Prince is still relevant. Part of being relevant is having a stellar discography. D'Angelo only has 3 studio albums to his name. "Black Messiah" came and went very quickly. Most folks I talk to don't even know about it. So, no, he definately is not the next or new Prince. People thought it might have been a possibility 15 years ago but it didn't happen.

Well, since D'Angelo has been around for 20 years, I don't thing we can call him new anything. I think he's established his own sound. However, he isn't the most prolific cat.

I think he's proven his talents. However, I want him to stop mummbling on record.

I´m a big fan and have seen him twice (both shows were amazing) but I don´t understand why the vocals sound so distorted and why he´s mumbling so much on his album when he does not mumble at all during live shows. And he also did not mumble on the Brown Sugar and Voodoo albums.

It´s just Black Messiah that is a bit difficult to understand.

Any idea why he recorded it that way? Are there any interviews where they asked him directly why he mumbled so much during the recording of that particular album?

Because live and on his other two albums his vocals are not hard to understand at all.

He´s a huge Prince fan but I wouldn´t compare him to Prince at all. I think both, him and Prince, would laugh about that comparison.

He has his unique own sound and reminds me more of Marvin Gaye than Prince.

It´s a good thing that he´s back again.

Great musician, great performer, great songwriter, full of energy and soul.

True , He does show hints of Marvin in alot of songs. Also a little Al Green,Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield. But Prince seems to be his go to guy especially when he goes falsetto. As well as the gospel singers of the late 1960's and 70's. He's probably more gospel than anything else.

To the people who keep bringing up the mumbling as if it's some shameful indictment: are you listening to music or an audiobook? It's just his stylistic choice to try and blur the lyrics like that. The focus is put on the harmonies, rhythm and melody, not necessarily clarity of speech.

If you get so worked up about not understanding the lyrics then I don't want to imagine what kind of tantrum you'd throw listening to a song in a foreign language.

As for D being the next Prince, their approach, background, skills, etc are apples to oranges. D is certainly influenced by Prince, that's about it. End of story.

I guess there really is such a thing as a DUMB QUESTION.

Why. On Earth. Would you call D'Angelo. The new Prince. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?????

D'Angelo put out a great album, but can we all just get over ourselves and stop with the D'Angelo/Prince comparison?

There's some D'angelo stans on this board that suck D's dick so hard, they might scrape a tooth. If D'angelo shitted on their face, they would complain Prince only pissed on their face.

Thank you. THANK YOU. It's a stylistic choice, you nitwits. Many old blues artists did the same thing. Hell, even Mick Jagger did it on albums like Exile on Main Street.

While they both made overhyped albums with somewhat unimpressive results recently that could never stand up to their classic material, at least Prince didn't mumble thru his. Sometimes I put that Black Messiah on like magically I'll hear what everyone else heard some day. Voodoo is a whole other story. Prince sounds crystal clear its just the content is sorta sub-standard. Hitnrun and AOA over Black Messiah all day.

You Prince org mutherfuckers persist upon not letting other musicians just do them.

rolleyes

Prince's Parade Tour was just a re-hashed James Brown/George Clinton/Sly Stone presen-
tation, so quit acting D'Angelo is so indebted to Prince and not to Prince's forebears even
more so.

Bottom line: Prince has his legacy. His place in music history is etched in stone. Let D'angelo be the musician that is in the cards for him to be. D is a great soul musician. Plan and simple. Prince is not a singular artist. He has recorded in pop, rock, r&b, gospel, fusion etc. and obviously has the range to work in all those idioms. Both are great musicians and deserve to have their music appreciated without being derivative of the other.

On one level i agree with you..

On another- Not so much, I personally saw the Revolution in 1986..

I also saw D in 2015... with Jesse Chicken Greasin' away next to him.. 'Good GOD'!

& What's up with the Tavis Interview..? How many times was Prince mentioned?

Wasn't that suppossed to be D's BIG 15 year return interview?

I respect the Dude, But (Imo) He's leaning too hard on the P.

He was "becoming the new Prince" in 1999.

The new album is good, but the long-ass pause really did his career no favours. I'm glad that he got it out, but I think people generally consider him having blown his chances for becoming a "legend", or anything of the kind. I don't know any artist that would have been able to secure his artistic legacy by sitting on his ass for fifteen years after just two albums.
