I can see they were coming from a place of long term pain regarding Michael and oppression overall, but it's not a therapy topic and maybe worth discussing separately from this thread, and was upsetting people. It's all in the past now and it's safe to say all fans equally have good and bad and in between narratives of these eras in different contexts, and the reaction to his death gave a sampling of that too if one were to look back at the footage.

Michael Jackson’s estate explores Sony buyout | New York Post

Are the Jackson kids going to be a billion dollars richer this New Year?

The estate of the late Michael Jackson co-owns the world’s biggest music publisher, Sony/ATV, which spins off around $100 million in profit each year under the aegis of its popular chief executive, Martin Bandier.

The asset is being evaluated by its two owners to figure out who buys out whom.

Sony Corp. has hired investment bank Allen & Co. to work on valuing its portion of the lucrative asset. The Japan-headquartered consumer-electronics giant recently triggered an option to acquire the 50 percent stake owned by Jackson’s estate.

But Sony isn’t the only one coming up with a valuation. Jackson’s estate, repped by music lawyer John Branca, is also said to be talking about finding backers to buy out Sony. Most estimates put the Sony/ATV asset at around $2 billion to $2.5 billion.

The difficult challenge facing Branca is persuading the Jackson kids (Paris, Prince and Blanket) to forgo the giant check and double down and allow him to oversee the acquisition of the entire company with fresh backers.

Sources tell On the Money that probate courts would likely have to OK any decisions made on behalf of Jackson’s estate.

As if things couldn’t get more complicated, there’s the side issue of the EMI catalog, which is owned separately but managed by Sony/ATV. A change of control might trigger an exit for the owners of the catalog, who potentially could move somewhere else.

This is Brilliant. That is how you have to check adults when they chip away at your kids self-esteem. The arrogant prick of a reporter doesn't think he is doing anything wrong. But he is undermining Venus's confidence. Thank goodness Mr. Williams caught it.

I remember when pics around this time came out in the Ebony with MJ and ET on the cover. He looked so radiant. His photography team got it perfectly right. If anyone has slides from that issue please share.

To answer my own request. The original pics glowed.. and I remember the part about him wanting to marry Dianna Ross..

Remember those TDK cassettes? The world changed too fast.

Pop Culture Capsule — Michael Jackson 1982 Ebony Magazine Spotlight

I came across this while browsing the fantastic Google Books magazine archive, as I am wont to do. It’s a special on Michael Jackson from the December 1982 issue of Ebony. Jackson had just released his landmark Thriller album and had contributed the song “Someone in the Dark” to the storybook for the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The article is clearly from the age when M.J. could do no wrong, and the ugly rumors and innuendo that dogged his professional and personal lives had yet to surface. He was still simply Michael, beloved pop singer on the cusp of mega-stardom.

But what’s really fun — and a little sad — is to look at all the pictures, featuring Michael looking happy and rubbing elbows with the biggest names in entertainment at the time — Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Tatum O’Neal, Brooke Shields, Donna Summer, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, Sidney Poitier, Paul McCartney, and even Seals & Crofts. Oh yeah, and E.T.

before you were even born and even knew who Michael Jackson was, I had already been there and done that

before you were even born, the real version of Michaelmania had already taken place and went down in the history books

before you were even born, the Jackson 5 Christmas album had already became a classic 16 years prior at the least

before you were even born, they was showing the Wiz annuallly on local TV (before cable became what it is today)

before you were even born, Off The Wall was recognized and called the best, the quientessential r&b/soul album of all time

before you were born, Motown 25 went from a tribute to its owner to a celebratory moment for the ages where education took a backseat the very next day after it aired as principals and school teachers alike did not teach class just to talk about what we had witnessed

before you were even born, the greatest video of all time hadn't premiered, which led to a VHS release of the making of the greatest video of all time

before you were even born, school kids all across the land were standing in line practically hoping that our music teachers would allow us to sing Michael's part singing We Are The World, a song that went down in history where every single radio station across the country played the song simultaneously on the airwaves

all of this is just the tip of the iceberg

you don't even want to go there, not even close

Get the facts right and then u may have a chance

Have to agree with this. The best parts of Michael's career had already taken place before 1987. Many of Michael's current hard-core fans are from the Bad era onwards, but from Bad onwards it was a downwards spiral, unfortunately.

exactly

and when the question is asked why MJ fans during that time never, ever got into beef or arguments are dissension, and why the focus was really on the music and talent, there is never an answer given......there was no reason to get into an argument then

Michael became something that's more profound than being known as the "king of pop"

he became a national treasure, and had all the respect one could demand

There was no need to determine who was a so called real fan or not. We were simply fans. That was not even part of the verbage

his song Beat It was used as a national campaign to promote encourage teens and adults alike to not drink and drive

but I'm a leave this alone so nobody don't go whining to the moderators

I respectfully disagree, I actually enjoyed his music more as he got older and he wasn't scared to experiment with different sounds he didn't have the fear or well....rather less of the fear of being "marketable ". Probably why his 1995 album HIStory to me was what I needed fromhim. He became human on that album well to ME. But I respect your opinion though

I understand that lol, I personally just felt like Michael was more comfortable with being himself from 1994 and beyond you know? He was working 2x as hard without feeling like idk how to describe it but he didn't feel like a product anymore. Like everything he did felt caculated which isn't a bad thing I mean hey I get it. Ben was beautiful yes it wasn't my cup of tea but it's undeniably a masterpiece. Little Susie is a GORGEOUS song but that gave me nightmares. But back on the topic, I feel like after the 1993 scandal (I rarely address that BS) he felt like he wanted to say what was on his heart and followed his then wife Lisa's advice and made the record raw and just as universal as his other records and it worked. When he took the reigns of producing in I remember it was around Bad ish (don't quote me) he was REALLY going there. I'm not taking away from this genius I'm just saying my own personal opinion.

I just read the full text of that Ebony article again. Ebony is where MJ seems to express his humanity the best. All the coverage they gave him was so respectful and DECENT.

In a sense it really took me back. I can understand what Scorp is saying. I really do because I became a fan based on his talent and wholesomeness. But he choose his path and I can't lament it forever, especially now that he is not here. So I choose to honor and remember the good times. The magical good times - which were many - and to me extended right up to his passing.

So its Halloween tonight. My gym put on a haunted house and it really warmed my heart to see so many kids in MJ and Thriller gear. Every Halloween becomes "Thriller Night". Now that is cultural influence.
