Lana and frank are relatively new comers. Overall (singing voice, live performance, album sales) it has to be Beyonce and Bruno Mars or Usher.

I think people are confusing what an "artist" is versus what an "entertainer' is. They are not interchangable and they mean two different things. Sigh... I miss the 80s and the 90s. sad When we had MJ, Prince, Madonna, Janet, Whitney etc all talented performers that were also talented artists that made quality music and always pushed the envelop.Based on all the mentions its obvious todays music is truly shit. I will say I at least appreciate Janelle Monae (outside of that annoying Yoga song) and Bruno Mars for at least trying to make artistic quality pop music. Some of yall are smoking crack with these choices though.

-Beyonce wasn't even the best (female) artist in her prime

-Don't know enough about Jill

-Agreed though he's more of an entertainer (like pretty much everyone else these days)

-It's 2015, man lol (though he does put the supposed "R&B" stars of today to shame)

-He's a great talent, a compelling producer and a decent rapper but his material has been weak for the past few years and he's more of a media star now than an artist

-A good talent but nowhere near as good as he's hyped up to be and not even remotely close to the best

Interesting how only one of these people has blown up within the past 5 years and can even be considered a new star; everyone else has been in the business for at least a decade. Is this seriously the best we got?

Way to abuse the word 'artist' that derives from the word 'art' which is far more complex to understand and therfore remains subjective to your respective opinions... Otherwise, I would seriously not think about anything popular and mainstream when that word comes to my mind.

When you sit your ass through a concept album by Arcade Fire or Janelle Monae you'd know that these guys have explored many themes and notions to get to the point where the production would seem easy enough to just start embracing it. Same goes for Radiohead, Jack White, Vampire Weekend, Kevin Parker or many guys out there whom you know are there for one reason, and that's expressing their ideas.

You go and hear any random track off any LP by St. Vincent and you'd realize that girl IS actually an artist who has much more to say than your typical, indie-pop girl who tries so hard and yet remains unrealistic.

Nevermind all those underground neo-psych, art-rock bands or individual artists who work so hard to come up with albums that excel on every level and yet remain unknown, why would we even bother to look for the best male or female artist if there's a possiblity that those unknown musicians would win in an 'artistic' show off on any day!

As much as it's based on your own perception of 'art', I think everybody would assume that neither Beyoncé or Bruno Mars or anything that plays instruments very good and produces very acclaimed albums can be called that title, it surely belongs to the whole group of people who enter a studio with an idea and leave the studio with the same very idea being expressed in an incredible, authentic way.

That awkward moment when The Smith had top 40 hits in the UK. And Morrigay had many top 10 hits and is seen as a ''popstar mainstream'' in the UK biggrin

You can still be a "artist" while being mainstream. Just ask Michael Jackson, Prince, and the Beatles. They had Top 40 quality pop hits and wrote and particpated in the artistic process of making a song and album during the height of their careers. The problem with today's mainstream pop stars is that they are not artists. They don't write, produce, arrange their music nor do they participate in the creating process in creating an album. An artist is about creating and personal expression, not taking a completed song and switching one or two words around lol Janelle Monae is an artist, Jack White is an artist, Bruno Mars is an artist (I know some find his songwriting cheesy but he does everything a artist does, write, arrange and creates etc so he deserves the title.)
