Rick Springfield

Just decided to try getting into him. I wasn't sure where to begin but decided to go with Tao. So far I'm really digging it. I think I prefer the synth pop direction he went in, over the rock stuff. Any Springfield fans out there?

Lastdecember should be able to help you with Rick (and A-ha too razz).

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yep big fan since a teen. I've seen him three time and his shows are always high energy. I think my fav CD is Living in Oz (1983) and Tao is a close second. I have basically all his CD's. There is a nice 3 CD comp on amazon that is great and cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Leg...l_1#disc_1

This concert DVD is fantastic, which I bought on VHS: http://www.amazon.com/Bea...pringfield

Nice! So far I'm liking it a lot. I also read about a rare album called Beautiful Feelings. I heard snippets of it and liked it a lot. The quality was terrible though. I'd like to find a good copy. Do youhhave it?

Huge fan here. Rick is consistent as hell. "Tao" album is underrated and worth checking out. Also "Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance".

His two recent albums, "Venus In Overdrive" and "Songs For The End of The World" are both awesome!

I was fortunate enough to see Rick live, a couple of years ago, it was his first UK show in a looonggggg time, and I made sure I had a ticket.

It's ok. Not one of my favs. He has alot of albums from the 70's that were released in europe only which I've never heard. The Shock Denial Anger Acceptance album was good, but his voice was very raw and hard to listen to. I think I read he was using drugs when he was doing it. He's clean now though. He also did a cover CD's(The Day After Yesterday and Christmas With You), but I don't have them. Rock Of Life was another good album. His bio book is also pretty good and honest. He also recently wrote a book Magnificent Vibration: A Novel, which got great reviews.

Rick's latest album "Songs for the End of the World" seems appropriate to kick off the muck of a frustrating day...especially this song:

All I can say is Go! Go! Go! I took my son to see Rick, Loverboy, and Eddie Money last year and all delivered a great concert. Too bad there was a late start and Rick's set was cut short due to curfew. He was on fire and I could have listened to him perform for two more hours. Plus, when Eddie came out the temperature was around 100 degrees and he was wearing a huge padded coat with layers, which he pealed off when he started singing "Gimme Some Water." LOL Damn, it was hot in more ways than one! lol P.S. I remember one chick in her early twenties who passed out due to heat and the medics had to cart her away while us old chicks were still dancing and cheering in the summer heat... razz lol

Rick to me is the most Consistent artist since his returning to music in 1998 (releasing albums). KARMA was the kick off to that, and that was just Rick playing almost everything, releasing indie, it was a great return for someone that hadnt had a release since 1988. He pretty much dropped out of sight just as the ROCK OF LIFE tour was about to start, Rick had an accident on a ATV where the vehicle flipped over on him, breaking ribs, his shoulder, he had to put a plate in his shoulder and couldnt play guitar for over a year, that was when he retreated to raise his kids.

KARMA is all of that, i played that CD to death, and then in 2000 Rick returned with what i think was the tightest LIVE record i have heard, called ALIVE, this was in stores but also a special web site fan club version with bonuses etc.. the band was on fire on that record, great sound, great tracklisting just a perfect recording.

SHOCKDENIALANGERACCEPTANCE came in 2004, and it was a record that took Rick over a year just to record, this album is RAW, and angry but so freaking bare bones and honest. I know it was mentioned that Rick was taking drugs but that is FALSE, Rick's last time taking a drug was when he was in a band in Australia in the late 60's. Vocally its raw because that was the process he recorded it in, it was his studio there was very little changed from the demos to the record. Though it was originally planned to be a record about many emotions, he said ANGER was the main vibe of this record. This record is worth the purchase just for "BEAUTIFUL YOU" a minor AC Radio hit that would have been a top 10 had AGE-ism not be the rule of the day, and "MY DEPRESSION" which is Rick's life in a 3 minute song.

Rick would follow with a covers album "DAY AFTER YESTERDAY" which featured some really cool covers and obscure songs too, also a Xmas album and even a Lullabies Record which he wrote for his kids ages ago and found the tapes in a drawer and re did them.

Then RICK would follow with possibly his best 2 albums ever. "Venus In Overdrive" came in 2008 and start to finish it was a perfect record, pure song crafting, great production from Matt Bisonhette who is at times a band member and also a writing partner on some. Its hard to pick a song from this record because they are all great, i would say "SHE" and "Time Stand Still" are my favorties from it if i had to pick.

Then would come SONGS FOR THE END OF THE WORLD, and again working with Matt brings pure GOLD. This record is fire from track one till the end. There are a few versions of this record, also special downloads, different album covers, some people like me ended up getting this album 4 times. Also there is an all acoustic version available through amazon and his site, great buy.

And currently he released the amazing "STRIPPED DOWN" which is a document of his special shows where its him and a guitar storytelling and doing odd songs and hits acoustic but also with a Laptop named "BAND IN THE BOX" which is Rick playing to himself as his own band. I have been to 3 of these shows and 21 of his full band shows and i never get tired of him at all, the acousticshows i have gone to and treated myself to a special meet and greet to meet the man, he is a great artist and soul. And possibly the hardest working person out there, this year alone he is touring with his band also he has gone out on tour with Benatar, The Romantics and also Loverboy, and done about 50+ of the stripped shows, i think if i checked and counted he is doing at least 100-150 shows this year and that is what he has pretty much been doing over the last decade or so, plus he is 65! and just wrapped a movie with Meryl Streep coming in August, finished his new album also due in the later summer, and written 2 books, had a Documentary film called Affair of the Heart which is incredible! And he loves and treats his fans better than any other artist i have ever seen.

I've said this before, Rick's "My Depression" is the best song ever written about the subject. He just published his first fiction novel and will publish a second one--he is an excellent writer. I missed his stripped down show when he came through here locally--around the same time Prince was here--had to choose between one and the other.<img src=" />

The hardest working rock artist today who connects with his fans--that's Rick. I am so glad to hear there is a new album on the way--I really love the last one.

The Stripped shows are great and the CD/DVD release of them is an excellent document of it, but of course there is nothing better than being there and hearing some of those stories from him, he is a really funny guy and very comfortable and in total control of his career and just diving into everything.

Also a few misconceptions about RICK.

1.That he began in the 80's, not true his first number one was in 1981 but his first Top 40 hit (top 20 actually) was in 1972, Rick also had a few minor minor hits after that "Take A Hand" being one and "American Girl"

2. Back in 1972 when Rick Hit, he was marketed as the next David Cassidy, this led to "suspect" and "Rumors" that his label was busing in young teen girls to buy the record and paying them, the rumor was a lie, it was actually about another young new artist on his label (Capitol), but Rick's management and label didnt back him cause his was out of the country, the rumor spread and Rick's album disappeared, he was BLACKLISTED.

3. Rick a ONE HIT WONDER? this is the biggest misconception, helped along by Oprah's poor research department, asking him to a ONE HIT WONDER 80's show, Rick declined and his team replied he has 17 Top 40's thank you. Though Jessies Girl is Iconic, Rick has had BIG HITS too like "Dont Talk To Strangers" "Love Somebody" and "Affair of The Heart" all landing in the Top 10 and 4 straight MultiPlatnum albums over a 4 year period and then followed with a Platnum album and Gold one in 1988. Rick at one point was so "HOT" he charted a B SIDE, "Taxi Dancing" with Randy Crawford from the movie "Hard To Hold". This was right around the time Rick played LIVE AID.

4. Rick is an actor who than SANG. NO NO NO. Rick took an acting class in 1975 and got little gigs to make cash between Record deals because no one would sign him. In 1979 he went in with no money, had to go in record at SOUND CITY during the early am hours when no one else was there and he did the demos for "Working Class Dog" , it should also be noted JESSIES GIRL was picked up by a radio station that wasnt playing the "single" that was released, which TODAY is not allowed in Radio!!! The song got "good phone response" and then he got cast on "General Hospital" which that summer was the hottest show on earth, it was a perfect storm.

Tecnically his first recordings date to 1969 in a band called ZOOT which was pretty big in Austrailia but Rick was just the guitarist and wasnt getting to write his own songs so he left and got the solo deal around 1970 or so, had a huge hit "Speak to the sky" which is a folk/like song that crossed over here to the USA and peaked around 20 i believe or higher, but they marketed him as the next David Cassidy which Rick was not with that, and even in 1980 when he took off big time the TEEN mags used him on covers and old interviews from the 70's because he didnt want to do them, plus he was 33 on teen magazines!

Jeez homeboy has been around forever. I also can't believe he's 65. He's looking quite good, though I wish he hadn't messed with his face. He didn't need too. Anyway I love the Tao album and the 12" mix albums i got.
