I lived through that era... it was just average new jack swing era style to me then and now...

I wouldn't call New Jack Swing average, it's just that everyone was trying to incorporate New Jack in their music once it reached prominence with Keith Sweat, Guy, Al B. Sure, and Bobby Brown, and Johnny Kemp

but Sly Stone is an all time luminary and deserves to be viewed as such

To me the TOP new Jack acts were..

Teddy Riley/GUY, Bobby Brown, Al. B Sure & Keith Sweat.

Everybody else IMO just jumped on the bandwagon..

Kinda like the Neptunes craze in the early 00's.
