Alessia Cara - Here

Alessia Cara press photo 2015.png

Alessia Cara is finally “Here”

Alessia drops her first single, “Here”, after being a Youtube sensation covering a wide array of singers like Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, Lorde, Taylor Swift and more (notable mentions Drake Medley and Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t”).

The song capitalizes on those who don’t really fit in society’s festive functions like high school/college partying, drinking, and dancing. The soulful and vigorous delivery harks on the anger the outsider gets from being in a place they wished to leave.

THE STAVES – Interview

If I Was

Your new album was produced by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, how did that come about?
We sort of didn’t even realize it was happening until it was too late. We became friends when we toured with him and he said ‘When you got the time after the road, come up to the house. I’d like to record you singing a bit and figure out what works on your voices”. We literally went up to the studio for 10 days with no plan. We didn’t prepare anything but of course thought we were gonna sing there, maybe write a song but we ended up just making lots of demos. We were downstairs in the studio all the time.
There where little ideas that we’d had through touring. After 10 days, we had about six really nice strong demos and we knew we had to come back. At the end of our second trip out there we had a conversation where we said we think we may be making an album here and Justin was like “ Yeah, can I produce it?“ and we were like “We think you already are!“. It just kind of happened, we did another session and then actually did the recording for the album.

That sounds perfect for the second album because there must have been high expectations.
Yeah, we started before there where any expectations really. We were still touring the first album and when we had time off we were at Justin’s. We hadn’t even started thinking about making a new album. Also, we didn’t really tell our label that we went up the first time cause we were worried they’d get all excited. There would have been expectations and questions like “What did you come up with while you where there? Can you do a duet with Justin? Let’s get a film crew up there to make a documentary!“ It was nice to do it in secrecy.

In the first album there was a lot of sweetness that is still in the second album but in a more mature way. What is “If I was“ biggest difference from the first album?
I don’t know. I think listening to the album for us is a little like looking at a photo album. You hate your nose or remember something about that day. You can not really be objective about it. But we are definitely stronger, we have more experience and a good few knocks that toughened us up. Because we had such a great time recording it, it is difficult to separate yourself from that but when I listen to the album, I hear how excited we were to be there and trying knew things. Just letting things get much bigger.

I did an Interview with ‘Hozier’ and he said something like for him the music is the frame but the lyrics of a song where really the picture.
I feel like the bare bones of the song are the lyrics and the melody, and the voices are the picture, or the Christmas tree and everything else is just decorating it. All the stuff that you can do in the studio, the trickery, the magic. It is interesting because we were talking about how to perform the songs live because we sometimes play with a band and sometimes as a trio. One time in the studio I was getting a little stressed out because I didn’t know how do it. It was just so much now on the recordings, more than we used to do. I thought we were gonna have 50 people on stage, but then I talked to Brad who plays base on the album and he said it were just the songs that people are gonna like. If it is just us and a guitar at a gig playing them, it’s still good songs and people will still have the same connection with them. When the lyrics are shit though, there is no coming back from that.

Most of your artwork is set in past times, also the new video for ‘Black and White’, what is the appeal for you?
We definitely have always been inspired by bands like ‘The Beatles’, but we never made a conscious decision what we wanted things to sound and look like. Maybe the very nature of us being a family band is somehow kind of whimsical and doesn’t seem that modern. It is usually that the song dictates everything and the first album was made in a really old school way. We recorded it on tape and live and we physically edited it. We designed all the artwork, we drew it– it was really similar to how records where made in the 60ies and 70ies and I think when it came to making videos it just fitted. With the new album the influences where maybe a bit more playful. Justin had a lot of Polaroid cameras in his house and he ended up taking the picture that is on the album cover. The video for ‘Black and White’ doesn’t really have anything to do with a specific time, the director just had the idea of doing some sort of TV Quiz Show and we didn’t want to be the main characters but more of onlookers. But if you set it in a different time and a different country it frees you up to heighten the drama of it.

http://maastricht-students.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/The-Staves.jpg

How do you separate working together from just spending time together as sisters?
That is a real battle. As we started going on tour and being real band we noticed the importance of doing that. You have a dynamic in your family, the roles that everyone plays and suddenly that is put in a business area. You are signing contracts and there is money and people you are paying to do jobs. It’s not only about music but it’s about everything else. Every time you try to hang out you end up talking about emails you just read. It’s really important to take time to just be sisters and nothing more.

Getting to Know Rainey Qualley

The “Me and Johnny Cash” singer reveals five fast facts.

Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Rainey Qualley and even picked up her debut EP, Turn Down the Lights. So you know she’s young and beautiful and her voice is bold and bluesy.

With Mom Andie Macdowell

But we have some inside scoop on the sizzling new singer.

  1. Rainey is pretty sensitive. “I rarely get into heated arguments, but whenever I do, I just cry. Someone gets mad at me and I just start crying.”
  2. She’s a girly girl, too. “I definitely have a very feminine nature. I tweeted this thing that I think is really important for people to remember: being feminine is not anti-feminist. Like you can be feminine and still be a strong woman.”
  3. Rainey LOVES her cats and her future cats. “I have two cats. I’m hoping for more. I’m hoping to be 80 years old and have 20 cats and children will be afraid of me.”
  4. She has a passion for preserving the old and the environment. “My mom started taking me to antique stores when I was a kid and I am very interested in ancient cultures. Even holding things and touching objects that existed long before I did is interesting to me. Also, I’m into helping the environment, so not creating new furniture and whatever else when there’s already so much that exists is important.”
  5. Sports? Not so much. “I don’t know if this is surprising, but I never played a sport. I danced, but I never played a normal sport. I still love to dance in my living room all the time.”

Be listening for Rainey's new single, “Me and Johnny Cash,” and check out her new video here:

SPOTLIGHT

April 2014

Getting to that Stage

Rainey and Margaret Qualley, photographed at Alder Manor, in New York.

When you are Andie MacDowell, the thinking man’s ingénue of the 80s and 90s, and you are trying to raise three children out of the spotlight, a sprawling ranch in Missoula, Montana, is probably a pretty fair bet.

“That was a really idyllic place to grow up,” says Rainey Qualley, 24. She’s the middle of three children MacDowell shares with former model Paul Qualley. “We didn’t have TV or anything.” When Rainey, her younger sister, Margaret, and their older brother, Justin, were still young, MacDowell relocated them to a place slightly more urban. “It was kind of a culture shock moving to North Carolina,” Rainey, who is quick with a joke, says, laughing. “We had neighbors! We were just used to being wilderness children.”

But despite their distance from the limelight, the Qualley sisters, both lifelong dancers, were ambitious from a young age. “I was very determined,” explains Margaret, 19, who will make her television debut this summer in HBO’s The Leftovers. “I left home at 15 to go to the North Carolina School of the Arts.” But even after being offered a prestigious apprenticeship and studying at American Ballet Theatre, the young woman realized her heart wasn’t in dance—it was in acting. Now she’s living in New York, taking time off from N.Y.U. to film the HBO series, in which she acts alongside marquee names such as Justin Theroux and Liv Tyler.

Rainey has had a bit more experience on-screen, having appeared with her mother in 2012’s Mighty Fine and starring in the indie romance Falcon Song. She was also Miss Golden Globe in 2012, an episode she describes as “an overwhelming way to move to L.A.” But she’s currently focused on her singing career; she splits her time between Los Angeles and Nashville, where she’s recording “bluesy country” tracks, the first of which will hit radio stations this spring.

Whatever corner of the country the Qualley sisters end up in, the two seem destined, like their mother, to become enduring beauties. Be prepared to see their faces, and hear their voices—infused with that unshakable small-town warmth—increasingly on the national stage.

First Listen: Eva Celia gives us a “Reason” to listen

Many artists say that they “grew up in a house of music,” but singer and songwriter Eva Celia really was. She is the daughter of jazz musician and singer Indra Lesmana and actress/singer Sophia Latjuba.

An international artist, Eva was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and grew up both singing and acting. As a teen she began working toward a career in music, and she recorded a few singles amidst acting positions in the US and Indonesia. Her musical aspirations will culminate this Fall with her debut album release. In the meantime, we can enjoy Eva’s debut single, “Reason.” With a strong backbeat and a pop/soul vibe, it is a fresh sound for the Summer.

Check out “Reason” and tell us what you think of this talented new artist.

The legendary rock icon and platinum selling front man of Aerosmith, Steven Tyler, made his country music world premier debut on ABC’s Good Morning America July 3, 2015. The new country music video, Love is your Name, features Steven Tyler and a Nashville country rock band, Loving Mary.

Loving Mary is a four-piece band with a lot of history and hits that have been paving their way behind the scenes in the music industry. They are a powerhouse of talent making their world debut alongside Steven Tyler. I would like to introduce you to Loving Mary.

Steven Tyler sat down with Kevin Kennedy at Boston's #1 for NEW Hit Country 102.5 WKLB on June 5, 2015 discussing the single, new album, upcoming Aerosmith tour and his interest and influence of country music. Tyler said that “Country is a feeling”, and a “way of life”. In older interviews Tyler has been quoted as saying his big country influence growing up was the Grammy award winning American country band, Everly Brothers. Tyler described in his interview with WKLB how country music influenced even the older Aerosmith hits from “Cryin’” to Dream on!”

Tyler talked about his solo project and the album that is in the works. Tyler said there are possibly 18 songs on the album. The album however will be on hold while he finishes up the Aerosmith North American 10 day / 2 month tour starting mid-July through August 2015. As for the album title, Tyler said a possible album title is “Where are you from?” but then joked and said “I don’t know yet.”

The debut country music video for “Love is your Name” is on VEVO now.

THE ENEMY return to WARNER Records, with whom they released their debut album, in 2007, to release their eagerly anticipated 4th studio album.

All previous three Albums have charted in the Top Ten, with debut album 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' reaching number 1 and going double platinum! They've won numerous awards and headlined many stages across the UK, rapidly selling out venues and gaining a solid live following.

Still only in their mid-to-late 20s, and younger than the bands they emerged with ' and outsold ' they're readying their most ambitious record, 'It's Automatic', for release this October. 'We've been working on it for a long time,' says Tom. 'It's a fucking great record. It was difficult to make but not in a bad way. To people who are still living in 2007 it'll be a shock but to us it's a natural progression.' The birth of the record came when the band were on tour in Scotland, and the evolved Tom was having a crisis of identity. 'I sat Andy down and said, 'Mate, I don't wanna make another Enemy record. I'm bored.
We've nailed what we do, I wanna go and do solo stuff and make music like the music I listen to.' And he said, 'So do I.' So we decided to take a leap of faith together.' Tom warns that there's a possibility people won't get it. 'But the songs are some of the best I've ever written, the

With more than 75 million albums sold worldwide, and more No. 1 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart than any other artist, the band's record of achievement is hard to top. The eponymous debut album and 1984 were both certified Diamond, for U.S. sales in excess of 10 million, placing them on an elite short list of double RIAA-certified Diamond Award honorees. Keith Richards first album in 20 years

added: 10 Jul 2015 // by: Music-News.com Newsdesk

Keith-Richards-first-album-in-20-years

Keith Richards will release his eagerly anticipated CROSSEYED HEART, his third solo album and his first in over 20 years, September 18th on Republic Records.

CROSSEYED HEART, a fifteen track masterclass encompassing everything that makes Keith Richards one of the 20th century's most celebrated talents, is a 5* musical journey that takes in reggae, rock, country and the blues.

The first taste of CROSSEYED HEART will be unveiled on July 17th with the explosive first single, 'Trouble,' a taut guitar based slice of heaven featuring Richards on electric and acoustic guitars, bass, lead and backup vocals. He is richly supported by old friends, drummer Steve Jordan, guitarist Waddy Wachtel and Bernard Fowler on backup vocals. The song was written by and produced by Keith and Steve Jordan.

'I had a ball making this new record and working with Steve Jordan and Waddy Wachtel again. There's nothing like walking into a studio and having absolutely no idea what you're going to come out with on the other end. If you're looking for 'Trouble,' you've come to the right place.'

Keith wrote or co-wrote the majority of the tracks on CROSSEYED HEART, many with co-producer Steve Jordan. Highlights include the country tinged ache of 'Robbed Blind', the reggae flavored 'Love Overdue,' and the aptly named 'Blues In The Morning.' Richards collaborates with several artists including a captivating duet with Norah Jones on the soulful ballad 'Illusion' which she co-wrote.

Keith Richards, who plays electric and acoustic guitars, bass, piano and vocals on the album, is also joined by guitarist Waddy Wachtel, keyboardist Ivan Neville and background singer Sarah Dash, part of the X-Pensive Winos, who accompanied Richards on his previous solo records.

Steve Jordan plays drums and vocals and other artists accompany Richards' on individual tracks, including Stax songwriter and keyboardist Spooner Oldham on 'Lovers Plea,' pedal steel by Larry Campbell on 'Robbed Blind,' Aaron Neville on backup vocals on 'Nothing On Me,' and dear friend Bobby Keys on saxophone on 'Amnesia' and 'Blues In The Morning.'

Keith has released two other solo studio albums, Talk Is Cheap in 1988 and Main Offender in 1992 as well as a live album entitled, Live at the Hollywood Palladium, December 15, 1988.

With the growing success of Canadian singer The Weeknd, it was only a short matter of time before the official news of his much-anticipated new album was announced.

Leona Lewis: I Am empowers

Leona-Lewis:-I-Am-empowers

Leona Lewis views her new album as 'an empowerment record'.

The 30-year-old singer is gearing up to release I Am, her first record since 2013. And the former X Factor winner, who released four LPs prior to her newest album, says her forthcoming offering I Am really reflects what she has been experiencing in her life.

'It's an empowerment record,' she told Entertainment Weekly magazine. 'I really just wanted to speak about the experiences I've been going through the past seven years.

'I've just been delving deep into myself and finding out who I am and finding out how strong I am. I want to, through this record, empower people and myself as well.'

Events that have taken their toll on Leona include her split from Simon Cowell's record label Syco and a relationship breakup.
And the star added in the interview she felt the process of penning tracks for the album was somewhat cathartic for her.

'Even though sometimes some of the songs were coming from a place that were maybe sad or a bit down, the songs lifted me out of that,' she continued.

Leona revealed the album, which was mostly produced by renowned producer Toby Gad, is quite 'choir like'.

It also features a song written by the world-famous Diane Warren, who has previously only penned tracks for Cher and Whitney Houston.

'I was so honoured to have this one on the record because she specifically wrote it for me,' she said. 'I've known Diane for a long, long time and I always wanted to work with her, but for some reason or another it never panned out. This time I was sure I wanted something by her on the record.'

I Am is due for release on September 11.

Gregory Porter new single

Gregory-Porter-new-single

'Man Of The Moment'* Gregory Porter today announced details of a UK single release of a remix of his classic track 'Liquid Spirit', after Berlin-based electronic production enigma Claptone's original remix version caused a significant stir on the dance scene. The collaborative radio edit version is now being released as a single, with the impact date set for 4 September.

Since its release in May, the original 'Liquid Spirit' Claptone remix has become an underground dance hit. It scored praise from numerous dance blogs including Divesounds.com who exclaimed: 'It's pretty hard to not be in awe of everything Gregory Porter touches and Claptone seems to have that knack of only putting out absolutely massive productions, so this remix was never going to disappoint.'

The track then began receiving multiple plays throughout Ibiza in key clubs, until it became the Most Shazamed track in Ibiza and scored a number one on dance mecca Beatport. The track is on course to become a summer smash, with over 4 million streams on Spotify, 780k plays on soundcloud and 600k views on YouTube, leading to the decision to release a radio version which is expected to score numerous plays across key UK radio stations. It has already had incredible support from key shows at BBC Radio 1 including Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Danny Howard and Mista Jam at BBC Radio 1xtra.

Gregory who is primarily known in the UK for his jazz/soul inspired vocals has surprised many with his remarkable success within the dance music scene, which has also included featuring on collaborative Disclosure single 'Holding On', which received critical acclaim from taste makers including Vice.com, Fader and Indie Shuffle.

Nearly two years after its release, his Grammy-winning album, 'Liquid Spirit', shot up into the Top 10 of the UK Album Charts, reached Gold sales and became the most streamed jazz album of all time. This year Gregory's televised appearances and performances have included his hotly anticipated Glastonbury Festival debut, Sunday Night at The Palladium and VE Day 70. Gregory plays V Festival this summer, amongst others, and tours the UK next spring ' opening at iconic London venue the Royal Albert Hall on 4 April 2016. Unlike Gregory, whose distinctive look means he's pretty hard to miss in a crowd, producer Claptone's identity is a well-kept secret, with the mystical producer only performing live in a gold Venetian mask. Claptone, who burst onto the scene in 2012, has a London-based performance this summer where he will showcase his Immortal Live show on the main stage of SW4 Festival, supporting dance legends: Faithless. Space to release 5-album box set

added: 9 Jul 2015 // by: Paul Holmes

Space-to-release-5-album-box-set

Famed for their hits Female of the Species, The Ballad of Tom Jones, Neighbourhood and Avenging Angels, Space were one of the biggest bands in Britain in the late 90s, selling half a million copies of their second album, Tin Planet, and gaining international appeal through their appearances on the soundtracks to Austin Powers and Lost in Space.

It all went wrong for the band, however, when the release of their planned third album, 2000's Love You More Than Football, was postponed and later cancelled completely after a fall out with their record label. Promotional copies have since become highly sought after collectors items, and the band split in 2004.

Now well into their second run following a partial reformation in 2012, the band are set to tour the UK in the Autumn and release a new album next year. But first, there's some cleaning up to do.

Out of print for many years, Space's entire back catalogue will be reissued as a box-set in October. The set will comprise of 1996's debut Spiders, 1998's Tin Planet, 2004's Suburban Rock 'n' Roll and their 2014 revival Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab. Also included, at long last, will be the famed lost album, Love You More Than Football.

There's currently no word on bonus tracks, but given the band's penchant for B-Sides, and the comprehensive nature of this release, it is quite likely at least a few will sneak in.

Following on from a sold-out UK tour and supporting soul singer Angie Stone in 2014, JP Cooper returns with When the Darkness Comes EP.

The 4-song project explores a journey of love, longing and loss – and you can listen to it on Telegraph.co.uk.

Combining folk, blues, soul and gospel, this follow-up to Keep the Quiet Out showcases Cooper’s talent for both songwriting and lyricism which releases true emotion – not only for himself but also the listener.

This Cooper particularly shows in the EP’s title track, When the Darkness Comes, which discusses the need to escape reality and gain clarity from the silence of darkness, and the breathtaking Satellite.

Hailed as a Future Sound of 2015, the dreadlocked, blue-eyed singer-songwriter from Middleton, north Manchester, is touring again, with five dates in London and a coveted slot at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.

Influenced by Donnie Hathaway, Bill Rivers and Stevie Wonder, Cooper was also a singer with Manchester's finest gospel choir, The Manchester Sing Out Choir.

When the Darkness Comes is out January 26 on Island Records.

Julio Iglesias Is Back With First Spanish Single in 12 Years, 'Fallaste Corazón': Listen

By Angie Romero | July 10, 2015 12:39 PM EDT

Julio Iglesias

The nostalgia sentiment has really paid off for many artists recently, whether it’s releasing an album of their own hits with a new spin, (á la Juan Gabriel with Los Dúo), or paying tribute to the classics of others (a la Cristian Castro with his three albums in homage to José José).

Now Julio Iglesias, also known as the most successful Latin singer of all time, is entering the nostalgia business with his upcoming album, Mexico – Julio Iglesias, in which he’ll interpret 12 standards from the country’s golden-era songbook.

For his first single, Iglesias offers up “Fallaste Corazón” (You Failed, Dear), by the prolific Mexican songwriter Cuco Sánchez. Many icons have done their own interpretation of the classic, including Rocio Durcal and Pedro Infante. Here, Iglesias reclaims his title as the world's smoothest balladeer.

Julio Iglesias Receives Honorary Degree From Berklee

Iglesias’ forthcoming album, due Sept. 18, is his first Spanish-language recording in 12 years. The Madrid-born crooner first performed in Mexico in the ‘70s, conquering the largest Spanish-speaking market and then going on to sell more than 300 million records worldwide by recording in as many as 12 languages. Still, Mexico holds a special place in his heart. In fact, this is his second tribute album to a country that was instrumental to his career, the first of which came in 1976.

“Mexico is a country that I love dearly,” said Iglesias in a statement. “The Mexican people have given me many indelible moments in my life. I know this country as if it was my homeland, and I always carry it in my soul. This record is dedicated to the outstanding composers who, generation after generation, filled our lives with love, nostalgia, memories and moments. After all these years, they remain alive in our souls.”

Stream Emily King's Gorgeous New Album 'The Switch'

Emily King may very well be one of NYC’s best kept secrets, an artist loved by the learned and accessible to a keen ear. And while her hometown reverence may be right up there with that ill little pork bun and Thai tea spot down on Bayard or Jarobi’s Tribe Taco Tuesday pop-up happy-hour in BK (shameless plug, I know) it’s King’s timeless blend of pristine r&b chops and just a little bit of funk, paired to her brilliant vocal treatments that might just put her a notch or two above your cuddie local culinary treasures.

Last week the NYC-born & bred crooner let loose her third studio LP The Switch viaThe Wall Street Journey, and today she’s announced that she’ll be bringing a live & direct revue of the stud record to six cities down the eastern seaboard. And as someone that had the pleasure of catching an intimate set last week in which she previewed just half of the album, you may rest assured that this is one you don’t want to miss. King and her four-piece ensemble (engineered by Black Messiah‘s BenKane) are precisely the dose of forward-minded funkateers you should be capping off any evening with. Below you will find both a stream of Emily King’s gorgeous new The Switch LP, along with the forthcoming tour dates, which will soon be added to, so keep your ear to the ground for those in the weeks ahead. And if it’s good to ya, grab your own copy of King’s new record on iTunes today.

Robert Cray: 4 Nights of 40 Years Live

added: 14 Jul 2015 // by: Music-News.com Newsdesk

Robert-Cray:-4-Nights-of-40-Years-Live

Robert Cray is to release a double CD and video package 4 Nights of 40 Years Live.

The set will be available in a variety of formats - 2 LPs + Mp3, 2 CDs + DVD, Blu-Ray + 2 CDs and digitally. 4 Nights of 40 Years Live will be released August 28 on the Netherlands-based Mascot Label Group.

The first CD is fresh, live recordings from four nights recently recorded at four venues in the LA area. With his current band --longtime bassist, collaborator and friend Richard Cousins, keyboardist Dover Weinberg (who was in Cray's first band) and drummer Les Falconer (O'Jays, Keb 'Mo) ' Cray fronts a group that is solid, seasoned and vital. The playing is in the moment, and the sound is singular.

The thirteen cuts are selected from the Cray Band's recording library of 20 releases. Among them are rock radio favorites 'Bad Influence' and 'Right Next Door (Because of Me),' the soul searing 'Love Gone to Waste,' and 'These Things,' a bluesy ballad that features one of Cray's string-bending and mind-blowing guitar solos. The live CD is the fourth Cray Band release produced by Steve Jordan, who plays drums on several cuts. Also guesting are vocalist Kim Wilson and harmonica player Lee Oskar, tenor saxophonist Trevor Lawrence, trumpeter Steve Madaio and saxophonist Tom Scott.

The bonus CD is a revealing glimpse of Cray's early career and the promise of a future that would reward fans for decades. Selected from the band's set at the 1982 San Francisco Blues Festival and a 1987 appearance on the Dutch TV Show 'Countdown,' the music captures the band's youthful presence and its ability to revive the blues without abandoning it. Included are favorites from the Cray's Band 80s set lists; 'Smoking Gun' and 'Too Many Cooks.'

The 94 minute video in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live is a Cray Band convergence. Coming together are a mesmerizing blend of clips from the San Francisco Blues Festival, the Dutch TV show and the four concerts featured on the first CD. Between clips Cray comments on the band's history and his personal philosophy of music. There is also behind the scenes footage of the band collaborating with producer Jordan. And putting the Cray Band in perspective are interviews with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy each giving their personal response to the music and the man.

Lars Ulrich: Modern music is regurgitated

added: 14 Jul 2015 // by: Music-News.com Newsdesk

Lars-Ulrich:-Modern-music-is-regurgitatedPrintable version

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has explained why he's in favour of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.

In an interview for The Inquiry on the BBC World Service he said "I believe streaming is good for music. People sit there and go, "I'm not getting paid very much for streaming"....but streaming is a choice on all fronts. It's a choice for the fan to be part of....it's a choice for the artists who are involved in making their music available on streaming services. It's a choice ...by the record companies that represent the artist....15 years ago those choices didn't exist."

However, he accepted that streaming would be better for more established artists like Metallica than newer, less famous acts: "streaming probably does benefit artists with higher profiles, yes. A lot of these playlists that are being made available for people in the streaming service, they seem to feature higher profile artists and that just seems to be the way it's sort of playing out right now."

He added that it was particularly helpful to artists like Metallica with large back catalogues.

He also said that, if people were engaging less with music these days, it wasn't only streaming's fault, but because today's music is "blander" than it used to be.

"one of the main reasons I connect less with new music in my life now is because there's less great new music to connect with. I mean a lot of the stuff that's been played is just regurgitated, this year's flavour, this thing, but it's not people on the leading edge like The Beatles or the Miles Davises or the Jimmy Hendrixes taking us all by the hand into these completely unknown, unchartered musical territories."

Lana Del Rey Releases New Dreamy Love Song 'Honeymoon' [LISTEN]

After much anticipation, Lana Del Rey is back to deliver her signature dreamy pop sound. She teased snippets of the single earlier in June, but now her song "Honeymoon" is finally out.

The lyric video for the new song opens up with a '70s-style home video of the "Summertime Sadness" singer relaxing sleeping peacefully in a flowery meadow, with the song's eerie opening piano chords playing in the background. The lyrics are then shown on a pink floral background. Continuing with Lana Del Rey's usual themes of scorned love, "Honeymoon" tells the tale of a complicated romance. In the second verse, she sings, "We both know the history of violence that surrounds you/But I'm not scared, there's nothing to lose now that I've found you/We could cruise the news — Pico Poulevard in your little used bullet car if we chose/Mr. Born to Lose." In the chorus, she sweetly sings "our honeymoon" repeatedly.

It has been just over a year since her last album Ultraviolence, which TIME named one of the top ten best albums of 2014. Del Rey is set to release her next album, also titled Honeymoon, in the fall of this year. She confirmed her upcoming album with Billboard and said that this album would be different from her previous work. She stated, "It's very different from the last one and similar to the first two, Born to Die and Paradise. I finished my last one [Ultraviolence] in March and released it in June and I had a follow-up idea. It's growing into something I really like. I'm kind of enjoying sinking into this more noirish feel for this one. It's been good." She also confirmed that she was planning on featuring a cover of Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," saying "I'm having fun with my interpretation ... I'm so so much a fan."

lolawolf dropped a new mixtape

lolawolf dropped a new mixtape

we're gonna be listening to it everyfuckinday

It is a basic requirement of every cool girl to be in a band. Gwen Stefani has No Doubt, Kim Gordon has Sonic Youth—hell, even Lindsay Lohan's character in Freaky Friday rocked out with her homies (don't act like this wasn't your jam). So it's no surprise that Coolest Girl in the World Zoë Kravitz is the frontwoman of the hip-hop-influenced electro-pop trio LOLAWOLF. The real shocker is the band's latest EP, everyfuckinday, which unexpectedly dropped on Tuesday. The mixtape features four new songs, along with the title track, for which a video was released earlier this month. LOLAWOLF's signature I'm-just-doing-me attitude and Kravitz's effortless, sung/rapped vocals remain true throughout, making for the perfect soundtrack to the edgy rooftop parties you'll be hitting up with your friends this summer.

Stream everyfuckinday below and, to really get your Zoë Kravitz fix, watch her play Go Fish with Miley Cyrus in LOLAWOLF's "Bitch" music video.

Leigh Nash Channels Willie Nelson, Flaco Jimenez on New Solo Album

'The State I'm In' merges musical influences from the past with life lessons of the present

By Beville Dunkerley July 15, 2015
Leigh Nash Leigh Nash will release her third solo album, 'The State I'm In,' in September. Alysse Gafkjen

"I listen to Willie Nelson every single day, and he doesn't even know me. That keeps me up at night," jokes Leigh Nash, lead singer of Sixpence None the Richer.

The angelic, unmistakable voice behind huge pop hits including "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes" is going back to her Texas roots for her third solo album, The State I'm In, due out September 18th. The Brendan Benson-produced project was heavily influenced by the music Nash grew up on, which included everyone from Nelson and Patsy Cline to the mariachi music coming across the border from just about 200 miles south of her New Braunsfels home.

"I fell in love with storytelling in music and great, strong lyrics," Nash says of the music filling her speakers as a child. And the storytelling the now 39-year-old does on The State I'm In comes from pages in her diary. Many of the songs stemmed from the joys of parenthood (the singer has an 11-year-old son) and sadness of losing her father, which was followed shortly after by the demise of her marriage.

"I've been busy with life and busy learning lessons about love and loss and keep on keepin' on when things are rough," says Nash, who co-wrote all 12 tracks on the new album.

Along with Nelson and other country greats, the musician tried to emulate the sounds of Flaco Jimenez on much of The State I'm In. ("His sound is the embodiment of much of the vibe I tried to capture," she explains.) And there's even a little Beach Boys influence heard in "What's Behind Me," which she co-wrote with her husband, Stephen Wilson, and Jesse Hall. Still, "it isn't a throwback record," Nash insists of the LP, which was recorded in Nashville. "And we weren't afraid of going beyond the country genre. We just went where the songs told us to go — and they took us to some great places."
