher stories of all time including 'Welcome Back Frank,' 'PunisherMAX' and the fan favorite 'Punisher: Born.' However, before all that, Garth wrote a single comic one-shot called 'Punisher kills the Marvel Universe' that wasn't well received by both fans and critics. The one-shot was an alternate story that showed Frank Castle's family being killed in the middle of a brawl between the Avengers, X-Men, and assorted aliens. The superheroes are surprisingly unapologetic about this and Frank immediately executes a bunch of them including Cyclops, Hawkeye and Shadowcat.

Frank then goes on a rampage, killing a bunch of heroes and villains including Spider-Man, Venom, Doctor Doom, Wolverine, Captain America, Fantastic Four, and some others. After his rampage, Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil tries to stop him one on one but gets killed in the process. Frank then turns the club on himself and ends the comic with his suicide.

4. The Punisher was originally going to be called 'The Assassin'

Back in the development process of the Punisher, creator Gerry Conway had the idea to call the character 'The Assassin.' However, Editorial decided that name was too negative and too evil a name for an antihero, so Marvel legend Stan Lee suggested the name 'Punisher' which was more well received. Stan Lee got that name because he used it for another early robot character that belonged to Galactus.

5. The Punisher was given plastic surgery to become black

During a run in prison, Punisher's archenemy Jigsaw cuts up Punisher's face really bad, so required medical attention. He wanted to be unrecognizable by his enemies so the doctor gave him the reverse Michael Jackson. The story was meant to show what minorities have to go through on a daily basis, this shows a lot when Frank is pulled over by police and treated very poorly. He soon also teamed up with Luke Cage because... he was the only other black superhero Marvel had at the time.

6. The Punisher was based on a character from a 1960s novel series

You're probably asking yourself; where did the writers and creators of Punisher get the idea for such a revenge driven vigilante? Well, from an old 1960s novel series called 'The Executioner' that followed a man named Matt Bolan who starts a one man war against the mafia after they caused the death of his family. Sound familiar? Fun fact: Both Matt Bolan and Frank Castle are both Vietnam veterans.

7. The Punisher was once resurrected from death to become an Angel of Death

This is what most Punisher fans called the lowest point for the skull-shirted vigilante. Yes, even lower than meeting Archie or turning into a Frankenstein monster. After committing suicide, Frank is resurrected as an angel with red eyes and a sigil on his forehead. He wields two spiked machine guns that shoot lasers that he uses to murder small time crooks and villains. Yep, Frank basically turned into God's personal hitman and it's about as dumb as you can imagine.

8. The Punisher is a fan of Captain America

Every Punisher fan knows that Frank Castle usually has a distaste for most superheroes because of their inability to get the job done. However, Punisher seems to have a bit of a soft spot for the shield-wielding solider, Captain America, who Frank actually believes to be a real hero. In the Civil War comics, the Punisher and Captain America are at odd ends when Punisher executes known criminals Goldbug and Plunderer. Captain America loses it and starts mercilessly beating Frank into a bloody mess. When Cap tells Frank to fight back, Frank only says one thing to Cap: "Not against you." After Civil War, Frank even made alterations to his costume in homage to his hero.

8 New Shows You Will Not Want To Miss: Part 1

By Beth Boone ⋅ Posted on February 23rd, 2016 at 7:11pm ⋅ Last edit on February 25th, 2016

The new year has already brought us a handful of promising new TV shows, fromShades Of Blue (NBC), to Legends Of Tomorrow (The CW), to Outsiders (WGN), along with many in between, and it looks like we still have more coming our way. In part one of this two-part post, I will provide a brief description of four upcoming shows that will be premiering in March and April, so get your DVRs ready!

Take a look at the the first four below:

1. 'Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders'

The highly anticipated Criminal Minds spinoff series follows the International Response Unit of the FBI, specializing in crimes against American tourists traveling abroad. The team will consist of the unit chief (Gary Sinise from CSI: NY), a bilingual cultural anthropologist (Alana De La Garza from Forever), a tech analyst (Tyler James Williams from The Walking Dead), a medical examiner (Annie Funke from The Intern) and an ex-military profiler (Daniel Henney from X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Introduced to Criminal Minds fans in a preliminary crossover-event episode, Beyond Borders has already proven itself to be more desirable than the previous Criminal Minds spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, which failed to live up to it's predecessor. The team will likely partner with the Behavioral Analysis Unit frequently, or at least we can hope.

Premieres March 16 at 10/9c on CBS.

2. 'Damien'

Horror fans will undoubtedly tune in to see how the TV sequel to 1976's The Omen will honor the classic film. It will shadow an adult Damien Thorn, who has grown up oblivious to his true identity. As an adult, Damien becomes more aware of the devil's control over him and how it influenced his sinister past. The Anti-Christ is played by Bradley James (iZombie) and is joined by Barbara Hershey (Insidious), David Meunier (Justified) and Omid Abtahi (Argo). The series will consist of 10 episodes with the possibility of additional episodes being added, depending on the success of the initial run.

Premieres March 7 at 10/9c on A&E.

3. 'Containment'

With the popularity of doomsday theories and our culture's current obsession with an impending apocalypse, it's no wonder that shows like The Walking Dead and its sister series Fear The Walking Dead are in demand. The CW is rising to the occasion and releasing a series set in the midst of a deadly epidemic. Unlike The Walking Dead, this is a mysterious virus that kills its host for good. Taking place in the busy streets of Atlanta, Containment follows individuals that are separated from their friends and loved ones due to a citywide quarantine. Living in isolation and fear, people start to question the government's involvement, becoming increasingly paranoid while society around them begins to crumble. The series will star Chris Wood (The Vampire Diaries), David Gyasi (Interstellar) and Claudia Black (The Originals) among many others.

Premieres April 19 on The CW.

4. 'Underground'

WGN America has certainly made a name for itself with the success of wildly original shows like Salem, Manhattan and Outsiders. The network embraces topics that are typically avoided on television and its new show Underground is no exception. The series addresses a dark period of American history (slavery) but chooses to focus its attention on the strength and courage of African-American slaves and the abolitionists who fought back against injustice. Set in 1857 Georgia, Underground follows a group of slaves who devise a plan for escape, gaining unexpected allies who aid them as they advance toward freedom. The period piece will star Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood), Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) and Alano Miller (Jane The Virgin). With music star John Legend as an executive producer, it's possible that we might experience powerful, original music to accompany the show.

Premieres March 9 at 10/9c on WGN America.

5. Of Kings and Prophets

There has been an increasing interest in biblical dramas in recent years, leading to the release of movies like Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Noah, along with the miniseries event, The Bible. While they had some biblical inaccuracies, they did use characters directly from the bible as their main focus, and gave the stories new life. ABC will be debuting their new show Of Kings and Prophets next month, and so far it looks like it will be the biblical equivalent of Game of Thrones, without the nudity. Following King Saul, the shepherd David, and the prophet Samuel, the series will focus on King Saul fighting to maintain his kingdom from outside threats, while facing the ramifications of ignoring God's warning. The series will likely attract viewers who would not usually be interested in bible related material, due to the raw, powerful storyline, and subsequent action. The series will star Maisie Richardson-Sellers (The Originals), Ray Winstone (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Olly Rix (The Musketeers), and Jeanine Mason (Bunheads). Historical movies and television shows have been on the rise, and I think this one will aim to please.

Haaz Sleiman as Jonathan, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Michal, Simone Kessell as Queen Ahinoam, Ray Winstone as King Saul, Jeanine Mason as Merav, James Floyd as Ishbaal, of Kings and Prophets

Premieres March 8th 10/ 9c on ABC

Stephen King's 'The Mist' Is Coming To TV

By Tommy DePaoli ⋅ Posted on February 25th, 2016 at 1:10pm

Television is about to get a lot more mist-erious.

According to Variety, Spike is drawing inspiration from Stephen King's horrifying tale The Mist. The network has ordered a pilot with the same name as its first-ever scripted drama.

Dimension Television is developing the series, which tells the story of an unexpected mist that rolls into a sleepy town, creating all kinds of chaos.

Christian Torpe (who created the phenomenal Danish show Rita) will be executive producing, but the cast and rest of the filmmakers are still up in the air.

Sharon Levy, Spike's Executive Vice President of Original Series, released a statement teasing the network's excitement about this new endeavor.

We are thrilled to join forces with the incredibly creative Christian Torpe and Dimension Films to develop Stephen King’s enthralling novella to a compelling series unlike anything else on television.

The Mist was previously adapted as a movie in 2007, and it was sufficiently anxiety inducing to warrant a TV show.

The Kaiju Are Back: 'Pacific Rim 2' Is Coming

By Genevieve Van Voorhis ⋅ Posted on February 24th, 2016 at 6:58am

The apocalypse is back on. Director of the 2013 sci-fi thriller Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro, has confirmed via Twitter that Pacific Rim 2 is in the works.

Check out this clip below from the original Pacific Rim.

In the first Pacific Rim, giant monsters called the Kaiju started attacking Earth, sparking a massive war that would threaten all mankind. Humans invented enormous robots called Jaegers to try and combat the Kaiju, and ultimately the fate of the universe fell in the hands of two unlikely heroes: Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but it's likely that Hunnam and Kikuchi will return for Pacific Rim 2. And del Toro has mentioned that maybe Maisie Williams (Game Of Thrones) might join the cast! Let's hope she does — Arya Stark could kick the Kaiju's asses. Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil and Spartacus) will be directing.

Elektra Enters The Fray In New Motion Poster For 'Daredevil,' Season 2

By Tommy DePaoli ⋅ Posted on February 24th, 2016 at 1:29pm

There's less than a month until Daredevil returns to our streaming-optimized screens, so Netflix is treating us to stunning motion posters ahead of March 18's binge-heavy weekend.

We've already seen some of the characters, but we've finally been properly introduced to the lethal lady who's essential to Matt Murdock's past and present: Elektra Natchios.

Elektra Won't Let Matt Murdock Escape The Sins Of His Past

Best of all: pants! No glorified ribbons comprising this Elektra's ensemble. I'll admit that I hope this is a starter outfit since it's essentially jeans and a sleeveless top, but I still like the overall impression. Elodie Yung's Elektra looks equal parts capable and beautiful; the perfect incarnation of a beloved character who's been done so dirty in the past.

The Alluring Assassin Comes On The Heels Of Another New Addition To Season 2

Daredevil's official Twitter page released this promo earlier this week, but there's no harm in taking a second look. Well, no harm for us anyway. Matt Murdock looks like he'll be seeing some serious suffering from Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle.

Karen Page Will Be Grappling With Her Decisions From The First Season

Hopefully, we'll learn more about Karen's mysterious past, and I'm still pulling for a pairing with Froggy (sorry Murdock, I want you with Claire).

Jump start! Kelly Rowland gets motors running in a chic jumpsuit at Cadillac's Oscar Pre-Party

Ladies and gentleman, start your engines.

Kelly Rowland showed reserved rather than revealing can sometimes be the sexiest look of all at Cadillac's Oscar Pre-Party.

The 35-year-old singer sizzled on the black carpet at the famed Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, California, on Thursday night.

The former Destiny's Child star wowed in a jumpsuit as she led a star-studded pack at the Pre-Academy Awards celebration.

Perhaps taking inspiration from Cadillac's refinement over flashiness style sensibilities, Kelly stepped out in the restrained and sleek suit-like jumpsuit.

The chic outfit's short sleeves ensured the singer could show off her impressively toned arms but kept the rest of her physique concealed.

Also taking a leaf out of the men's tailoring handbook, was Allison Janney, who wore a midnight blue suit with a black satin lapel on the jacket which she wore over a black silk top.

Taking a different approach, and heating up the carpet while doing so, was Kate Walsh, who wore a skintight dress.

So tight was the dress in fact, that the star revealed the zipper broke as she was getting ready and she had to be sewn into the dress by her style team.

Posting a picture of the stylists frantically stitching the dress up, Kate said on Instagram: '#whenthezipperbreaks these angels sewed me into my dress for the #cadillacoscars party...& now I will go home to cut myself out of it #glamour.'

But all that effort was worth it as the 48-year-old look stunning in the white and pale purple print dress.

The keen-length frock encased her slim physique while highlighting her curves in all the right places thanks to a deep V neckline.

And it was not just the ladies looking their best, Modern Family stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell showed just how versatile a suit can be, wearing a blue and grey ensemble respectively.

Fiona Apple and Andrew Bird Share Semi-Sweet, Semi-Angry, Semi-“Unhinged” Duet

No matter what Fiona Apple does, the emotional drive will never be easy to pin down. Especially on her most recent album, The Idler Wheel, the stripped-down instrumentation highlighted the musician’s knack for frenetically flitting between exuberance, frustration, ire and desire, often in the same lines.

Even when she’s backing up a more folksy, whistling, singsongy singer like Andrew Bird , she brings a wonderfully hard edge to the track. In their just released collaboration for Bird’s upcoming album Are You Serious, titled “Left Handed Kisses,” the temptation to fall into duet-ed sweetness is always kept in check by a simultaneous tension or suddenly angry tone. It keeps the collaboration highly dynamic, with Bird singing about writing love songs while Apple indicts them for being “backhanded.”

Andrew Bird and Fiona Apple Join for

Though his music has always boasted a completely pleasant sound and his voice has always been tender and lulling, he’s lyrically often avoided such emotional straightforwardness. He said in a press release:

My inclination was to write a song about why I can’t write a simple love song. The song began as an internal dialogue. At first it was just my voice. Then another voice came creeping in and I thought “this should be a duet if I can find the right person.” I needed to find someone really indicting. She was totally committed. The session was a long whiskey-fueled night – unhinged, for sure. All worth it, of course. I can’t write simple love songs. People are complex.

The album will be released on April 1. Listen to the track:

KT Tunstall Signs With Caroline Records & Cast Management; New EP Due In June

Jeff Castelaz and KT Tunstall
COURTESY PHOTO

Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, best known for her singles “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See,” has signed on with Caroline Records and Jeff Castelaz’s Cast Management.

The singer’s new EP Golden State is due in June and will be the first release of the revived Capitol imprint Caroline -- which is now run by Harvest’s Piero Giramonti and Jacqueline Saturn -- with an album to follow in the fall. Tunstall has sold 1.7 million albums and 4.2 million tracks in the U.S. since the 2004 release of her debut album, Eye to the Telescope.

The moves are the latest manifestation of a new phase for the singer, who moved from London to Los Angeles in 2014.

“I was between managers for a year and a half,” Tunstall tellsBillboard, “and the crunch time was getting pretty close. But I remembered an email from my friend Marty Diamond [East Coast head of music for Paradigm Talent Agency], who is sort of known for his incredibly short and helpful emails, and it just said ‘Call Jeff Castelaz’ with a number, and nothing else. So I called Jeff in November, and our first phone call lasted two and a half hours and the next was three and a half hours, and then I hired him.”

Tunstall says the challenges of that period are reflected in the album, which was produced by longtime Castelaz client Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck, Silversun Pickups, although both insist he was entirely Tunstall’s choice).“The changes and moving to L.A. were all very freeing, but like any big change, it was sometimes difficult, too,” Tunstall says. “I wanted to write a record that is really about connecting people to the feeling that everybody has to go through this sort of sh--, no one is immune from it, but at the end of the day, ‘Well done’ to us for surviving it. So it’s a celebratory record that’s steeped in some life wisdom that I haven’t had in the past. I would say it’s my most un-self-conscious and joyful record. I’m happier than I’ve ever been.”

While Tunstall is signed to Virgin U.K., finding a place for her music in the U.S. Universal operation was Castelaz’s task. “I played the music for Piero, a longtime friend of mine -- he was president of Dangerbird Records when I ran it. He listened to the demo and stopped it after a few songs and said, ‘How would you like it if we relaunched Caroline Records around KT?’”

"Since Jacqueline and I took over the reins at Caroline, it has been part of our vision to relaunch Caroline Records as an integral part of the strategy,” Giramonti says. “Jeff played us the KT tracks, and I thought this would be a great first signing under our supervision of Caroline Records."

Castelaz has been focusing on Cast Management and his charitable efforts since September 2015, when he stepped down as president of Elektra Records after three years in the role. “It’s been everything that I hoped it would be,” he says of the management company. “I’ve had a steady stream of potential clients and now I’m at the point where I can’t take anyone else on. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful because Warner Music were wonderful to me, but running a major label showed me that what I really want is to be an artist manager.”

Apart from Tunstall and Hoffer, his clients include producer/musician Justin Meldal-Johnsen (who co-wrote and co-produced the forthcoming M83 album) and new charge Eliot James (Kaiser Chiefs, Two Door Cinema Club and Noah & the Whale) as well as longtime clients the Dropkick Murphys, with new signees to be announced soon.

It seems that after Alejandro Fernandez followed in the footsteps of his famous dad -- ranchera icon Vicente Fernandez -- his daughter Camila is next in line.

The 18-year-old is featured in the just-released “El Ciclo Sin Fin” (the Spanish language version of “The Circle of Life”) alongside her famous dad. The track will be featured on the upcoming album We Love Disney Latino, which will feature 20 Spanish-language versions of Disney tracks performed by different acts.

Although Camila is a student at Berklee College of Music and has performed with her dad before, this is her formal recording debut.

‘Iron Fist’ Casts ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Finn Jones as Danny Rand

Kevin Fitzpatrick | a day ago
Marvel / HBO

Of all Marvel’s Netflix Defenders, Iron Fist has proved the most opaque after Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, mired in casting controversy and seemingly delayed in production. Now, our live-action Daniel Rand has finally been cast, as Iron Fist sets Game of Thrones alum Finn Jones for the final Defender role, starting production in the near future.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news, without comment from Marvel or Netflix as of yet. Jones is best remembered for his role as Ser Loras Tyrell in multiple Game of Thrones seasons to date.

Meanwhile, Marvel maintains it hasn’t decided between scheduling Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Jessica Jones Season 2 or possibly others, while Netflix previously expressed inclination to premiere only two Marvel series per year. Scott Buck will showrun Iron Fist, while recent reports suggested Jessica Jones writer Scott Reynolds will also have a hand on the creative side.

Iron Fist will likely move forward on production in the coming weeks and months, but was Finn Jones the right choice to finally put their glowing hand to good use? What should we expect from the final Defenders chapter, before the big teamup series starts assembling?
