Don Henley throwing shade

Ha. I'm not a huge fan but I can't say I know enough about Frank Ocean to call him talentless.

Is Henley right or is he just being an old curmudgeon?

Don Henley: Kanye West Is 'Arrogant,' Frank Ocean a 'Talentless Prick'
Eagles singer-songwriter says rapper "won't be president"
By Kory Grow October 1, 2015

Don Henley had strong words for Kanye West and Frank Ocean, calling the former "arrogant" and the latter a "talentless prick." Danny E. Martindale/Getty

A year after complaining about Frank Ocean sampling "Hotel California," Eagles singer and drummer Don Henley is still bitter. The R&B singer had used the entirety of the Eagles hit in his song, "American Wedding," on his 2011 mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra. "I didn't think he was cool," Henley told The Guardian in a new interview. "I thought he was a talentless little prick. And I still do."

Don Henley on 'Sloppy' Songwriting and Cultural Decay

Henley had previously asserted that he felt Ocean did not understand or respect intellectual property, a point he reiterated in the new interview. "Some of these young kids have grown up in a world that doesn't understand or respect copyright material or intellectual property," he complains. "They look at songs as interactive playthings."

The newspaper prodded Henley on by asking him if he'd feel differently if a bigger artist like Kanye West were to sample a song he'd written. "No, I'd be just as pissed off," Henley rejoined. "I don't like him, either."

The Eagle also scoffed at the rapper's humorous 2020 presidential run, which the rapper announced at the MTV Video Music Awards in August. Despite the fact that West's wife, Kim Kardashian, recently said on Ellen that he was "serious" and would "do his best" with campaigning, Henley shrugged the whole thing off and summoned more strong words for the rapper. "He won't be president," he says. "He's either incredibly arrogant or incredibly insecure, or some combination of the two."

Henley has been out promoting his new solo album, Cass County, which finds him reconnecting with his Texas roots and singing country. "It's incumbent on us to export something that has some quality to it, that reflects our culture in ways that are positive and meaningful," he recently told Rolling Stone Country. "In order to do that in country music, we have to go back to the country because this music originated with people who lived in rural America and lived authentic lives."

I MIGHT feel more empathy for Mr. Henley had he not forbade karaoke companies from using his songs.

I'm sure Frank's aloof personality didn't jibe with Henleys. As Frank pointed out he was never going to recieve a dime from that track. And he's also wrong. "American Wedding" is an awesome track!

Like it or not he is right, on the personal stuff I could care less, Kayne, is what he is, I gave up on him ages ago, straight up fool that distracts from any talent he has. The Frank Ocean thing, I get what Don is saying. on the whole property thing, no one gets it, its not yours to just use without asking and then releasing, yes it was a free mixtape but that still doesnt mean you can use other peoples shit, there is income from mixtapes sorry to say, knowing many artists that have done them, FREE is not so true, they often get money from the downloading sources and websites that get their traffic, and that is true. So making NO MONEY is BS Frank. The reason people always TAKE ISSUE when aritsts complain is that they look at them as RICH and why can't you just look the other way while I use your stuff. Sorry doesnt work that way.

This was when the fracas first broke.

So what he is RICH? also like i said he got paid for the MIXTAPE , its BS, artists get paid for mixtapes, they get it off the ads from the websites and the traffic, know many that do this, it may be free to you to download but they getting some revenue when that site gets hits. Why Sue the new guy? lame shit. I never side with sampling, especially when you don't ask and you just use it, makes no difference that you "made it free", or that Don is "rich", For the record DON got rich because he actually fought the fight for aritsts like Mr. Ocean for ownership LONG before PRINCE did and more effectively.

I like Frank but it's obvious he has that Millenial attitude.

But I'm still annoyed by Don for banning karaoke companies using his songs. I mean really Don? And they definitely get paid for that. It's a cultural thing now. Why would he have a problem with that?

A lot of people hate Don Henley, but I love what he has to say. If it were Prince saying and doing the shit Don has been saying and doing, you'd all be cheering him on. Don speaks the truth about Kanye and as far as Frank goes, I couldn't care less as I'm not a fan of his music and know very little of it.

All the sampling of songs from th 70s and 80s just proves most of today's "artists" have no talent and cannot create a song if their life depended on it. Especially the rappers. Kanye West will always be nothing more than a gay fish.

This is 100% true. Frank Ocean is ten years younger than Don Henley's composition "Hotel California" which has become a modern cultural staple by the time he heard it. Unfortunately, "American Wedding" wasn't just a version of "Hotel California"... the whole thing was sampled and retitled.

Frank was just having fun and it turned out to be a great record.

I understand the copyright issue but that's all it was.

Now I didn't know that ANY money was generated from mixtapes until lastdecember laid it out for me. But I still think it came from a more innocent place then people on here are alluding to, and I'm not much of a sampling supporter.

I'll concede that Frank's response was aloof at best, and I know from first hand experience that people don't play that, but who knows. Maybe he was giving what he was getting in that exchange.

Gun's pointing out Henley's hypocrisy, is spot on. I guess it takes a thief and an arrogant prick to recognize another. Mr. Henley the pot calling the kettle black, is laughable. Besides if you know anything about the Eagles, Frey and Henely appeared to be straight up 360 degree assholes. Again, laughable. For the record Gun, Henley's a Dem

I've liked some of Mr. West music. Kanye West is a deeply insecure man, I would've have thought age and some experience would've mellowed him out but... yep he's jerk.

Talent wise, yeah I agree with Henley. You listen to Ocean's" music" ( minus the lyrics) you hear that same fucking beat in Brown,Drake, Legend, Usher, Legend and the countless other folks on the Billboard at present. I can understand Henley's being protective of the music he actually wrote. wink If Ocean had any since of grace, he would've asked if he could sample, Henley's song.
