Tina Turner Heritage Days is this weekend in Brownsville

Sun 5:01 p.m. CDT September 23, 2015

Come celebrate the “Queen of Rock ‘n Roll” this weekend at the Tina Tuner Heritage Days in Brownsville.

Sonia Outlaw-Clark, director of Delta Heritage Center says she hopes the festival will “create a place where Tina Turner fans from all over the world are comfortable coming together to meet and celebrate their favorite artist.”

She also hopes fans will go home with the feeling that they have connected and made lasting friendships; and that coming to Brownsville and Nutbush will become an annual pilgrimage of sorts for them.

“Where better to have this happen than in Tina’s hometown,” Outlaw-Clark said.

The three day celebration begins Friday with an “Explore Brownsville” photo contest from 1 to 5 p.m. People will be able to pick up an “Explore Brownsville” passport at the Delta Heritage Center and when visiting select locations around Brownsville, snap a picture and post to Instagram for a chance to win prizes.

At 5 p.m. there will be a fan gathering. At 6:30 p.m. Billie Jean Teehee will perform. A native of Stilwell, Oklahoma, Teehee began singing as a little girl in church, fairs and talent shows, according to the Delta Heritage Center website. She won one of her first talent shows singing Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” Following that, karaoke will be held so that the audience can have their turn trying to give their best Tina impression. There will also be trivia and activities to test your Tina knowledge, the website said.

On Saturday, the Explore Brownsville photo contest will continue all day until 7 p.m.

At 9 a.m. people will be able to tour Nutbush, and learn where Turner grew up. The guided tour includes original location of Flagg Grove School, Woodlawn Church, former sites Tina lived in and more. Cost is $10 per person or people can purchase a ticked for a Saturday package for $30 which includes all Saturday activities.

Other activities include lunch with Rhonda Graam where one will be able to learn what it was like to work with Tina. Cost is $10 per person. At 3 p.m. people will be able to enjoy a guided tour of the MindField, which is a Brownsville landmark and a work in progress by artist Billy Tripp.

Starting at 7 p.m. there will be a concert at Turner’s former high school, Carver Gym. The concert will feature local talents, Achana Jarrett and Stacy Amrbose followed by Donovan Marcelle, a singer, performer and entertainer who has performed with Jennifer Hudson, Patti LaBelle and Tina Turner. Cost is $15.

On Sunday morning a farewell breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. followed by a concert by the Memphis Letter Carrier Band at 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Delta Heritage Center

Thanks for posting this! I love Tina Turner and appreciate the fact that she earned her retirement, but I have to admit - I miss her music and seeing her perform. I am soooo glad I lived in a time that witnessed her "comeback" in the 80's - anticipated her releases as she got older - and that I even saw her in concert, twice! When historians look back and realize what contributions she made to women's image in rock and music in general, and the music seen itself in an age of video and super-stars, it makes me happy to know she was not a "myth" - but a true LEGEND and I got to share some space with her on this earth.

I think it was the early 2000's when Tina said she was cast in a Movie to play a Shaman/Priestess. Did that ever happen? Did the Studio shelve the movie?

after some googling and all, i found the " /priestess" role you were refering to. although the priestess was not actually a "shaman."

here's the info:

Whatever Works

Whatever Works" is the second episode of Miami Vice'ssecond season. The episode premiered on October 4, 1985 and repeated on May 30, 1986.

Summary

Castillo consults with a Santeria priestess to solve a cop killing. Crockett teams with Izzy to get his Ferrari back from a police administrator.

Notes section:

  • The role of the Santerian priestess was reportedly offered to Tina Turner first, then to Eartha Kitt when Turner declined.

cool now, the mystery is solved ('cause i sure was curious to confirm the fact, and found it. biggrin )

Thanks for the link...So she turned it down...I think Tina & Diana did not go full-force into their acting careers because they could not get use to the "down-time"...The Acting World is just as challenging as The Singing World..Some would say more challenging...
