Aretha's performance in Phillly, yay or nay?

The innerwebs is not pleased with Ms. Franklin's performance and I admit that I too was underwhelmed.

Here's a snippet. Any orgers care to comment?

Who might have been a better choice? I would have voted for Gladys Knight.

I think its nice, very classy. Maybe Bridge Over Troubled Water would've been more moving but this is better than nothing or Beyonce.

That's exactly why I couldn't understand the over the top vocal gymnastics she was trying to do with her voice. That only made it more noticable.

Aretha still believes she is in stellar voice. It's very hard for her to accept that she is way past her vocal prime. But, I think she sounded better here than I've heard her sound in a while. I agree, this is better than having someone like Beyonce or Taylor Swift performing. This was a pretigious honor performing for the Pope so they had to get someone like Aretha who is an American treasure and is considered one of the greatest singers to have ever lived.

Agreed. Well past prime but still revered as Queen.

Don't know why Gladys is always left out of major events like these. And her chops are still tight too.

I wasn't a fan of that performance like at all.. something about the arrangement, the organ and her runs in her delivery just didn't work. Its like she thought if she just oversang it all it would make up for the lacking vocal precision, but it just made it worse. I saw her live about 4 years ago and thought she sounded pretty good, but there are so many people who would have done that performance much more justice than she did for the Pope. wink

Change it one more time..

That shit was a HOTMESS!

A Fucking, HOTMESS! eek

I know SistaFranklin always has said, humidity and temp... does affect her voice. Cool. Fine.

But that nosense went way beyonnd the pale,

  1. I wonder if she and her organist bothered to do a sound-check, because the man drowned her out the entire sound. So, much so it was hard to hear Ms. Franklin singing. But on the other hand, maybe that was best.

2. Franklin's arrangement of "Amazing Grace" was horrendous, and her diction /singing was almost inaudible.

3. The singing/shouting shit wasn't working, Chaka Khan she's not at this late date.

All Aretha Franklin had to do was sing Amazing Grace in a lower key, sing the song acapella, or with the support of a choir.

Agreed. At first I thought it was just me being sleepy but when viewing the clip and seeing all the comments it looks like a lot of people were not pleased.

Like lezama said, her trying to do those runs with her voice was very unfortunate. For this occasion she should have understood that less is more.
