BADU - how are we ranking her catalog albums of late?

I THINK I've gone back to WWU (The album that made me a fan) as my numero uno favo!

1. Worldwide Underground (spooky, sexy, and weedy all the way through)

2. New Amerykah Part 1 - save for some of the bad mix and distorted garage band vibe, it's the most beautiful mess of a protest soul record ever released

2. Mama's Gun (tied with NA p1). This used to be my all time favorite album by anybody ever. Sometimes i would still cite it as my desert island pick. It's just overlong at this point. Still, a masterpiece that incorporates funk, jazz, hip hop, r&b, and even some reggae in the mix.

4. Live - for her cover of Chaka Khan's "Stay" and her rap on the full "On & On" alone...

5. New Amerykah Part 2 - love love love "Love," "Gone Baby Don't Be Long," "Get Munny," "Umm Humm" and "Fall in Love." The intro to "Undercover over lover" is most beautiful too. Honorable mention to the two shorter tracks - they're both great beats and great lyrical content - they shoulda been developed into full tunes!

6. Baduizm - call me crazy but it's my least fave. Everytime she plays "Next Lifetime" at a show I yawm. It's just too slow for her. Too standard a pop song. On & On is the dirtiest, grimiest hip hop track by a female vocalist pretty much...ever...and "SOMETIMES" - both versions - murders! Also love "Apple Tree" but there's some trash on there ie "Drama" "4 Leaf Clover"....never fully appreciated "Otherside of the Game"...Im a "Danger" man.

your rankings?

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

1. Mama´s Gun......so diverse, so ecclectic, so from the heart and soul. Can´t get enough of it.

2. World Wide Underground. A tad short but contains some memorable songs. Nice memories!

3. Baduizm I bought this when it first came out. Fond memories, good music &lyrics.

4.Live Album. I actually listen to this much more often than to Baduizm.

5. Brand New Amerykah 2

6.Brand New Ameriykah 1 One and two are almost interchangeable to me. Sorry to say this but I could never really get into either one. Both sound very sketchy and unfinished to me, the songs come from the heart but are , in my opinion, not very memorable and in stark contrast to Mama´s Gun. It all sounds a bit sketchy and half baked, like she was smoking too much weed while in the studio. Of course this is just speculation, maybe she smoked much more while making Mama´s Gun and WWU but for some reason I still can´t really get into the last two albums, even though I still like her as an artist, would go to a live show without hesitation if she´s around, and of course I´ll always buy her albums but the last two are albums that I should probably listen to again and again in the next couple of weeks.

It´s interesting to see that you, just like me, also rated New Amerykah 1 and 2 comparatively low.

What is your reason for this?

Do you feel the same way I do about those albums?

PS: I like Honey, too. Such a standout track on that album.

Yes, your reasons match mine. The two albums may be more adventurous or artistic or whatever, but that does not necessairily mean good music to me biggrin Though I must say I way prefer Pt2 over Pt 1.

When I went to see her on the New Amerykah (1) tour I left disappointed as well, I had been to several amazing Badu shows up until then but this particular show just didn't move me.

PS the "Honey" video is just amazing!

Just like the white winged dove...

Apparently, from what I heard, she didn't even wanna sing that one, and it didn't fit her album or vibe at the time, but the label insisted. I love it too!

1. Mama's Gun (one of the greatest albums by anyone ever)

2. Baduizm

3. New America (or however you spell it) 1

That's it. The rest of the albums contain great songs but I never got into them as albums but she's still my boo!

That's some big love for NA part 2.

I got the feeling she was disappointed in how it came out, herself. She never really added a ton of songs to her setlist from it the way she would as the others would come out...did she ever sing 'Get Munny,' 'Gone Baby' 'Incense,' 'Jump in the Air,???

I love NAP2 more and more as time goes on but it's not "stone cold classic" for me, not sure why. "Love" is one of the sickest Dilla beats ever tho.

Well, one could make the same analogy to Prince and Parade. By the time Lovesexy came around, other than "Kiss," P didn't go back to it in his live performances all that much, until years later, when he perhaps realized how much that album was loved by his most devoted fans. Give NAP2 some time. To me, anyway, it's a far more evolved and balanced record than WU, and I think time will bear that out.

It is so good, and I think that's why I anticipated NAP3

I know im on board for that too. Pt2 sounds like it was less thought out than the 1st, which is why I wasnt feeling it...although I do like the idea of it and it defeniltey means well
