Eddie Murphy's New Reggae Single, ''Oh Jah Jah''

Eddie Murphy 's new reggae song references current events and societal issues, with lines like: "Police in the street shooting down Black babies / Glory Hallelujah for the young and the innocent."

While it's been 20 years since Murphy's hit "Party All the Time" off his debut musical album, How Could It Be, the actor tells Rolling Stone he never stopped making music.

And despite his two most recent releases having a reggae vibe, Murphy isn't committed to just one genre.

"The same way you can see me sit at a table in a movie and be six different people, when I'm in the studio, I can do that, too," Murphy says. "I can go right now and put out a country album. Or jazz."

The comedian adds that if the single takes off, he'd consider going on tour.

"If I came back and did standup again, I can't just be like the other standup comics," Murphy says. "To have a real hot band play some tracks for about 40 minutes, the curtain drops and then you do an hour of jokes? That's the ultimate vision."

The single will be released on iTunes on January 27.

Eddie going back to stand-up could potentially do some inspiring things for him. At this point, its well-known he stars in rather low-quality movies just for a paycheck, and he hasn't done an undisputed classic since...I'll say "The Nutty Professor". So clearly, the guy has been on auto pilot for some time, and his laziness and absurd choices in films speaks volumes. But to see him go back out there with just a microphone and himself on a stage, that could give the guy the kick in the ass all of his fans have been waiting for. It would give Eddie a reason to actually sit down, and use that brilliant mind of his to come up with some new stand-up material that quite frankly is well overdue. We all wanna see it, and we all know he has it in him. He just has to find it, or come across a shady promoter with enough money to force him to find it lol. Whatever the case, it could be huge!

Good Lawd. Please stop Eddie Murphy, think of the children! Music slash singing was never Eddie's strength. Jamie Foxx on the other hand has a great voice, but his stand up was never as good as Eddie's. I guess there is a trade off.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

A coople years ago, Keenen Ivory Wayans said he's ready. It's just a matter of him doing it.

Hell if his old buddies Keenen, Arsenio Hall and Robert Townsend can get back up on stage, I don't see why Eddie can't.

The Head Detective has an HBO Special premiering later this year. By the way, am I the only person who liked Les & Wes Rawls?

Love Eddie..He has a decent singing voice, but if that were his path in life it would have happened first and not the Acting...I am not saying he should stop singing, writing, recording but the average American will not take him seriously as a "serious singer", I'm sorry..He turns to music when he's not getting good scripts (not that that's a bad thing)....I want to see him Direct & Produce more and show the world he has a lot to offer to the industry that made him King...

I don't think he wants to be back at that place where, if the standup thing explodes, he's "the man" again, bringing on impossible expectations and unwanted attention. He's been the king of the hill before. It probably left him very jaded about the industry and the current stand-up scene.

Thats a very good point, but I don't think its ever a bad thing for a creatively stagnant talent such as Eddie to go back to his roots, and find out again why he pursued and loved it in the first place, if only to reignite his love for his craft. I personally dont think hes going to set the stand-up world on fire again like before, but it couldnt hurt for him to at least give it the ol' college try again.

Eddie Murphy on reggae, career flops and Michael Jackson
By Hardeep Phull - February 7, 2015

Eddie Murphy on reggae, career flops and Michael Jackson
It was 30 years ago that Eddie Murphy had his first hit. Not a movie — his first hit song.
Back in 1985, the synth-soul smash “Party All the Time” soared to No. 2 on the Billboard chart and launched what initially promised to be a successful side career.

But due to the critical panning of albums such as 1989’s “So Happy” and 1993’s “Love’s Alright,” as well as long periods of inactivity, the comedian’s musical efforts have taken a back seat.

But just because the 53-year-old hasn’t released much in the way of music doesn’t mean he hasn’t been recording plenty. “I’ve got all kinds of songs that no one has heard,” he tells The Post.

One you can hear is the new single “Oh Jah Jah,” which recently hit No. 1 on the iTunes reggae chart. Although Murphy’s noncommittal about future releases, it’s clear he still has plenty of music in him.

Ahead of joining his former “Saturday Night Live” cast mates for the show’s 40th anniversary special on Feb. 15 (“I’m curious to see everyone. I have nothing but good memories”), Murphy talked to The Post about his musical history.

Q: “Oh Jah Jah” has a real state-of-the-world feel to its lyrics. What specifically inspired you to write them?
A: I was watching the news that particular day and there was a lot of crazy stuff going on. They were chopping people’s heads off, Ferguson was happening, and Ebola was breaking out. The first lines of the song were originally, “Ebola’s on the move and the world’s gone crazy,” but I changed it to “The devil’s on the move” because I didn’t want it to be dated. The devil’s always on the move!

Q: After the 2013 single “Red Light” with Snoop Dog, did you feel like you were onto something with your reggae exploration?
A: The reggae community really liked “Red Light.” If it ain’t right, that group will turn their noses up. Reggae is one of my favorite types of music. It’s like black folk music, and I know I can get that authentic sound and feel because I listen to artists like Bob Marley and the Wailers all the time. Not everyone can get that.

Q: Thirty years on from “Party All the Time,” do you think the ridicule the song receives is fair?
A: Let me tell you something about that track which not a lot of people know: Rick James wrote and produced that song, and it was the biggest-selling song of his career. [James’ highest-charting single was 1978’s “You and I,” which went to No. 13. “Super Freak” only reached No. 16.] It was No. 2 on the pop charts for three weeks! So however much ridicule it got, it was a really big record.

When I put out “Party All the Time,” people knew me for being funny, and there were a lot of actors, like Don Johnson and Bruce Willis, also putting out records. So some people took a shot.

But I’ve had people come up to me and say they love “Party All the Time” and they don’t apologize for it!

Q: What about the later music you put out?
A: A lot of critics also s–t all over “Whatzupwitu,” which I recorded [in 1993] with Michael Jackson. But 20 years later, Michael Jackson is gone, and not a lot of people have footage of them dancing around in the clouds with him [as in the video for “Whatzupwitu”]. That’s part of my history, now.

Q: How did you get him to be on that song?
A: I asked, and he did it! I knew Michael since he was 19. The whole Jackson family was really warm to me. I was just hanging out with Jermaine a couple of months ago.
Michael wasn’t “W J” when he was with me. He was a real person with his family and kids, but he could turn on the persona of Michael Jackson instantly.

I remember being three feet away from him on the video for “Remember the Time” [which starred Murphy]. When someone yelled “action” and he started dancing and doing all that s–t, it was like he plugged into a wall.

Q: Are you aware that your fictitious band from “Coming to America,” Sexual Chocolate, has an almost Spinal Tap-like cult status in the music world?
A: [Laughs] I’ve noticed that. If you’re in a band, you’ve probably been in a s–tty band like Sexual Chocolate. I hear little catchphrases all the time. If someone’s big and muscular, they’ll say “Hercules! Hercules!” [a quote from Murphy’s “Nutty Professor”], and I also hear that melody — “I got some ice cream, la la la la la” — from “Delirious” [Murphy’s 1983 stand-up movie].

There are a few phrases from my movies that seem to have become part of the lexicon.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
