Elvis Presley ~ Almost In Love

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The movie was on TV the other day and I've been listening to this song a lot since. I really like bossa nova tunes.

He never said that and even did an interview with Jet magazine about the rumor. Elvis was also often called a n-lover because he hung out with black people. He invited Redd Foxx to his wedding with Priscilla and had black background singers The Sweet Inspirations. It's not nice to say that you love the way someone died. Anyway I like Elvis and have some of his records/movies. If you don't, that's your business. I never understand people who go into threads or start ones about people they're not interested in just to trash them.

In 1957, the Staples performed on a Goodwill bill that included a young Memphis gospel group, the Dixie Nightingales, with 16 year old David Ruffin, future vocalist in The Temptations.

.

"He was a little skinny guy - even I was taller than him," Mavis recalls of watching Ruffin perform at Mason Temple, a Pentecostal church with more than 3,500 celebrating fans in attendance. "But he sang with so much feeling, he'd go all through you. You'd just have to sit there and hold yourself to keep from exploding. Cleedi couldn't keep herself from shouting, she just had to let herself go. But I'd fight it. You see he was bad."

.

Ruffin's cool was pierced by Rufus Thomas, ever the practical joker. "Rufus jumped down off the stage into the audience with this can, opened up the can right in David's face, and out popped a 3-foot [fake] green snake, and David's eyes got as big as...he thought it was a real snake!" Mavis says. "He shot down the aisle. He eventually came back to his seat still shaking."

.

While the Staples performed, three leather-jacketed figures appeared in the wings just offstage. Mavis noticed them because they happened to be just about the only white guys in the room, and they were carrying motorcycle helmets. After she got offstage, one of the bikers struck up a conversation.

.

"He told me his name but it didn't register," Mavis says. "He knew our music real well, though, and he told me he loved the way Pops played his guitar. 'I like the way your daddy plays that nervous guitar.' David Ruffin comes up to me afterward and is all excited. 'Do you know who that was?' I just shook my head. 'That's the guy who sings Blue Suede Shoes!' "

Here is an excerpt from a 1988 interview Johnny Cash did in Creem magazine in which he mentions Elvis' last appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. I'm typing it from the article, so there's no link.

JC: They wouldn't let him take drums onstage and they said some very unkind things about him. I remember one singer-and I won't give his name because he's dead now. Elvis walked by, and I started talking to him because he didn't know anyone there. I mean, there were some people he idolized: the Louvin Brothers, Bill Monroe, he idolized some of these people. But this one country singer walked by and said "god- n- singer" and kept walkin'. I turned to Elvis and looked and the tears were runnin' off his chin. He dropped his head and said "I gotta go". I walked him to the door and said, "Where you goin'?". He said, "I've gotta get out of here and I'll never be back".

Exerpt from an interview with actress Celeste Yarnall:

.

Q : There's a touching story about Martin Luther King.

A : Right. This was the week that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. So here I am with one of the roles of a lifetime, meeting and working with Elvis in 'Live A Little, Love A Little', with this tragedy on television. So, we go back to his dressing room to have lunch. Elvis sang 'Amazing Grace' to me. And he sobbed in arms like a baby, because he was so, so devastated by Martin Luther King's assassination. And, you know, he felt that he was such an integral part of the Black community and that he felt that they had taken a brother from him. And he told me that he had felt embraced by the Black community, because his struggle had been so, so big. And they felt that he was one of the only White singers that could sing with soul. And we know that to be true. So, we both cried. And it was a very touching time to go through that together.

Larry King Live: January 9, 2003

Caller: Hey, Jeremy, one question I've had is Elvis Presley. Is Michael a fan of his? Because they're so much alike.

Jermaine Jackson: Yes, very much. We're fans of Elvis, too. We grew up watching his movies, everything. We like him.

Larry King: Did you ever meet him?

Jermaine Jackson: We met him one time in the elevator in...

Larry King: Vegas?

Jermaine Jackson: I think it was Tahoe. And he came and we were doing a show there. And he came in and we were coming down or some were going up. And he said -- something like, Oh, yeah, you Jackson boys.

But we were in awe because it's Elvis.

Larry King: Michael was there, too?

Jermaine Jackson: Yes.

Larry King: It's Elvis. So it's the Jackson 5 and Elvis on this elevator? Just an ordinary little elevator trip.

Jermaine Jackson: Yes.

We were friends for a long time, for twenty years. And he told me, he’d ride around Memphis around the streets he’d come up in, all alone at night. Ride around on his motorcycle when he was sure the rest of the world was asleep, just kind of hauntin’ them places he hung around in as a kid. He was a country boy."James Brown

.

Elvis was my close personal friend. He came to my Deer Lake training camp about two years before he died. He told us he didn't want nobody to bother us. He wanted peace and quiet and I gave him a cabin in my camp and nobody even knew it. When the cameras started watching me train, he was up on the hill sleeping in the cabin. Elvis had a robe made for me. I don't admire nobody, but Elvis Presley was the sweetest, most humble and nicest man you'd want to know." - Muhammad Ali

dseann that's not fair, read about the guy and his stuggles. That is a false story to bring him down. What Mickey posted is right on. He loved black music and grew up on gospel and many of his friends were black. The song "If I can Dream" is a tribute to MLK.

Some people today like to say that Elvis "stole" Hound Dog from Big Mama Thornton, but not that the song was written by white guys in the first place. lol Nor that many soul/R&B hits were written by whites or had white musicians playing on them or had white producers. Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday was written by a Jewish guy.

.

Elvis also disliked being called The King Of Rock 'N Roll. He would either say Jesus Christ or Fats Domino was The King if someone said that around him.

Speaking of that, Fun In Acapulco is another one of the several Elvis movies that came on. I think it was Turner Classic Movies, don't remember exactly.
