It's not called "Blues music and all of its derivatives Hall of Fame".

The idea is fairly simple:

Getting in is a form of recognition given mainly to rock musicians. They are also going to let in a limited number of artists from other genres that can be considered "close enough" to rock or that have been influential in the development of rock music. They do that because they don't want to be seen as complete dicks and maybe, heaven forbid, some of the people responsible for the nominations even listen to soul stuff.

Of course it's cliqueish. It's also a terribly dated idea that some sort of "dad rock" is the highest form of popular music and everything else is secondary to it. lol

If we're going that route, Rock & Roll was over by the early 1960s. Rock & Roll are your Chuck Berrys, Elvis, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, those guys. This is really the Popular Music of America Hall of Fame, but Rock & Roll sounds so much better.

There are two ways to use that term. You can use it to make a distinction between the early forms and the later forms, like you're doing above. But really, "rock" is just short for "rock'n'roll", and both terms were used interchangeably for decades.

The distinction you're favouring is useful and it makes perfect sense to use it that way, but it's not the only way it can be used. I don't think the distinction was that common even when the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" was started, which should explain the name.

Yes, I think a wider variety of artists deserve this type of recognition, but that's clearly not what the hall itself is about. It's based on the old-fashioned idea that music performed by rock bands is the real deal and the rest is secondary.

If it was just a Rock Band thing, why did the first inductees include Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fats Domino and James Brown among others?
The first class showed you what type of group this would be.

Rock music is your Doors, Led Zepp, Pink Floyd those guys. I think people confuse that with Rock & Roll.

But what about songs that mention rock n roll like:

.

Bob Seger ~ Old Time Rock & Roll / Rock And Roll Never Forgets

Kiss ~ Rock & Roll All Nite

Led Zeppelin ~ Rock And Roll

Loggins & Messina ~ Your Mama Don't Dance

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Also, there should be a rejection limit. If an artist has been rejected 3x than they should either:

1. Automatically get in if they are nominated for a fourth time.

OR

2. Simply not be eligible for a nomination anymore after an x amount of years.

There is no point to constantly nominate an act every year and not induct them. Chic has been rejected 10 times and that is absolutely ridiculous. If they are going to induct them than they need to do it next year, otherwise they need to stop nominating them. Its pretty disrespectful and a waste of time if they are going to nominate just to reject them again and again and again.

Wow, 10 times? I didn't know that! What a shame that is...

Here's a note to all you JanFans out there: if you want to get Janet Jackson into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame next year, you got to get your views seen as well as heard. Let me explain:

You're probably wondering how Cheap Trick got into the RRHoF this year over Janet and/or other artists. Granted, Cheap Trick was a popular band back in the day, and most people recognize them for their hit singles "I Want You To Want Me", "Surrender", "Dream Police", and their power ballad fron the late 1980's, "The Flame". They were great at power pop and influenced a number of future bands, but were they really that much more influential then Janet or even NWA?

Well, they were quite influential to their hometown fans, who happen to be living in Rockford, Illinois, which is also my hometown. And over the past year, every time I went to the mall or a local street festival, there were people asking for fans to sign petitions to get Cheap Trick into the RRHoF, and the local media did its part in getting the word out to its citizens. These fan groups did present over 100,000 signatures to the RRHof, and the staff said this was the first time they received such a massive amount of petitions to get an artist into the RRHoF. Did these petitions ultimately sway the voters into putting them into the RRHoF? We probably will never know for sure, but they didn't seem like a sure shoo-in to me.

So if you want to get Janet into the RRHoF, now would be the time to start your petition drives.

I think Cheap Trick is a kickass rock band.I remember my older sister was a diehard fan.She had their 'Live At Budokan' album....she played it so much that even I knew all the words to those songs biggrin That's gotta be one of the greatest live albums ever!

Don't bother, the only way the general public can influence voting is with the Hall of Fame Nominee Fan Vote. Three of the Top Five in fan voting got inducted this year, including the top vote-receiver Chicago.

Other than the Nominee Fan Vote, the Hall will not allow inductions to turn into a popularity contest ... and for that I'm grateful.

Who had an influence, how many 1 hit wonders are in the Hall?

What influence did Percy Sledge have other than giving Michael Bolton a hit? razz lol A lot of acts lipsync in concert nowadays. Even classic rock acts like Roger Waters & Motley Crue have been rumored to lipsync parts of their shows and they don't dance. So that's a really big influence that Rob & Fab made. Milli Vanilli wasn't a one hit wonder anyway. Several of their songs went Top 10 or Top 40

Rob & Fab were frauds... the lip synching they were doing ...wasn't even them ! It was someone else singing...

Seems like Peter Cetera is the Peter Gabriel of Chicago in that he's not going to show up to the induction of the band. I wonder if the name Peter has something to do with it. lol
