Pfftt...Prince got a $100,000 for the one word sample of Tennessee. http://www.riffraf.net/20...tennessee/

Thanks for posting this! I don't think I ever knew what happened with their "Alphabet St" sample clearance.

When Carol Burnett came out with the 1st DVD set of her show ( "The Best Of ...") the music skits and performances weren't included. Why? Ms. Burnett said, it was too costly. Her DVD box-set would've have cost a couple of hundrend dollars. Speed forward a couple of years and all of Burnett's shows are on DVD now, unedited. I'll assume "her people" were able to negotiate a payment - the recourd companies, publishers and artist- they could live with.

It's business, as Sould mentioned.

Sorry TD3, but the Carol Burnett Show is STILL not out in a complete collection yet. They are slowly trickling out with a few collected episodes here and there (like, "Carol's Favorite Episodes") -- but nothing complete. You have to wonder why not - as things were cleared the first time around, but it seems everyone wants their share of the money.

I was watching a movie music discussion with the Coen Brothers and they mentioned that they wanted to use a David Bowie song in one of their films and he asked for hundreds of thousands for using one fucking song? wow. Greedy bastard. Shame on you David.

Hendrix Estate is awful as well. Why be so greedy?

Its a "fuck you, pay me" business. The film industry is notoriously the WORST when it comes to fair compensation. Just ask any working writer in Hollywood. They suck up the writers' ideas, gut them and then steal the credit. Bowie doesn't owe the
Coen Bros. a damn thing. They want the song; they can pay for it. F**k 'em. evillol

That's business, babe. MJ charged the producers $125,000 to use the Beatles song "Can't Buy Me Love" for their film of the same name in 1986 after screening the movie in his house and enjoying it.

Why is it with musicians people think some businessmodels shouldn't apply?

Music is also a normal job for them and if he can ask this amount of money for a song, why not?

It's the way the market works.

Or should he ask less money because we're talking about music here?

This will surprise you. But not all of us think the market is a force for good.

He went broke because he trusted his manager; he learned from that mistake and made his music pay off ever after. Kudos to him. wink

well, to be honest, DB hasn't made thaaaaaaaaaaaaaat much money from albums sales throughout his career, is not about greediness, he's not as rich as many superstars out there; as far as I'm concerned, he should bleed any f movie company dry if they ask him tp use his music

Unless you mean the busker on the corner, businesses are licensed for live music.
