So they worked with Stevie Wonder in 1973 right before he started making some of his greatest music. And Motown just sat on the album instead of releasing it. Wow. eek

Makes no sense, huh? disbelief how could they reject an album produced by Stevie Wonder in his prime?!

I don't think it was "rejected" Motown wanted the boys to go in a different direction.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The Stevie Wonder 'album' wasn't a full album, just 3 or 4 songs. Stevie confirmed this himself when a member of the online Michael Jackson Archives FB group tracked him down a year or two ago.

One of those songs was Buttercup and another was an older version of You're Supposed To Keep Your Love For Me, with Jermaine on lead and the brothers on backgrounds.

I've read about the J5 version a few years ago.

I thought it was the Jackson 5 that wanted to go in a different musical direction. That's what MJ said in his book. Jermaine stayed with Motown out of loyalty to his first wife, whom happened to be Berry Gordy's daughter.

J5 had no say-so in 1973. Do what Jermaine father-in-law tells you.

They left Motown in 1976 and signed with CBS. How did they break away from Motown?

They left later in mid-75 but after the Wonder material they still did about 5 albums before leaving. They left for more freedom.

Motown also sued the group and Joe Jackson and said that they owned the name "Jackson 5". That's why the brothers became "The Jacksons".

Motown released Joyful Jukebox Music in 1976, which was unreleased J5 songs. I think they were trying to steal sales from CBS. lol The first album at CBS was on Philadelphia International, Gamble & Huff's label.

Jermaine married Berry Gordy's daughter.

Marvin Gaye married Berry Gordy's sister.

Didn't these guys know that those relationships could create 'conflict of interest' problems later on? lol

I guess Berry Gordy figured this out during the filming of Mahogany when he had problems with Diana, and also with her bum rushing her way into The Wiz movie, in which Stephanie Mills was said to be the original choice. razz Speaking of Mahogany, Jermaine had some songs on the soundtrack including one popular in some discos Erucu. I've heard that Stephanie is supposed to appear in the upcoming live NBC version of The Wiz.

That's why a number of artists left Motown because Gordy was shady.
