Barbara Streisand Extends Lead Ahead of Mariah Carey As U.S. Best Selling Female With Newly Platinum ‘Partners’

barbra-streisand-partners-thatgrapejuice

That Babs reign just will not let up.

For, over 50 years after her debut album, Barbra Streisand saw her September 2014-released, #1 album ‘Partners’ deliver one of the year’s highest first week sales for a female – a feat all the more impressive as it was accompanied with news that it was her 10th chart-topper on the tally.

Extending her lead from nearest competitor Madonna (who has 8 number 1 albums), reports surfaced today that the album’s newly established platinum certification has helped her leave two other top-selling divas in the dust – Reba McEntire and Mariah Carey.

Read more below:

Source:

“With her latest album Partners reaching Platinum certification, Streisand extends her record for the most Platinum album certifications for a woman in RIAA history. Incredibly, Partners is her 31st album to ship more than 1,000,000 copies in the U.S. The closest competition? Reba McEntire, who has 19 Platinum-certified albums.

Partners debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 in Sept. 2014. It was her 10th album to top that chart, making her the only act to notch a No. 1 album in each of the last six decades.” – Billboard

Pushing toward the 74 million mark with U.S. numbers alone, the powerhouse diva extends her lead as best-selling female in U.S. history ahead of Carey (whose numbers currently rest right under 70 million).

Poor Mariah! First Nick Canon files for divorce. Then Barbara beats her all time record. She is having a horrible week. biggrin

Your thoughts?

clapping That's freakin' amazing. And to think, her career spans the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, and now the '10's. You go, Babs! nod

Letme make sure I'm understanding Babs "so call" Best Selling female honor...

Example 1....Garth Brooks has sold over 100-Million Albums in The USA ALONE...That makes him the Best selling American Artist in American Music History....So is the Number crunchers saying Babs has sold 75-Million Albums in The USA?

Yes but Babs has sold many more albums outside of the US. Grath Brooks on the other hand is barely known outside the US and maybe Canada, as generally red neck cowboy music does not sell well in the thinking world (Europe/Oceania). No Garth Brooks song has ever charted let alone album in New Zealand, we have our own crappywestern music industry which pretty much died off after a brief revival in the early 1980s.

.

Babs on the other hand has had hit albums since 1962's "I can get it for you wholseale" cast recording and a line of big sellers in the 1960s such as The First/Second/Third Barbra Streisand Album, then People which was a #1, Two My name is Barbra albums and two more colour me Barbra albums. After a brief hiatus in the late 1960s, when she had two massive hits with the Funny Girl and My Fair Lady soundtracks, she started more commercially orientated pop albums with 1970's Stoney End. Morepop gold followed in the 70s, with The Way we were soundtrack, Streisand Superman, A Star is born, 1978's Songbird, 1979's wet and the biggest was 1980's Guilty in which she teamed up with Barry Gibb and had her biggest hit - Woman in Love and 2 other massive hits. In all she 4 Number 1s and at least 10 Top 10s in the 1970s.

.

The output slowed down in the 1980s, but she still hit the top with the Broadway Album 1985 and then in the 1990s had huge hits with duets with Bryan Adams and of course Celine Dion(Tell him). Not every Streisand album has been a hit (A 1966 French album went nowhere along with a 1976 Classical album regarded as her worst), but Streisand has been a musical presence since she was 19 and now she is 72.

.

Streisand is the greatest because of her incredible voice, songs and her skills as an actress on and off the silver screen, even more so than Madonna or Mariah, BS is a brand. Plus she is pretty fnd of self promotion, she even worte several books about her home renovations.

Why does this article put Carey in the headlines, when it is Madonna, who's the closest female competitor to Streisand?

Mads has only had 12 major albums and not all of them were number ones. In fact only Like a Virgin, True Blue, Like a Prayer and Music were #1's. The 3 earlier ones sold about 25 million between them worldwide and her following outside the USA makes up a large ortion of sales. Also the past 4 Madonna albums, have also been flops compared to her usual output.

The last album had one Top 20 hit and the rest were flops.

.

She has more success with singles, but even then Babs outclasses her. Babson the other hand has had over 30 albums that have sold at least platinum.

Oh, please. You have to love the Madonna haters. She is, by far, the biggest selling female artist in history. She has sold more than 300 million albums alone worldwide. She has three of the top grossing tours by a female artist. Stop trying to demean her achievements.

While Babs was calling gay people "faggots" in the 1980s (there was a YouTube video released recently that showed her saying that on a movie set), Madonna was risking her career for the gay community and took a huge stand on national television for those discriminated for AIDs or their sexual orientation. She doesn't have the same voice of Babs, but has put herself in the line of fire more than Babs.

http://www.zap2it.com/blogs/barbra_streisands_lost_indiana_jones_outtake_surfaces_slightly_offends-2011-09

By the way, MDNA-2 million worldwide, Hard Candy-4 million worldwide. COADF-12 million worldwide American Life-5 million worldwide. ALL NUMBER ONE ALBUMS.

People can "pick and choose" any facts they want in order to make Madonna look bad. But facts are facts.

who exactly are the madonna 'haters' you are talking about, the persons who wrote the article about babs?so because they wrote about streisand's success they are hating on madonna? i dont care who sold what ,even though idont believe madonna has sold 300 million albums, i was just wondering why this article disputes the long standing declarations of madonna being the biggest selling female artist.

I actually like Madonna, but unlike some fans, can live with the fact she will never be more successful than Barbra Streisand. Those figures for her recent albums sound dodgy too. True Blue sold 11 million and Like a Virgin sold 10 million. One the other hand I doubt Hard Candy or MDNA even went gold. They were crap albums and Madonna had got old and stale by her 50s.

.

Lets just leave her to trying to adopt Malawi instead of going after Ms Streisand.

So? What is the point of your post?? The article clearly talks about US sales and in US album sales Madonna is ahead of Carey, so there is no point putting Carey in the headline, making it seem like she's #2. Further the article states Madonna has 8 #1 albums, as does Wikipedia. So really, what you are saying is not even true and again I have to ask, what was the point of your post?

I agree with KitBradley the sales numbers for many artist have been all over the place. lol Record sales in the past have been inflated and deflated for various reasons. Record companies lowballing sales so the could take a greater percentage off the top.

"Partners is her 31st album to ship more than 1,000,000 copies"

The record business is a doggy one. To ship means that 1,000,000 copies were printed and left the factory. It does not mean that those records were, or will ever be sold to the public. That is why there are wildly conflicting numbers between the list of artist from place to place.

This is not to take away from Streisand or anyone else. She is an exquisite, rare talent that has earned her place in history.

I wonder what her gay son thinks about that. I always prefer to hear it from the lips of the person in question, rather than in a story. Context is always important too. Did she really say it? Did she not. How do we really find out, without a doubt? Hmmm.

Around 1988, at the age of 21, Gould came out to his parents as homosexual.[2] Around 1991, tabloids outed Gould as being gay. In an interview with The Advocate published August 17, 1999, Streisand said:[3]

I would never wish for my son to be anything but what he is. He is bright, kind, sensitive, caring, and a very conscientious and good person. He is a very gifted actor and filmmaker. What more could a parent ask for in their child? I have been truly blessed. Most parents feel that their child is particularly special, and I am no different. I have a wonderful son. My only wish for my son, Jason, is that he continues to experience a rich life of love, happiness, joy, and fulfillment, both creatively and personally.

Nobody on this earth has the right to tell anyone that their love for another human being is morally wrong. I will never forget how it made me shudder to hear Pat Buchanan say that he stood "with George [H.W.] Bush against the immoral idea that gay and lesbian couples should have the same standing in law as married men and women." Who is Pat Buchanan to pronounce anyone's love invalid? How can he deny the profound love felt by one human being for another? ... Unfortunately, however, as long as people like Newt Gingrich and Pat Buchanan continue in public life, the fight to codify gay marriages will be a tough battle to win.

Streisand is homophobic? sheesh, she says a few questionable things and is labelled homophobic, yet she is the patron saint of gay men everywhere. Well for any gay born before 1970 at least, they would know about Babs, the Madonna generation (1970- 1990) seem to be more defensive of her and and the Gaga (1990 -) generation generally know very little about either of them.

.

Streisand has always been popular amongst gays. After Jews, the gays are her biggest fans. Nearly every gay man I know over the age of the 40 loves Barbra Streisands music (Anyone remember a 1998 movie called In and Out, where a man is trying to convince himself he is not gay, but he just loves Barbra Streisand and keeps quoting her to the point his female fiancee says "Fuck Barbra Streisand"). Out of athe stereotypes being labelled at gays, The Barbra Streisand is one of the worst and before Madonna came along, it was her as the prime stereotype of Gay Musical Preference.

.

Still the bitchiest Madonna fans and Madonna trolls seem to be gay men, I wonder why that is?

The numbers on this list seem very low for all artists, where is Prince?, I have a feeling it only counts certified units, as in albums that reached Gold and Platinum, so an album that sold 300k in the US and 90k in the UK would not count. In that case, Prince who has many albums that failed the Gold level, would rank poorly. At the very least he would be for US sales only. Excluding international sales and greatest hits or live albums and soundtracks, collaboration albums.

Another way he would miss out, would be the crediting to separate entities like, Prince, Prince and the Revolution, Prince and the NPG, The Symbol, TAFKAP, Jamie Starr, 3rd Eye Girl etc.

.

Purple Rain - 13m

ATWIAD - 3m

1999 - 3m

D and P - 2.5m

Symbol - 2.5m

Parade - 2m

SOTT - 2m

Musicology - 2.5m

Emancipation - 1m

GB - 1m

Batman - 4m

Controversy- 1m

Prince - 1m

TGE -0.5m

3121 - 0.5m

That is 39.5 million albums and that is being really harsh there.

Yes. Me too, but according to RIAA certifications, it is the truth. But then again, RIAA only means shipped to record stores, not sold to public. Maybe record stores carry an abundance of Garth Brooks albums. wink Whatever. It shows that americans suck, buying that crap. razz

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

No shit, Sherlock. How about reading and understanding of what is written? This thread deals with US album sales and RIAA certifies shipments of albums to US record stores and that's what this list is about.
