Why Doesn't Jermaine Dupri Get More Respect?

Why Doesn't Jermaine Dupri Get More Respect?

GLENNISHA MORGAN SAYS THE SO SO DEF HITMAN IS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
Jermaine Dupri

Why doesn't Jermaine Dupri get the credit he deserves?

Jermaine Dupri recently claimed that Ciara’s new single, “I Bet” sounds very similar to Usher’s 2001 hit "U Got It Bad,” which he co-produced alongside his longtime producing partner, Bryan-Michael Cox--and itt doesn’t really take a musical genius to hear the similarity between the two tracks. Mirroring the “Blurred Lines" fiasco between Marvin Gaye’s estate and Robin Thicke, which resulted in the court ruling in favor of Gaye’s estate, Dupri is seeking credit for himself and his collaborators. Surprisingly, a lot of the commentary surrounding the situation has been that the Atlanta producer is just another 'broke dude coming out of the woodwork' and that JD should just have a seat, which is rather unreasonable, in my opinion. Shouldn’t credit be given where it is due? And even though it's unfair and presumptuous to equate anyone's value to their finances, Dupri couldpossibly have a few extra coins if the producers of Ciara's new single didn’t change a few chords in order to dodge garnering a sample clearance.

Here's the bigger issue: Jermaine Dupri is one of the most underrated producers of his time. Have the shade throwers forgotten about his hand in presenting the world with Kris Kross, Da Brat, Xscape, Bow Wow and Jagged Edge? And not just as the one-time So So Def mogul, but as the producer who created all of those artist's biggest hits. His flip of The Jackson 5's "ABC" for "Jump" alone should put him on some producer lists, but he always seems to be left out of the conversation.

Have we forgot his work on TLC’s opus, CrazySexyCool and gifting Usher with My Way and Confessions (which Dupri's own real life dra... backstory.) Mariah Carey, anyone? JD’s contributions to the songstress’ career go far back as lending his So So Def touch to her 1995 hit single “Always Be My Baby,” which played a huge role in helping the racially-ambiguous singer cross over into the 'urban' market. After Carey's very public post-Glitter breakdown, Dupri helped the diva slay and curate one of the biggest come backs ever with the Emancipation of Mimi (which turns 10 next month) and even won a Grammy for it.

Jermaine Dupri not only helped establish the sound of some of hip-hop, pop and R&B’s most lauded artists, he helped cultivate the Atlanta sound and bring the intricacy of the South to the masses back when rappers from outside of New York and California had to fight for respect and airplay.

Now it would only be fair to mention Dupri’s downfalls. A foreclosure, tax issues, a bad break up with our beloved Janet Jackson (and his hand in her under-whelming 20 Y.O. album) and a questionable exit as president of Virgin Records Urban Music, but it doesn’t take away from his previous achievements and current efforts.

The industry and fans alike can be incredibly hard on Black artists. We’re entirely too quick to throw away our greats or laugh at their lows (as we have Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Lil Kim and countless others). We often kick our entertainers when they are down or wait until they are six feet under to present them with flowers. And sometimes, even then we still don't let them rest.

It's about time to stop beating up on our artists, especially when they have gifted us bodies of work that we’ve partied to, cried to, made love to and more. Quite frankly, it's just simply unfair to snub someone when they’re trying to obtain what's rightfully theirs and there is certainly a case to be made for the idea that "I Bet" is a rip-off...even if there's not a legal one Jermaine Dupri has given us over two decades of hit records and counting. Give that man his props while he's around to hear them.

Oh lawwwwwd.

So basically they're saying if Ciara's song was different, and more like Jermaine's song, it could be infringing.

LOL

Apply this logic to any situation for more laughter.

Jermaine doesn't get respect because Jermaine is not a smart business man. Jay Z and Diddy are Jermaine's peers but yet people don't put him on their level because he does not have the empires that those two have. He has been around for just as long as they have and look at the situation he is in. Jay Z and Diddy are worth $100 of millions while JD just lost his house to foreclosure. A house that he has had since 2005. It should have been paid off. On top of that to be 42 he still acts as if he is in his early 20's. He is the definition of what I would call "New Money", even though he's had access to millions over the last 2 decades.

People always overlook his longevity as a producer, and hits he wrote for acts like TLC who were not on his imprint, So So Def.

Lots of his produced material dated so badly (or SoSo Badly, rather).

That horrific compilation with that "Gotta Getcha" is so not good.

While it's true that JD isn't always regarded as highly as his peers musically, he is responsible for some major r&b and hip-hop hits. As far as critical acclaim is concerned, he has received more attention than DJ Quik, who deserves A LOT more respect for the work he has put in for the past 25+ years.

i dont think he's done anything special, i mean he produced some hit records. he was not innovative and his entire roster was pretty much a carbon copy of some other artist. kriss kross=mini naughty by nature, da brat=female snoop, bow wow =mini snoop, xcape=female jodeci. he wasnt very original. he's also very immature and arrogant. people dont mention him with the diddys and jays because he hasnt evolved or command respect as a businessman.he's in his 40s and still talk about partying, jordans and video games.

I think all these rappers are immature him, Diddy, Jay etc they ALL immature. I know I might be in the minority but I think JD deserves some credit for his "earlier" productions which were quite good in my opinion. He also produced some really good songs for Mariah too. His no Quincy Jones but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve credit for the productions he produced that were good. I think people never lump him with Diddy or the Jays because he has never really marketed himself as a "businessman." He has pretty much stayed in his lane as a producer/rapper.

i disagree, i follow him on social media and he acts nothing like them, its hard to even take him serious. i also disagree about him staying in his lane, he should have stuck to producing but he wanted to be a 'mogul', problem is he dont have the know how.i like alot of his early production to, im just not sure what kind of credit he is supposed to get. the person who wrote that article seems to be speaking about the way people respond to jd, calling him broke and telling him to have a seat, ect.well people clown him because he puts on fronts like 'money aint a thing', yet he's always in financial trouble, that alone makes it impossible for him to get diddy, jayz,dr dre respect.

Gonna have to agree to disagree because I think Jay and Diddy also behave very immaturely for their ages. Ain't no grown man with a child over 40 should be wearing pants sagging down to their behind or singing about bling bling or running from the po po when they are millionaires. None of them are mature at all. I also don't see how you think he is trying to be like Jay and Diddy when he doesn't endorse collognes, shoes, NBA teams, (or things unrelated to music). He pretty much sticks to music for the most part. He is not trying to be a business mogal outside of music. I am not stanning for him but he has some really good earlier productions that he does deserve credit for, Jodeci, Monica, Xscape, etc.

are you sure you are talking about diddy and jayz now in 2015? and how much have you followed jd because he has tried and failed at all kinds of brands. he had some cheap looking watches,a restaurant that closed down, some kind of alcoholic beverage that never took off,he has a social media site that he copied from russel simmons and even has a similar name. the reason you probably dont know about these things is because they all failed. i know you dont follow him much because he didnt produce jodeci. he should have stuck to producing but like i said he wanted to be like those other guys.

Once again, thats my opinion you don't have to agree with it. Jermaine has did some work/projects with Jodeci. I never specifically said "produce". Also, I am not sure why you excluded them specifically when I cited two other acts out of a list of other acts Jermaine has also worked with that he did descent work with. Just because he didn't work out with Janet doesn't mean he doesn't deserve credit for his earlier works, collabs, productions etc. Jay and Diddy "currently" do a lot of elementary things down to their music, personal life, etc. I also don't think Jermaine has ventured into their territories of business but once again this is my opinion you don't have to agree.

Jay Z and Diddy also do elementary things but because they are smart businessmen people tend to overlook it. JD has tried and failed to do the things that they do. But he is a great producer. Especially when it comes to Usher and Mariah's older music. People just don't take him seriously as a mogul.

its not really my opinion though, you said he never ventures outside of music like the other guys and he has indeed tried but failed. im not familiar with the work he's done with jodeci thats why i pointed them out, i know he worked with the others you named.i never said anything about his past production work, i just commented on the reason he dont get the respect alot of his peers get.i didnt mention his work with janet, he hasnt really had much success since mariah's album back in 05 with any artists. there are alot of great producers who hasnt had much recent success, they are still more respected than jd because of the way they carry themselves and the work they didmade a lasting impression.

This is all fine.

But I never insisted that he "deserves" the respect that they have. I just insisted that I think he deserves some credit for some of his 90's material. Never called him a genius though lol

Neh, not buying it. IMO all the hot 90s producers out of ATL had their own distinct sound and it was usually derivative of NY or LA. Organized Noize/ Dungeon Family were the only ones that were not. If anything [i]they[i] are the Atlanta Sound because they weren't NY, LA, Miami, Mid-West...etc.

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!
