...I also think Sly is the reason why P plays a Telecaster.

#1 = Fresh. this album is put over the top for me because it's got "In Time". AMAZING song.

.

I can't really pick an order for the others.....so much good stuff on all of these, up until they went on hiatus in '74.

.

Riot

Small Talk

Stand

Life

Dance To The Music

A Whole New Thing

.

I've been on a "Life" binge lately - "Plastic Jim" is fire. "Love City" and "M'Lady" are groovin hard.

"Jane Is A Groupee" is on something else. Quite an eclectic album. But I guess Sly's all are!

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I saw that in a documentary about Sly years ago: somebody played the single of Love or Money at 33 rpm and yes, it sounded like classic Sly. (He probably noticed this by accident.) Since then, I can't listen to the "normal" version anymore! confused

...you guys got me going thru my Sly discs. Another record that doesn't get a whole lot of love is "Heard Ya Missed Me". It was blasted and crucified by the critics and it's not a raw funk record. But it has it moments where the arrangements are well put together. It's almost like a "light funk Broadway" record. Disco, Stevie, The Jacksons and P-Funk were really kickin' ass during this time, so "Heard Ya" probably got kicked to the wayside.

Even as late as 1979, sly showed flashes of his brilliance with back on he right track. It was the third straight album to be overtly positioned as a comeback release. He really slipped into obscurity after this one, damn it.

Sly's apparence on Funkadelic - Funk Gets Strong (Killer Millimeter Version) was really solid.

There was also some demo tracks from the 1980s that landed on his latest solo trainwreck that were fantastic. (His Eye Is On The Sparrow, Get Away, Plain Jane)

Even that track One More Hit is good in it's own weird way.

I love all of Sly's albums, but I have to go with "Fresh". I can play that album on a loop all day and never get tired of it.

Make it so, Number One...

Sly is all over the place "In Time"...My favorite line is "coke to pep". The "two years is a long wait" was a promotional tag he used because of the long wait to release a record..Miles Davis used to play his band that song over and over to understand the polyrhythms...HardcoreJollies I agree with you about "Back On The Right Track"..That was a hittin' record. I even remember that radio ad for it. I've been trying to find the 79-80 Mike Douglas show interview where he's wearing the camo pants, obviously on something and saying he's going to quit the business. Can't find it.

The new "Live At The Filmore East"is an example of how tight their sound was. I am a devout Prince fan and respect his music emensely, however, lests not forget that there were shows that he had preformed not only with Larry Graham but also with Cynthia Robinson , Jerry Martini and Greg Errico all at the same time in the '90's. Even though you don't want to include the "Greatest Hits", an exception should be made because of the inclution the three of their biggest hit not found on their other albums. Having been lucky enough to have seen Sly and the Family Stone, with and without Larry Graham, I was able to see how much Prince "borrowed" from them as well as Hendrix and James Brown. For those fans that haven't listenned to "High On You", you are missing a highly underated album.

the songs' rhythm and tempo and guitar effects are similar...Prince vocal approach sounds like Sly throughout the song, especially on the adlibs as as the song is ending...
