Jill Jones, though, was kind of screwed. At the point she was working with Prince, she was the least known of his proteges.

Yeah,Jill Jones got a raw deal. She joined the Prince camp in 1982 but her album wasn't released until 1987.She wasn't able to take advantage of the Purple Rain hype. She had to sit back and watch other (less talented) proteges release their album before hers. When she didn't like the tracks that Prince submitted for her second album,he got pissed and wouldn't let her out of her contract for seven years (stopping her from moving on with her career). To make ends meet, she became a backup singer for Chic.

Jill has stated Prince was the same way (but to a much lesser degree..definitely not 20 years)

But then again, his other associates haven't said anything like that. Besides acts like Sheena Easton and The Bangles, P pretty much created everybody else

Hearing all these stories has convinced me that it's not a good idea to allow anybody to "create" a career for you.Pay you dues and make it on your own.Being a Prince protege might have seemed like a great opportunity in the 80s,but there was a downside, too.

She wasn't a protege. She was just signed to his label as a solo artist.

Maxi has reached out to lead singer JoJo in hopes of putting together a reunion featuring all four original members, but JoJo refuses to do it confused I'd love to see them get back together and do a kickass tour with the Stone City Band (who are back together and tour frequently).

Jo Jo released a solo album independantly a few years ago. I was really surprised how dull and uninspired it was. neutral

They way Rick downed JoJo McDuffie in that book is unreal. He called her a stupid ho, a dumb bitch and said that she was the ugliest of the Mary Jane Girls.

He also outed Teena Marie as being lesbian or bisexual. From the way it's written, you could tell Teena was troubled and struggling with her sexuality and thought that Rick was somebody she could trust and confide in. I'm sure she had no idea at the time, that 20 or so years later Rick would put it all out there in a book. She also talked about how Rick was funny with the money.

Both are control freaks and were big time control freaks during that time. But Rick had demons, drugs, and that made everything he was doing messy erratic and just out of control, but we KNOW for a fact this was how he treated women, poorly, call it what it is, mistreating of a woman, plain and simple, and Rick and many others all did it.

Pretty much every song on her album was composed by Prince and she was a Paisley Park artist. If the others were referred to as proteges, I don't know why she shouldn't be.

If you're referring to Dale Bozzio, that information is false.I think Prince only contributed one song to her album....a track called "So Strong".

Yeah,Rick didn't hold back on the insults, huh? I'm not sure what happened, but I know JoJo was working as a backup singer for Anita Baker at one point.Rick hated Anita lol I think she turned Jojo against Rick,or something like that....and Rick was furious.

Interestingly, when Rick got out of the prison and began working on the Urban Rapsody album,he called Jojo to duet with him on the song "Don't Ever Say You Love Me".Ironically,Rick was supposed to sing that song with Teena but they were feuding at the time and she declined.

Not sure exactly, but I recall him saying some not-so-nice things about her lol I think she was telling Jojo to "get away from Rick,he's nothing but trouble" and word got back to Rick.He wasn't happy.

Oh, sorry. I was referring to Jill Jones.

I completely missed the context of the post and thought the original comment had been about Jill Jones. It was probably because the original post ended with a quoted comment about Jill Jones. Dale's photo was posted above it.

The interview is still up after 2 years

21:21 is when the interview starts. At 39:40 is the part that's relevant to this thread.

I remember this interview.Maxi is so great...she's very candid and down to earth.I like the point she was making....that there's nothing stopping the Mary Jane Girls now.Rick is gone,so now they could do alot of things (new album, reality show, etc). If only JoJo would agree to it.

Sounds about right. lol But, at least she wasn't acting like a dope fiend like he often times did.

Actually, Vanity did a LOT of shit, so did Apples. Back in the day, if you were a Prince protege, you could write your own ticket. You were MADE. Shit, look at Sheena Easton being on Miami Vice and the Bangles would not have had their career without P. The amount of people he made famous or who owe their career to him directly or indirectly is staggering.

Sheena Easton was huge before Prince. He just took her outside of that adult contempary pop that she was known for. She was made before Sugar Walls.

I knew who Sheena Easton was before I was familiar with Prince. lol
