The Weeknd reminded me of a sad MJ when he sang live on the VMAs this summer, but not on record.

Sad like in sad mood or sad like pathetic or poor artist?

I meant sad mood! This thread dislikes The Weeknd more than I do.

He certainly can sing. Just listening to tracks like "Earned It" should prove it. His voice sounds somewhat strained occasionally, but for the most part he sounds good.

I do have a problem with the lyrics . The "MJ on drugs" thing isn't really working that well and there are far too many "bitches" in the lyrics. It's just ridiculous and I can't take what he sings about more seriously than some of the worst bullshit you see in IRC chatrooms and the like.

"I just fucked two bitches before I saw you"

Yeah, right. As if a guy with such low testosterone levels could even get it up on drugs.

Everybody can sing in the studio lol

And I absolutely HATE Earned It. It reminds me of someone...

You can edit the vocal tracks and choose the right takes, but no, you can't make someone sound the way The Weeknd does on his records without a suitable voice for it. His vocals are autotuned throughout and the records are drenched in excessive amounts of reverb / delay, so yeah, the end result does not sound that natural in the end. However, he kind of "pioneered" that vocal sound for modern R&B. I've understood the first recordings were done on a rather small budget and I think he and his producerer chums were being pretty creative with their approach.

btw, MJ sounded strained often too. It's just that he was an original and all those younger guys trying to sound like him are just, well, trying to sound like him. Compared to others I'd say The Weekend is a notch above them (JT, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown etc.).

He sounds way better on the second half of the new record, the first half with the "grime-meets-R&B" stuff admittedly isn't so hot to me.

Nothing against him though, I just hate whiny male singer voices, and his is reigning right now.
MJ might have strained at times, but he still blows The Weakend out of the water.

JKOOLMUSIC

I saw him on the iHeartRadio pop circle jerk last night. He was thre. He did a song that people seemd pleasd to hear live. It was something and people seemed to enjoy his dramatc hand movemnts. This statement is bold and large, which means it is carries more significance than yours.

"In fact, he soared with flying colors, transforming into a pop&B maestro of sorts by directing the audience with all the hand movements you could ask for."

Well, of course. When your voice sucks, you have to resort to flashy movements and such to keep the audience interested, and keep waking them up lol
All the pyrotechnics, stage lights, and hand movements in the world can't make him sound good.

I love Earned It and I think that he has a more interesting voice than the typical cookie cutter r&b singer but I have to agree that his other material leaves a lot to be desired. It's very immature.

I think that a less trashy image/material would suit him better.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
